Evangelical coalition releases anti-LGBT "Nashville Statement" manifesto

Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood.

wow.

There's a lot to unpack, even just in the name. Without looking, I'm going to bet there are zero women on this "council."

I haven't been religious in years, but it cracks me up that the Gospels are literally a story about a rebellion against corruption and dogma running rampant in the Jewish community, yet it's been taken to create more corruption and dogmatic decrees.

It's ironic to note that many evangelicals wouldn't hesitate to take Jesus up on this challenge. They're so wrapped up in Leviticus that they've completely lost the plot of the gospel. They're all judgement and no introspection.

Thank you for posting this so I didn't have to.

I swear they think more about gay sex than gay folks. Ain't that kinda..gay?

I heard about a pastor who watched a lot of gay porn and "know what they're talking about" when he said it's sinful. They go into great detail about how the act goes, talking about taking drugs to numb the pain of penetration, fisting, and eating the poo poo.

I'm sure it's perfectly normal for confident, rational heterosexual people to watch hours of hardcore gay porn.

They play this clip on Howard Stern sometimes and it blows my mind. The preacher gives a detailed play by play of the porn from his pulpit to the congregation.

"And then he puts the hand DEEEPER!!!"

*horrified screams*

Boy one of the many reasons I will never go back to being christian

I'm not the best educated person on the planet but I respect other people

It's real hard to not judge christian churches by who they pal around

"Formed to defend against the accommodation of secular femenism"

So it's been a garbage organization at its very core from the start. A coalition literally formed together to assure women are treated as sub-human.

Of note, Nashville's government and businesses are strongly distancing themselves from this.

well yea. Nashville is the most liberal city in the South outside of Atlanta. It's had a liberal mayor for 40+ years, and has voted heavily democrat in each election for the past X amount of years. Even with the influx of new residents in the last 8-10 years, its still a progressive city.

The Nashville Statement is pretty hilarious in that way. If there was any place in the South where it would be widely panned, it's Nashville.

Ah yes, the extremely selective application of biblical ideals while entirely ignoring the ones you dislike.
Well, to be fair, all Christians of all denominations (except the extremely rare purist literalists) do exactly the same.

This isn't new. ”Biblical" morality has been used to justify slavery, resistance to interracial marriage, genocide, and war. The scope of the Bible's narrative allows a broad interpretation of what is right and moral, and both the church and society at large have moved toward universal justice and acceptance on issues once thought to be ”crystal clear."
Glad that they are progressive but this line just makes me shake my head. It's amazing that they have enough self-awareness to realize this (and it's true, of course), but not enough to realize that it makes the Bible 100% useless and even harmful. I mean they even say, themselves, that "society at large" is moving towards universal justice and progress. Go figure...

Not surprising that they'd be racist. Evangelicals and white supremacists have a long history:

Slavery in the United States was traditionally — and rather credibly, from a theological perspective — justified on scriptural grounds. The Ku Klux Klan is as much a religious Protestant sect as the Taliban or al-Qaeda are Muslim. The doctrine of the Christian Identity movement, with its spurious scholarship and militant apocalyptic urgency, forms the ideological backdrop of ”virtually all white supremacist and extreme anti-government movements" in the United States, the Anti-Defamation League writes.
Allowing Christian leaders to merely disown Protestant radicalization by fiat absolves them of having to confront the problem. It's one thing to disagree with the scriptural interpretation of a movement; it's another to deny that the movement had any foundations in scriptural interpretations at all. Facing the problem of Protestant racism from within means acknowledging its existence and dedicating a certain amount of energy to maintaining a nonracist church, not merely claiming that such elements exist only when politically convenient.

It's well past time we stopped allowing religious authorities to pretend that their doctrines have guided the rights revolution, when in reality, far too many of them traditionally stalled and crippled it. Without a moment's introspection, we find American Christian religious leaders claiming the glory of the 1960s civil rights movement while simultaneously fighting to prevent and undo any advances in rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans
.
More Christian than you, you fucking piece of garbage.
See above. When these people say that women must obey their husbands, they are accurately citing the Bible, like it or not.

Yah, I get where you are coming from, but I flat out disagree. Saying that it's either 100% literal or 100% useless and harmful is a very fundamentalist and reductionistic approach.

There are other valid hermeneutical approaches to take. Such as one where communities see the Bible as an ancient library of spiritual experiences that represent an arc of movement through cultures. The texts are not viewed as timeless, but as a moment in time that is representative of something that is true, but not not fully realized.

Evangelicals have a lot of goddamn nerve to lecture on morals/decency/etc after backing the pussy-grabbing, disabled-mocking, thrice-married shitheel currently in the White House.

They need to sit the fuck down.

It takes some stones for them to continue to preach from a position of moral authority on any issue after that. Not that I appreciated it before, but now it's beyond ridiculous.

Yes, I am familiar with mental gymnastics people will go through to keep the Bible around as something they think has value. I heard it all before, but my point stands. You don't need the Bible to have good values or progress through society. On the contrary, history shows it's the opposite; the more a society rejects Biblical values, the faster and better the progress happens (the Quiet Revolution is a good example of that).

I am in full agreement that you don't need the Bible for good values or societal progress. I just think you're being somewhat reductionistic. I disagree that people who read the Bible progressively have a negative effect on that progress. I'm not comfortable with demanding homogenous thinking culturally. I am perfectly fine welcoming and encouraging people of faith to join in helping make our world a more welcoming place for all.

Ah, I didn't say that though? I just said they should go the extra step and discard the Bible once and for all. :)

I would love to see their version of the bible out of morbid curiosity:

"And Jesus said unto Mary: Get back in the kitchen." would probably be a line from it.

This is disgusting. But, I think they're getting louder because they're losing. Every poll shows more LGBT acceptance and less religious orthodoxy from the US population.

The problem is, this kind of rhetoric, along with the way our president incites people, make this a dangerous time for any minority ... Ugh, it makes my blood boil that friends of mine have to face this crap on a daily basis.

I think you're right. More and more Christian denominations are becoming accepting. The trend is hopefully irreversible.
