Does anyone here avoid killing bugs?

I will kill any roach I find. I have an irrational fear of them instilled in me from childhood. Other than roaches I try to catch and release them unless they can hurt me like a wasp.

Hmmm. if it's like a cricket, I try to catch and release outside.

But pests like roaches, flies, ants and mites....you gotta kill them.

Sadly, I would have to resort to extermination. I'd feel bad knowing they are dying, but they would be causing so much of a problem and that there is no other option left that they would have to perish.

I appreciate the honesty. While I'm not concerned with avoiding animals when it comes to my diet, I also don't go out of my way to kill them just for invading my space or whatever. Unless it's infestation levels then sorry bros but I gotta draw the line at you trying to take over my home.

Heartless bastards! ;(

I stopped when I was 9 or something. Whenever I accidently step on a bug I get the urge to puke. Just can't do it. I know they probably would destroy me without blinking a bug's eye if they were taller than me but I simply know better and let them live.

Their impulse when entering my home is probably something like "oh, jackpot! a nice comfy place, maybe there's some food here?". I can't blame them!

Generally, yes.

However I did just claim victory against a goddamn snail invasion in my yard.

Their liquefied and chopped up corpses litter my yard

Recently I've found myself avoid killing bugs. Like, if I found a bug in my home I'd just take it outside. I've had a few people poke fun which is fine. I get it, it's weird lol, but I was wondering if anyone else does this?

I'm not saying I wont kill bugs no matter what. If a bug bit me or my home got infested with termites then those little dudes are gonna get it, but if a bug is minding its own business I'll just take it outside. if I found a fly kinda lost then I'd turn off all the lights, put my phone on full brightness and lead it outside. At the end of the day that 1 fly probs has 10 days to live tops.

The reason I started doing this is cuz I've been thinking about how we as people have a tendency to look down on creatures that we deem smaller or stupider than us. This new mentality of mine doesn't apply just to bugs. I have a lot of raccoons & cayotes where I live. Most people hate raccoons as far as I can tell, and attempt to set up traps. I on the other hand realized that maybe I should seal my garbage a bit better. Now they don't show up.

Am I just being dumb GAF?
You aren't being dumb. You're acting with kindness. I take them outside as well. Your effort with flies is kinda great.

NOOOOOOOO :( I love snails. This makes me sad, but i suppose if it's an invasion then it can't be helped. If it were me though, then I'd pick up each individual one and move them since I can actually spot them. (I've done this actually lol)

No, they all did except flies in which case I can't be bothered unless there's like a fruit fly investation or something, in which case I lay my traps of apple cider vinegar.

Spiders and I have an agreement. They can live here as long as I don't see them. Those fuckers are dead if I catch sight of them though and if there's too many I'm calling an exterminator. Flies and Ants are also Kill on Sight targets.

Other bugs get off easier. Sometimes there's these little black beetles that sneak in somehow and I do my best to escort them outside unharmed.

I'd love doing that, but I'm very easily grossed out and you risk some direct contact when you want to catch them. So I honestly smash them most of the time :( Which is gross by itself, but what can you do.

Nah
giphy.gif

We displaced/extincted the animals that keep them in check.

Disappointed this wasn't posted until the second page.

I don't know if it has been mentioned before but I stopped killing bugs when I saw Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. That film taught me to respect bugs (and nature) in a way that no politician, book or teacher ever did.

I tend to let small spiders in webs live, they catch other bugs and reduce the amount of murdering I have to do. If they get too high in number though I'll cleanse the area

Big beetles, slugs, butterflies, ladybirds etc - anything that doesn't appear scary or aggressive I'll normally give them a pass.

Wasps, big spiders and anything bitey (but not bees) - sorry but you gotta die.

Me and bugs have a quiet understanding. As long as you don't try to climb on me, I'll just put you outside. Any touchers that violate my personal space will face my wrath. I don't live in a country with scary bugs though, so it's easier for me to put them outside without worry.

Ticks, fleas and bed bugs (bed gets burned, only ever had those fucks once) get no mercy.
Only kill flies if they annoy me and swarms of ants if they get too close to the home.

Live in the UK so don't really need to worry about dangerous insects.

nope..
especially if it's wasp or something similarly aggressive..
bee, i might try to push away...
Green shield bug i try to avoid killing by crush as they smeel of pure death, but if i see one in my house, then the bugger is dead for sure shortly..

all in all my stance is.. you entered uninvited, so.........

I don't kill bugs. They don't bother me so I just leave them be. Never understood why people smash them.

I love snails as well (they look like tiny aliens) but in this case it was sadly necessary.

depends on the bug, if it's a beetle or a ladybug or something like that I'll just take it outside but a wasp or a spider and I just give it a quick death.

Always. Not like they did anything wrong. They're just existing like we are. I make exception for cockroaches (*shudder*), but everything else gets taken out, ushered to some leaves, or left alone. I didn't used to be so kind to spiders, but my husband changed my mind.

I tend to do, but I'm a hypocrite about it (I kill small flies basically all the time without hesitation).

If they're larger bugs, spiders, bees, wasps, etc I try to catch them alive with the ole' glass+piece of paper method.

It's weird that you think it's weird. People shouldn't poke fun at you for saving an insect's life.. wtf is wrong with people.

I also take insects outside

Outside I try to avoid killing bugs, if I see one in my walking path I'll avoid crushing it. Once they enter my home it is on. They have left their environment and entered mine, so they will be destroyed.

Only spiders, mosquitos and flies. Oh and ants/bugs if they bite me or walk on me (shoot em away with my fingers).

I try to take them outside but with bugs like mosquitoes and cockroaches is impossible sometimes, i feel bad when i didn't manage to kill them fast and they end up suffering because half of their bodies are squashed.
Killing ants makes me sad because the little fella is just working, collecting leaves and other kind of stuff...unfortunately there's no other choice when you see them invading your house.

I used to not give a shit but as I've gotten more introspective and thought about death more in recent years I try not to kill any insects really unless they're being a huge inconvenience to me.

Found a HUGE spider in my shower last week. I was going away on holiday the next day so just left it to it. Came back and it was gone thankfully.

I tend to kill of the little ones and catch and release bigger things. Mostly because they sometimes leave a mess, or capturing is easier.

I try to avoid killing bugs. Like others, mosquitoes and annoying house flies are open game, though. I actually really enjoy watching insects do their thing. I'm especially fascinated with ants. Sometimes I try to feed them. Last week I found a dead moth and I put it outside next to an ant hill I observed a day earlier. I'll do the same with spiders if I know where one is living on my back patio.

I used to kill them pretty indiscriminately. When I was a kid I was an insect mass murderer. Whenever I got bored I'd go outside and overturn rocks to find bugs to kill. I feel kinda bad about those days.

It was around when I discovered Carl Sagan when I stopped killing stuff. Started appreciating life of all forms and sizes. We're all products of the same environment, we're all connected. Other species have been observed killing for fun, but what makes us human is our ability to put a stop to that sort of behavior.

Yeah we have a designated cup we use for capturing /putting over creepy crawlies. Then slide some paper/card in underneath and throw out.

Seems to be my designated job as I'm forever getting called to take a spider 'out'.

What if we as humans are the one infesting the bugs life and not the other way around 🤔

Btw I kill any bug except spiders or house centipedes now.

Depends upon the bug.

Beetles, moths, snails, small spiders, and other harmless shit like that? Outside you go.

Roaches, ants, larger spiders, creepy-ass silverfish and millipede things? You're fucked.

Depends on the bug.

I'll rarely kill a spider. If the wife doesn't notice I won't even take them out of the house.

Killed a few wasps that have wondered in through a window because fuck those things. always trying to kill me so yea.. they got it coming.
