Fallout 3 and New Vegas mod discussion

I'd been playing FNV for a long time with no problems but hadn't played it in a long time. I'd update to the latest ENB whenever a new one came out. I recently went back to play it but the ENB was rendering wrong. This is what it looked like.

14600936323_6996177d43_b.jpg

I can fix that problem if I enable useoriginalobectprocessing but then I don't get the intended look of the particular ENB preset. Older ENBs (.161 and earlier) seem to work fine but they're MUCH slower because they don't support ENBoost. I've tried it with a number of presets on the Nexus site and always make sure the presets I try support the latest .249 ENB.

Yesterday I did a clean install of FNV and now the .249 ENB won't load at all! The older versions still work but they make the game unplayably slow. Any ideas on what might be causing this?

UPDATE: Apparently the problem was related to fnv4gb. All I needed to do was copy the d3d9.dll file from the ENB into the main game directory as well as the folder called exes, that fnv4gb creates. Everything worked perfectly after that.

What are your guys thoughts on Nevada Skies? Essential? Or not? I've had this dilemma before about mods not sticking with the spirit of the game. I love the mod idea for it. But it doesn't exactly rain a lot out there in Nevada. Plus I've heard some not so good things about the stability for it still.

I want to give this game another chance but I don't know if I can deal with going through every single fucking cabinet and desk again like in Fallout 3.

I only found a few auto-loot mods on the Nexus that looked decent.

Does anyone use anything they'd endorse?

Ideally, I want to be able to just open a searchable thing and have it pull all the items I want with a certain value ratio or from a specified list of items.
no idea dude, i can understand it being annoying but i never liked autoloot stuff, specially since i always play with dem less carry weight mods

not essential, but very recommended

there's a "vanilla" edition that's just enhancing the regular look of the game, i would go with that if i were u

i just like sandstorms and snow and rain and all that a lot

I did too. I was just wondering what other people thought about it. I don't have it installed on this playthrough.

well i think sandstorms and such are very cool additions so i install it every time

fellout is also ok if you don't want all those extras, tho i think it doesn't work with the dlcs

So I used to use BOSS, but now the thing to use is LOOT so I'm told. But it keeps trying to put Gopher's UI mods ahead of the FalloutNV.esm. Ahud, ihud, ohud, doesn't seem to matter which one I use, they all pop up before Fallouts esm.

I don't know what I'm doing here if I'm honest and could use a few pointers.

I just tried LOOT myself after watching Gopher's video and I must say I prefer the load order that BOSS suggested over LOOT. The LOOT order mixed things up all over the place and mods that suggest being loaded low, like Interior Lighting Overhaul, were loaded high. So I went back to using BOSS.

Fallout 3 is un-moddable for me. Any mod, even only one causes the red visuals (see through) and game freezes on the part before you choose appearance =(

Made a short video, just of the starting area around Goodsprings, of how the game looks while running following apps/mods:

1)FOMM
2)NVSE
3)4GBNV
4)Stutter Remover
5)ENB + Enhanced Shaders
6)MTUI
7)Nevada Skies
8)EVE FNV
9)jesawyer
10)NMC
11)Weapons Redesigned
12)Enhanced Camera

Youtube compression kinda destroys the quality, but nevada skies, enhanced camera and NMC should be well visible. I really like how the game looks now. The headbob that enhanced camera adds, not to mention the visible body and shadow, makes particularly pleasant difference. I always hated the lack of headbob in gamebryo games. God damn Bethesda.

Started a new playthrough of Fallout 3 recenty, decided to go as a Starcraft Nova stealthy character. Such a fantastic skin, by far my favorite. Character goes into stealth mode like the Chinese Stealth armor when crouched. Includes a few guns (dont look that good tbh) and a 1H and 2H melee weapon, which look fantastic.

No graphic mods installed, kept crashing and I dont care enough to fix it.

I've really wanted to play Fallout 3 again, but man is it finicky on Win 7. Heck with mods, even getting the game to run appropriately with an i7 is a pain enough. I see all of the great pictures people have done to the game, and I would love to play through again. It easily had some of the best vault experiences for me.

Usually I end up just going back to New Vegas. Easier to mod, runs better, looks better, etc. Kind of surprised Beth didn't reach out and patch Fallout 3 to help newer systems.

Why the long case?
Any good way of pin pointing what is causing crashing at random points? Fallout 3 is heavily modded texture wise. It crashes more often when I am around many enemies, or animations.

Do you mean you have a big list of enabled mods and want to know the one that causes it?

In that case, the best thing to do is a binary search:
- disable one half of your list of mods and run the game. If no crashes occur, you know that one half if fine and you only have to mess with the other half.
- in the set of mods where the conflicting mod resides in, take again a half and disable it, and play the game.
- keep splitting in 2 till you find the mod.

EDIT: And for further investigation after you found the mod, I can't really help...
I've even never gotten Fallout 3 to work on my Windows 7 machine... Fallout New Vegas luckily works fluently.

Well the problem is that my crashes happen at random intervals, sometimes as long as 40 minutes. The only lead I have on this is that it has happened at a higher frequency with a more populated area. I suspect NMC maximum.

I just checked NMC's page since I remember there are options.
Which of the 4 packages do you use for NMC: Lite, Performance, Large or Maximum Pack?

NMC also made texture packs for Fallout NV, but there were only 3 options. I personally used the middle one since I didn't want to hog my system too much while still noticing a decent increase in quality.
Perhaps lowering to another package could be worth a try?

Yeah, I am using maximum. I have a pretty nice computer, but I might consider going down a bit.

Bit late with this but are you using the 4BG/Large-Address-Aware .exe? Even if your system is up to it the game will need some modifications to smoothly handle that much stuff.

I just can't seem to be able to install any ENB-mod. I'm trying to install this one but the game just crashes.

I just deleted the whole game so I could reinstall it from scratch, but with my connection it's going to take a while. :(

Finished my playthrough with the mods I listed above.
Gotta say, pretty damn great. 100 hours, around 5 crashes all in all, just a few small bugs resolvable by reload or using console. Jsawyer is great, I reached level cap only few hours before the end of the game, it is perfectly balanced. DLCs are for the most part fantastic.

Okay, I give up. Does anyone have a good step by step instruction on how you install all the neccessary tools in the OP, ENB and this shader.

I've tried it several times and has figured out it's the process of installing the ENB that fucks it up. When I try to start the game with that config applied to the game, it crashes instantly.

So I've finally began my New Vegas modding journey. Thankfully I learned a lot from my Skyrim experience, so I'm picking stuff up much faster. The main programs I'm going to be using are FOMM, Wrye Flash, LOOT, and FNVEdit. I've used LOOT and Wrye Bash for Skyrim (so I'm already familiar with bashed patches), but I never used TESVEdit so cleaning mods and making merged patches will be a new experience for me. Hopefully FNVEdit is very similar to TESVEdit so I can transfer that knowledge back to Skyrim when I start my next modded playthrough.

First things first, I downloaded and "installed" NVSE. That was simple enough; it's basically the exact same thing as SKSE.

Next I installed FOMM - Fork, which appears to be the most up-to-date version of FOMM (updated July 21). I watched some tutorials last night and installed my first fomod this morning (NVAC).

Then I installed Wrye Flash and all the python prerequisites. Haven't used it yet because I only have 1 mod installed, but I'm guessing making a bashed patch is done in the same way as Wrye Bash.

Finally I installed FNVEdit and downloaded a PDF manual on how to use it. This will be the most involved part of my experience since I am unfamiliar with cleaning and merging mods. Anyway I only had time to install it and read the first few pages of the manual before having to leave for work.

As far as my actual mod list goes, here's what I have downloaded:

Stability/Bugfixes
New Vegas Stutter Remover (NVSR)
Yukichigai Unofficial Patch (YUP)
New Vegas Anti Crash (NVAC)
4GB Fallout New Vegas Updated (4GBFNV)

UI
MTUI
One HUD (oHUD)
The Mod Configuration Menu (MCM)
+ MCM Bugfix patch

Visual Enhancements/Fixes
Essential Visual Enhancements (EVE)
+ Camp Searchlight HotFix patch
Electro City
+ Electro City compatability patch
Wasteland Flora Overhaul [Dead version]
Glowing Star Bottle Cap
Centered 3rd Person Camera

NPCs
Willow
+ Project Nevada patch
Populated Casinos

Gameplay Enhancements/Fixes
Project Nevada [Core & Equipment modules only]
+ WMX Support patch
+ EVE Support patch
Weapon Mods Expanded (WMX)
+ EVE WMX patch
GARU - Infinite ammo for your companions
The Weapon Mod Menu
Invisible Wall Remover (IWR)
New Vegas Restoration (NVR)
+ NVR Electro City patch
New Vegas Freeside Restoration (NVFR)
More Perks

I'm still searching for any more mods I might want to add, but this seems like a pretty good start. I read most of the mods' descriptions on Nexus and I don't think any of them conflict with each other, but as I install them with FOMM one by one I'm gonna make sure I read their readme files just in case.

some thoughts:

- i thought willow was crap. i mean you get a waifu if you're into that sort of stuff but she's like a dumb blonde american waifu which is pretty much the worst kind of waifu so, you know, just uninstall her out of your life
- if more perks is what i think it is, it probably means a perk every level or every two level basically turning new vegas into fo3. you can say whatever you want about the beauty of fo3's exploration or whatever but it's leveling system was mindless garbage. so if you're not looking for garbage i'd say skip this one too
- get the new vegas uncut series if you want a bunch of cut content restored. it's pretty cool!
- get new vegas redesigned 2. there's a new version called new vegas redesigned 3 that has a lot of new shit but i can't vouch for that one as i haven't tried it yet (tho i would strongly suggest you do). new vegas redesigned 2, tho, is absolutely fantastic and a must-have
- get nevada skies, it adds things like sandstorms and rain and all sorts of fun crap. it's also not enb so it won't make everything look oversatured and mega blurry or something. i use the vanilla version since it's the most tame one and it's the one i'd recommend
- get the mod that nerfs boone so you can take boone and he doesn't get to have all the fun while you sit back and watch him murder everybody
- i really like the "npc project" mod series which adds some content back to pretty unfinished-looking areas in the game. it'll make the 188 and some other places look a lot more livelier for sure
- another visual mod that i really liked is the weapon retexture project. makes all guns look pretty and hi res. unlike most texture mods this one keeps the original feeling and look really well

Thanks for the heads up about Willow. That's the highest rated companion mod on Nexus so I figured it was the best. Can you recommend a few good companions?

The More Perks mod does not change the leveling or perk point system, it just adds some more perks. It was highly recommended.

I'm iffy on Nevada Skies. It's one of the highest rated FNV mods but... I'm not sure if I really care about weather that much. But since everyone seems to love it so much I should probably check it out.

The New Vegas Uncut and NPC Project mods look really awesome, I'll definitely be downloading those.

New Vegas Redesigned 2 looks cool, but risky. It says in the description that it conflicts with a lot of mods, so I'm not sure if I want to deal with that. I think I remember passing on the Weapon Retexture Project mod because it conflicted with some of the mods I was going to use, but maybe I'm mistaken. I see WMX has a compatibility patch for it.

I found this mod called Weaker Boone, I'm guessing that's what you're referring to? It doesn't seem very popular, but having my companion kill everything doesn't sound very fun so I'll download it.

no idea, i don't really care for that kind of mods tbh

willow isn't poorly made or anything and you can tell she had a lot of work or whatever but i have enough tsundere with cass, enough felicia day with veronica and enough yandere with lily

ah ok, i don't really like this sort of stuff as i don't like changing much balance-wise but u know it's your game

nah, it's pretty cool. helps make the game look less drab and sandstorms are really really cool.

totally worth it, really helps immersion and atmosphere and all those fun words

never had any trouble with any of those two, really.

i highly recommend you somehow fit new vegas redesigned somewhere since it does really help characters look less bethesda-y.

that's the one. go for it

oh and i also remembered there are two mods i don't know the names but one lets you pilot a vertibird which sounds fucking awesome and another one adds destructible objects to the game which again is pretty sick. i don't think any of those two work really well but they might be fun to run once and uninstall

Thanks for the tips zkylon.

I recently found out that there is a S.T.E.P. guide for New Vegas!
http://wiki.step-project.com/User:EssArrBee/FalloutNewVegas

I like how they use Mod Organizer because I use it for Skyrim so it's the mod manager I'm most familiar with. One stupid thing I'm confused on though, is the instructions for doing the nvse memory patch:

Extract the files from the archive into the Fallout New Vegas folder, NOT into the Data folder. The src folder and text files are not needed.
Open up the Data/NVSE folder and "right click->New->Text Document", then name the file "nvse_config.ini".
Open nvse_config.ini and add the following:
[Memory]
DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB=400
Save and close.

I don't have a NVSE folder in my Data folder, am I supposed to? I just made a new folder in the Data folder and titled it NVSE, and then added the nvse_config.ini in there. I hope that works...

Alright I opened New Vegas with NVSE and it worked, so that's good.

I have a question for those of you who have (and mod) several Bethesda games.

The author of that New Vegas STEP guide was kind enough to mention that if you use Mod Organizer for another game (Skyrim in my case), you need to use multiple installs if you use it for other games — i.e., For Skyrim, I installed MO into my Steam Skyrim folder; for New Vegas, a separate MO will be installed in my Steam New Vegas folder. Simple enough.

But what about LOOT? I have LOOT installed in my Skyrim folder. For my New Vegas Mod Organizer, I have to add the executables like WryeFlash, FNVEdit, and LOOT. Since LOOT is installed in my Skyrim folder, will it cause problems if I try to use it for New Vegas from there? I don't know how LOOT works, so I don't know if I'm supposed to do a separate install for New Vegas like I did for Mod Organizer.

*EDIT: I figured it out. When you open LOOT, just click on the "Game" tab and you can switch between Skyrim and Fallout.

I'm most familiar with Mod Organizer, and I just really like it. I have nothing against NMM but I find MO to be superior in every way. I love how it leaves your actual data files untouched.

Anyway, I used the built-in LOOT button with MO and it seems to be working fine. I'll report more as I get further. I'm making pretty slow progress because I've been playing a lot of Smite.

*Edit: I figured out the LOOT issue. I added an edit to my post above. It's really simple.

Hey people, I'm pretty much set when it comes to Quest, HUD, Gameplay and Character Overhaul mods. The only thing that I have to figure out which gives me a bit of headache is weapon and weapon modification mods. I already downloaded EVE (and I love it, big fan of all the effects and the new look of the energy weapons) and the Weapon Animation Replacer which gives you options for a couple of different fighting stances. Now all I need to know is which mods are best compatible without tons of patches and what not. I haven't played Fallout in a whole while so I probably missed a lot of updates, I remember that EVE was once not really compatible from the get-go with a lot of other Weapon mods, so I thought I'd ask before I make some fatal mistake. :p

Also, my favourite mod at the moment is probably the Cartoon Failure Death Sound (well, besides JIP Companions Command and Control, Realistic Weapon Damages and Russell).

The New Vegas S.T.E.P. guide has a weapon mods section:

http://wiki.step-project.com/User:EssArrBee/FalloutNewVegas#Do_You_Feel_Lucky.3F

It includes several compatible weapon mods and also patches to make other mods work together with them (like Project Nevada). The installation instructions may not completely apply to you since the guide is designed for Mod Organizer, but it sounds like you have some experience modding so I'm sure it won't be a problem.

*Edit: Also something to note is that the guide also assumes you have all the DLC. This isn't a big issue since it's mostly obvious which mods require DLC, but in the case of the Weapon Retexture Project the guide tells you to install the ChristineCOSRifle optional file. I installed it and got an error because apparently that file is tied to the DLC.

Thank you for the link!

Is Weapons of Millenia the best mod to go along EVE, WRP and PN?

Really funny Companion mod I found yesterday that is based on Alchestbreach's business radroaches (ACB is a Youtuber who makes hilarious First Impression videos on mods).

This is me posting from the afterlife to tell you Zkylon takes more of your soul the more you post in this topic. Get out while you still can.

Or I just stopped keeping up with the mod scene. Death has made me forget these things.

Alright, for better or for worse I'm ready to begin playing!

I didn't follow the STEP guide to the letter; I probably only installed like 40% of the mods from the guide. I left out most of the overhauls, added content, and visual/sound enhancement mods because I kinda want to experience the "vanilla" game first. I also didn't do the texture optimization with DDSopt because it seemed like too much of a hassle. I'll do it if I have low FPS, but I doubt I will since I went easy on the texture/visual mods.

I installed some other mods not in the guide, like Weaker Boone by zkylon's suggestion. I plan on doing the same thing I did with Skyrim: my first playthrough I mainly focus on essential and bugfix/gameplay improvement mods, and a handful of mods that seem too cool to leave out. In subsequent playthoughs I'll add more visual/content/overhaul mods — I will already be familiar with the vanilla game at this point so I won't have to worry that I'm missing out on the original experience by adding a ton of mods that drastically change the look and feel of the game.

My final mod list:
