Dragon's Dogma Online is an MMORPG based on the original Dragon's Dogma game for PS3 and Xbox 360. It is set in Lestania and is similar in size to the original DD world. Gameplay wise it is also very similar if not exactly the same. You only see other players in town, and the open world is instanced. In towns you can get friends to play and pawns!

How to play

WARNING: VPN/PROXY REQUIRED. IP BAN IS IN EFFECT. Go to that section first if you’re on PC. On PS4/PS3 continue to this section until game is downloaded off of PSN store.

You first need to create a Capcom Online Games (COG) account: https://www.capcom-onlinegames.jp/pc/regist you will need to sign in to this on each version. Make sure not to sign up using facebook or any other services!

Second, to download the PS3 or PS4 version you will first need to make a Japanese PSN account (Guide) and then go to the PSN store and search Dragon’s Dogma. You may find the trailers, but if you click the trailer page you can then click the game’s main page from there. You will need to be logged into this account to play, so make sure you’re on another profile.

If you wish to download on PC, then you WILL need to activate your VPN. Otherwise you will get access denied. A tutorial on VPN will be shown below. http://download.dd-on.jp/client/DDON_Installer.exe

Third once the game has been downloaded, you will need to sign in on your COG account (which will connect to your PSN account if you’re on PS3/PS4.) Most likely there will be a patch after that, thus far it takes a bit to download so you may want to plan to do something in the meantime. (Personally I had to leave my PS4 on all night.)

VPN/Proxy Server

On PC you will need a VPN (Virtual Private Network).
You can download that here: http://www.vpngate.net/en/or find your own one. (Personally couldn’t find other free ones that allowed connection to Japan)

Once downloaded click on VPN Gate Public VPN Relay Servers and find one in Japan. Use the recommended TCP Protocol. There you go! Now you can download the installer and play! Actually after you install the downloader and load up the Launcher, you don't need to keep being on the VPN. :) It's just an initial check.

On PS4 and PS3 you can merely go to your network settings and begin a custom set up or either Wi-Fi or Hard wired, when you reach the section called Proxy Server, add one of these:
http://www.proxynova.com/proxy-server-list/country-jp/
http://www.gatherproxy.com/proxylist/country/?c=Japan

Note: I had to use another after my initial.
Once you do that, you should be good to go!

English Translation

As is obvious, this game is entirely in Japanese. Now you’re on PC you can go to https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonsdog...ation_pack_test_4_for_patch_version_01000003/ for a translation pack that is currently in progress! Note as the link says, it may not work for the latest patch. The great majority is still not translated, so you will still have to figure things out.

You can also use: http://julien-schu.tumblr.com/ddon.html and http://ddonline.tumblr.com/ for translations. This will be very useful for things not translated in the patch above and for those on PS3 and PS4.

FAQ

  1. Is there a subscription?
No, there is not. This game is free to play. However you do get stuff for owning the physical version.
  2. Can PS3/4 and PC players play together.
Yes! Very much in the way of FFXIV.
  3. Is this game connected to the original Dragon’s Dogma?
According to the wiki, not in terms of story. This game is set in Lestria.
  4. Is there Microtransations.
    Yes there is.
  5. How many can play together?
You can either go solo or up to eight players. You can still have pawns too! Many can be in the towns, however.

First OT, be easy on me. :)

Nice OT, so gonna jump in when I can.

Dragons Dogma is among my favorites of all time, so I really hope this is a worthy sequel.

I also don't mind it being F2p. There are plenty of really well done F2p games.

Fly in to freeeeee! 🎶

I'm pretty desperate to play some Dragons Dogma, but i don't know if this would be worth the hassle. I'll wait for some GAF impressions first.

Good job on getting up an informative OT fast!

Btw there is no physical version of this game for any of the LE versions.

The LE came with the early access code, extra content codes, soundtrack and artbook.

I'm pretty desperate to play some Dragons Dogma, but i don't know if this would be worth the hassle. I'll wait for some GAF impressions first.

Its pretty much Dragons Dogma for the most part with a few changes, but its quite the complete package.

Its why it is such a damned shame that this is some F2P abomination which will eventually be shut down once it stops being profitable for Capcom. At that point they might as well prep an offline version with co-op. As everything else pretty much exists.

Already spent a good amount of time in the game. Got a Shield Sage up to 16? and am working on the Hunter class that is 12.

Crafting is done with your pawn and real world time. So basically you need to sit there and baby things if you want to keep up a continuous output of items. But it saves you slightly some cash when it comes to making your own stuff vs buying it from vendors. Also you most def will be downing potions a lot so it helps being able to make your own that saves you about 50 G per potion as its 100 to create + resources.

Getting a pawn and being able to craft does not open up till you progress more in the game itself.

Your HP bar will slowly be chipped away the more damage you & your allies take and the only way it seems to recover that is by heading back to town and paying to rest at the Inn. Inn prices vary depending on location. Ones outside of the main city are insanely expensive in comparison to the main towns 50G price. Also when you have "rented" pawns each time you enter such zones like Inns it will subtract a number from the amount of times they can adventure with you. So going in and out constantly is generally not a good idea or you just wind up wasting resources for that rental. If you do rent pawns plan on staying out for a long period of time. You can rent up to 3 (if you are not using your own pawn) or 2 + your own pawn. So max 4 in a party. Dont bother renting a Shield Sage as the AI is too stupid to use it correctly and not take damage, so you will be wasting a ton of potions to baby them.

Overall as cool as this is, am really let down that capcom just did not make a proper retail game as all the resources are there. Dont think they would be doing any sort of co-op game in the future either as it would eat into the userbase of this title. Its similar to how they are with MH vs. MHF on the consoles.

Since I somehow forgot that I actually purchased the LE version (which is not worth the price) was playing it for about 2 days before it went live for the rest of Japan. Apparently there was a delay with orders going out for some folks looking at posts on the net.

*Disclaimer
Am not interested in linking up with others so dont bother asking what my PSN is.

Already knew that, but it still doesnt matter if you take large amounts of damage which is what happens against bosses on occasion. To make the healing work against bosses you would need to basically have the caster do the healing circle, have everyone else heal first then have the shield sage heal last due to them pulling the monster with them. Otherwise you are just dragging the boss into your group.

Against things like the cyclops for example you would be more busy healing those who are trying to "drag it down" by clinging onto it and hitting triangle. As they will be taking generally more damage from random hits with it thrashing around than the Shield Sage. The Shield Sage usually will only take damage from the grab attack which cant be blocked or if they are not paying attention to facing / stamina. Not too big of a fan of the enraged = enemy stamina bar that needs to be depleted to down them. As even with a party of humans you are taking unnecessary damage trying to drag that stamina bar down. You can chip away at it with normal attacks but its a very small amount. The upside to letting yourself get grabbed though is can have the healer create a healing circle near where you will land after getting released also your allies are pulling at the boss to drain its stamina. Depending on the areas where you are fighting too its possible to cheese bosses also by getting them stuck on areas with height differences.

Have not bothered with the other boss types out there as tested it out a few times and take way too much damage from normal attacks making it too much of a risk. Fairly decently equipped also, so its more a level issue than anything granted we are about the same lv as the thing but as with any MMO never take a bosses level at face value. The sphinx for example does some insane damage with its normal attacks, so have been trying to avoid contact with those. They will start appearing once you raise the level for an area by doing quests and whatnots raising your fame then talking to the area master that is usually in the inn. That is also how you get new dungeons to unlock also by reaching the various tiers for the specific area. All that info can be found out from the area master.

I stay out for hours at a time so work the HP bars pretty low before returning. Most of the time against normal enemies its not too much of an issue with a balanced party of pawns.

One thing though is you most def will need a party to fight the "bosses" large enemy types. While some can and have been done solo from vids online it will take a good amount of time or have a good set of equipment and levels. This game as mentioned in the quotes above you can hire up to 2-3 pawns depending if you are using your own or not. So its a nice option for when folks are unable to party up with other players. Had tried to go higher than 3 pawns total and the game does not let you select another.

Should have been International right from the start. They are basically wasting huge money right now.

Only competition they had this year was Witcher 3 (Fantasy RPG).

So we can download for free on PSN with a proper Japanese psn account? Awesome!

Just wanted to point out that the Google translate app on smartphones is pretty decent for basic translation. You just take a pic and highlight the characters, it'll translate what it can read if the font isn't too fancy. I used it for DQ heroes and it wasn't bad.

Do any of the videos in the op show off climbing giant creatures? The controls and camera while climbing are terrible, and the only things I hate about DD. SotC does it so much better.

Thanks for making the thread.
One important note about the VPN is that you only need it for loading into the launcher, and you can disable it after that. That includes for patching and stuff.

Dragon's Dogma was in my top 5 games last gen so i'm seriously considering going through all this hassle (making a JP account and all) in order to try this but i believe that we have decent chances for this to come in the west.

I don't think the Japanese version will be profitable enough to make Capcom ignore the western markets. The original game was designed with an international market in mind so i think this will also come in the west at some point.

Damn, seeing this reminds me that we still do not have Deep Down or Everquest Next on PS4 as of yet. When is NA going to get a f2P online RPG to play dammit...

I hope this comes to the west eventually though.

Thanks for the heads up.

Does anyone know if the pc version has native ds4 support?

Also, is anyone playing this on windows 10?

There is a decent program called Capture2Text that is very useful on PC for translating things enough to gain basic understanding.

Not really as all the costs with setting up / maintaining an online service such as this is not cheap. Capcom obviously does not want to be eating the costs on it in another market at this time.

Its the same reason why PSO2 isnt in the West. In Asia a different company partnered up with them which would be shouldering the costs of running the game / service itself.

Dont really expect Sony to do anything about this considering they sold off SOE this year.

Problem with F2P stuff is, its a gamble really as there is no initial buy in as with the older subscription based MMOs. Which players would first buy the package version (which usually contained 1 free month) then sign up for a subscription plan. So there was at least some sort of revenue generated that way. F2P is all about praying people buy the in game currency / services. So as you can imagine that does not make for a very appealing proposal for obtaining a large amount of funding from HQ to set up all of the backend stuff required along with continued funding for the staff necessary to run said service.

When I get the chance I shall edit!

Good stuff, you work fast lol.

Feel free to add all of those video links I had included with the other post also. As lots of good content there for folks to watch of actual non scripted gameplay.

Of course there would be costs. It's called an investment. :p If they are not willing to take some risks then what was the point of making this game in the first place?

Unless they expect that the Japanese market will be enough to make this game profitable enough and sustain its costs? But i seriously doubt this will happen.

I'll take that as a compliment. I changed it and it would have been done even sooner had my laptop not ran out of battery. D:

Yeah I know how that is doing work off of a laptop D:

Generally they just keep these things domestically as I mentioned, its due to them not wanting to invest in the various costs with setting things up themselves overseas. And this is not like a Square Enix who had their own service set up from the FF11 days, which allowed them to basically bring out anything else they wanted in terms of online games due to already having their backend up and manned by staff.

Its a simple business decision and not that hard to understand.

So by this logic Deep Down will not come in the west either? That would be disastrous for Capcom imo.I feel that both Dragon's Dogma as well as Deep Down are games that were designed first and foremost with a western market in mind and secondly for the domestic market.
I just don't think the Japanese revenue for these games will be enough for Capcom in order to ignore the west completely.

On Windows 10. DS4 works fine but, of course, no extra bells and whistle with the touchpad. (If there are any in the PS4 version) Recognized as a generic gamepad.

If a new English translation patch comes out will you be able to apply the new one without losing any of your progress?

Coolio. Thanks. wondering the same thing regarding the bolded.

If it makes anyone feel better, I dont even remember using the touchpad for anything on my PS4. While there might be some sort of feature attached, I do not recall having used it myself.

Oh wait it might be what activates the text chat window actually... Cant check at the moment.

How client side is the gameplay?

Is it playable with a VPN, or is there heavy lag?

Just expect random disconnects every now and then. Since it even happens to folks who are here in Japan. All without warning too lol.

So once you see the loading swirl appear and not go away for a while you know you are gonna get cut

Started last night with Fighter, and jump slashing enemies is very satisfying

Yeah, the combat FEELs great. Like there's a weight to everything. While similar to DD:Dark Arisen, but 60 fps and no black bars really help. 30 fps is fine, but I think Dark Arisen wasn't locked 30? Didn't feel it.

I can't wait to see impressions as more people play this. I was initially turned off by the online-only model, but we'll see how it shakes out, and if it comes to the US. That new hand-to-hand class looks crazy.

So what's the story with this game? Is it like Monster Hunter Frontier where Capcom passed on the assets from the original game to another, possible lesser team? Or is this the original team?

Considering how well made the title is, Id hardly say its a "lesser team". Same with Frontier as they have evolved in their own direction vs the main line series.

As it very much feels like Dragons Dogma just with some things changed due to it being a constant online world / MMO.

Game world is totally new also from what I have seen so far in wandering around the continent.

I tried to find a synopsis on the story, but couldn't find one. :( Only where the game takes place and how it's not related to the original in story.
