Only one western game in the entire top 100?

There's no defense for that. Zero.

I really don't see how anyone can deny the notion that Japan is xenophobic as all get-out when it comes to games. It's almost criminal.

So the Japaneese have different tastes to the West, which makes them Xenophobic?

What next the Japanese are racist against home consoles?

Maybe the Japanese just don't like shooters.

Multiplatform seems to be the way to go on the HD consoles.

Or just publish on the wii with lower development costs, especially with the niche RPGs. ToS2 did nice for a low budget spinoff, and excluding any money hatting, made significantly more profit than any of the HD rpgs. With Arc Rise Fantasia, DQX, FF: Crystal Bearers, Tales of Ten, it is looking very good for the wii. And, like the DS, with DQ comes the rest of the RPGs.

OK, got it added into Garaph. When weeding out the end-of-year data already in there due to the final Top 30 of the year, I ran into a slight discrepancy: Taiko no Tatsujin Wii. YSO says 252,183. cvxfreak's post says 251,083. However, the Famitsu weekly data we already had says 251,183, and it jives with the individual weekly numbers, so I'm sticking with that.

This isn't what I originally intended it for, but using the "arbitrary Top X" creator I made a few weeks back, and putting in the week before the last week of the year and the proper last week of the year, we can get a pretty good idea of how much most of these games advanced as far as my database was concerned, since for the week before the last week of the year it will search for the most recent piece of data. This will also include a few things that were in both weekly Top 30s without making it into the yearly Top 100
http://garaph.info/labs/arbitrarytop.php?week1=2008-12-22&week2=2008-12-22

Looks like the biggest silent seller was Pokémon Ranger Battonage/Shadows of Almia, which we last saw in the mid-year Top 100 but has since gained 86,872.

One 360 game in the top 100. Japanese developers have you realized Japan doesn't give a fuck about the 360 and you should probably stop making exclusive or timed exclusive RPGs for it?

Maybe because Japan isn't the only market for RPGs?

These will join the 5 million club soon, as the first non-Pokemon, non-Mario games ever to manage that on any platform in Japan. (Along with Tetris for GB they're already the only non-Pokemon, non-Mario games in the 4 million club.)

Nintendogs has only sold 1.8 million LTD? I thought it would be higher. Or is this only for one sku, with the other dog skus counted seperately?

All SKUs; the biggest market for Nintendogs is Europe, followed by the USA; contrary to anyone's expectation before it was released.

Seems so! Pipe as separator ... and it imports. Way awesome, thanks!

Not to complain or anything, but position 94 is missing separators, and the LTDs should probably be split off into their own column.

Wow. Must have been huge in Europe. Aren't WW LTD sales over 18 million or something? That means Europe would have to be close to 10 million! Right?

The exact same figure for both, really? Is this possibly a mistake?

I'm thinking next year, at the earliest.

Using PSP as an indication (dead system magically selling well for no reason),

Full year of PSP-2000 + ~ 3 months of PSP-3000 vs. ~4 months of PSP-2000
MHP2G in 2008 ~= MHP2 in 2007 + 1 million

I wouldn't call it "no reason." :p

Edit:
I also wouldn't call the PSP after 2007 "dead." :p

Looks like it's a mistake. YSO has for those two, respectively

223,328 / 223,328
213,551 / 1,472,029

EDIT: I note this changes something I said earlier. Actually, a double mistake. I said Pokémon Ranger when I meant Mystery Dungeon. And now that's not the biggest sleeper from the middle of the year anyway, but SSBB, which gained 80,790 under the radar since the middle of the year.

Seeing WKC numbers, I don't know why Sony isn't developing more RPGs.
Well, it looks like it was a fairly heavy investment. Wasn't it originally due near launch? And I doubt Level 5's as much of a cheap contract as they were in the Dark Cloud days. :/

I agree, Sony should be funding more RPGs, but I'm not sure if more RPGs on level with WKC is really appropriate. Maybe something like cheaper SRPGs and ARPGs to compliment projects like WKC though (ie: stuff like Popolocrois IV, Arc the Lad VI, Alundra 3, etc).

Yeah, I guess early 2010 is probably more realistic. Or later even really... I guess it depends on when we get DQVI DS, we'll probably see DQVII Wii a year or so later.

One of them is DEMON'S SOUL, the other one is probably WKC2. So that leaves 3 left.

Well if I understand correctly he said Sony is internally developing 5 titles, wasn't DS and WKC developed by third parties?

No I don't think so - he said "inside Sony". And technically both of those titles are funded by Sony.

Hmm...I don't know, because afterwards he mentioned 3rd party development as well, which seems to me he's trying to separate the 5 titles from 3rd party association.

Anyway, we'll probably see 1 or more announcements this year...

No, that means he wants to work closer with 3rd parties after alienating them badly - cough, Namco. Because if all that means is more 3rd party RPGs funded by Sony, then it's better if the PS3 just ceases to exist, since Sony obviously doesn't have a clue.

Oh, and it's clearly statedin the DEMON'S SOULS trailer that it's a JapanStudio game. Which means it's one of the five.

The ones MS paid the dev costs for obviously will end up as 360 exclusives. The other ones just follow the chain of results and circumstances, without the use of direct moneyhats. That is what he's saying.
