Amazing. Absolutely breathtaking. This is some Beyond3D levels of ignorance here. Sony has went out of their way to please developers who were celebrating a faux-Christmas on February 20th. However, it isn't enough. Sony has to now please the armchair programmers on GAF because they know whats better for games than the creators themselves.
Let this list be a reminder.
Wait, where were you in all those disgusting Xbox One threads these last couple of months that were way worse than this thread? We need more people like you to come into all perceived negative tech threads not just Sony ones and let people know how ignorant they are.
I have said this many times over, but people fail to even appreciate this small iota-
1. Developers are very happy with the speed and quantity of RAM available.
2. The OS will eventually shrink.
3. MOAR RAM =/= better looking games.
4. Not a single person famourmortimer, Verrendus, BruceLeeRoy (I hope he doesn't mind me mentioning him), or I have contacted has mentioned anything remotely indicating disappointment.
5. This was the plan all along, and there is a visible and transparent safety reserve of RAM available so Sony doesn't get caught in a state of perpetual loss.
6. You can choose to believe this last part or not, but developer's will get access to more RAM as the years go by into the machine's life cycle.
I wuv u.
And that's some overraction too, isn't it? All I'm saying is that 3GB for non-gaming functions sounds like too much in a gaming machine. Oh, I can't have opinions?

If I may be sarcastic, the less memory, the less fun. When I went from my 8GB PC to 16GB, it made games like Bad Rats amazing.
Some Ram is reserved for debugging purposes. Its the reason that the 360 devkit uses 1GB. I seriously doubt that the final devkit will have the exact same amount of ram as the retail console would.I just don't get it.Playstation 4 has 8 GB ram and almost half of it is reserved for OS functions. How much would be available to devs if it was released with 4 GB?
The reserved ram isn't just for the OS it is for multitasking....
ps4 os may only use 200MB but that doesn't mean you only need to set 200MB aside, you need to be able to download shit in the background, have music playing, have a browser with a bunch of tabs open, record gameplay (gona need some ram as buffer before you write it to the HDD)etc
3.5GB is still an unholy shitload to do that though, but it regardless, the 'bloated os' garbage makes no sense as that isn't what the reserved ram is for.
Mine was a question. Learn to read.
I don't wanna sound like a broken record but are we really talking about the whole next gen ? More ram might as well be made available when Sony sees what works and what not in terms of os apps.

That's not how it works with these guys.
So maybe Sony shouldn't have stated a million times that the PS4 is first and foremost a gaming machine implying Microsoft was too busy thinking about multimedia functions to care about the gamers.
But Sony did say that. Gamers believed.
But... it is understandable people are disappointed, I guess.
This again.. still no statement from Sony I guess. Whatever, ya know I'm not going to listen anymore.
You guys do realize the primary reason Digital Foundry still exists is because of their 'head to head' analysis or whatever they called it. If one system completely blows the other out of the water then they lose relevancy. I'm thinking that they are putting out click bait just for the sake of it. Have fun guys and gals but I'm out now.
Gonna sit back and wait for my PS4 preorder.. while other flip out and cancel theirs.
So maybe Sony shouldn't have stated a million times that the PS4 is first and foremost a gaming machine implying Microsoft was too busy thinking about multimedia functions to care about the gamers. But Sony did say that. Gamers believed. And now they are disappointed, because apparently Sony is doing exactly the same thing they was previously bashing.
Not that I really care, to be honest. I think we will be good enough with 4.5GB of RAM and most certainly this amount will increase with time. So no real reason for concern.
But... it is understandable people are disappointed, I guess.
It wasn't that long ago that people were speculating that both systems would have 2 gig of ram and maybe 4 gig but thats if we were damn lucky, we now have both systems with 5+ gig soley for games so lets keep it in perspective here.
5GB is also 10 times more than we had last gen and when i look at games like Halo 4, The Last Of Us and Uncharted 3, then we have nothing to worry about really, all games these days have good graphics and next gen will be even better.
Which all sounds reasonable but I think you can understand why some folks are somewhat disappointed because Sony definitely pitched the PS4 as a more pure games machine relative to the multimedia machine of Xbox One so there was an implied narrative which posited that most of the memory on PS4 would be available for game developers from day one.
Couldn´t the PS4 just have something like a "Game Mode"?
I mean, some games that could access to... let´s say... full 8GB of RAM, but without the OS loading. Like the old consoles, put the disc in the tray and load. No OS, no sparks, no anything.

You have got to be kidding me. Are you guys like dense or something? So this whole thing happened for Sony to copy.. Because it's not like they don't have other things they want to do.. Microsoft is going to be all gung-ho 'gamers' when they signed a million dollar deal with nfl to do non-gaming things.. I can't deal...

Eh. I haven't stated I've cancelled my PS4 preorder or any other hyperbolic statement. What I said rings true.Amazing. Absolutely breathtaking. This is some Beyond3D levels of ignorance here. Why are people crying?
176GB/s at 60FPS = 2.93GB
176GB/s at 30FPS = 5.86GB
What is that supposed to convey?
Can you explain more on this?
round 3 is off to a pretty good start.
so ps4 has less usable ram than xbone now....
i dont know what to say or believe now.
i wanted a lean mean gaming machine, and sony had been delivering it ..until they hit this ram wall out of the blue.
come the fuck on cerny...i dont need 3gb wasted so i can snap an internet browser or update my facebook apps while i play mgsV.
im disgusted.
People are mad at the "on paper" assessment, but this is something we'll easily get over. The games will shine just as much, regardless.

Doesnt help when you got developers saying stuff like 'Oh the 8gb caught us by surprise. So much powar what to do!?!?'Gamers 'assumed'. They saw what they wanted to see, even though Sony didn't say anything about allocation.
Sony hyped themselves as being the gamers' choice. They made a big deal about having 8GB of RAM. Now it's come out that they're guaranteeing developers less memory than their "all-in-one" competitor. Based on DF's article, they're earmarking 1-2GB of RAM to literally do nothing at the moment.
For me, this confirms that Sony's OS development is just as sloppy as last gen, perhaps even more so. Sony's made great strides in terms of efficient hardware design, but it seems like they've gone backwards when it comes to software. How exactly is this confidence inspiring? Especially when we've barely seen the OS at work? Info like this makes me doubt their ability to deliver on all the functionality they promised back in February.
Eh. Sounds like a lot of projections and leaps of logic on the part of fans to me.Which all sounds reasonable but I think you can understand why some folks are somewhat disappointed because Sony definitely pitched the PS4 as a more pure games machine relative to the multimedia machine of Xbox One so there was an implied narrative which posited that most of the memory on PS4 would be available for game developers from day one.

Isn't Richard Leadbetter a Sega Saturn fanboy?

No. That's not possible.
you're onto something here
combine that with the game mode on my tv and we've got something special brewing
200hz 4K gaming with full 8GB RAM utilisation - ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED
Game mode, in this case, would literally be no anything.

Gemüsepizza;73171436 said:It was a dumb question. There is nothing in this article that hints at 5.5GB for X1, and it is known for a long time that X1 has 5GB reserved. Furthermore the article clearly states that games on PS4 have access to 4.5GB and additional 0.5-1 GB RAM, which means 5-5.5GB so I don't know why you ignore this. Your "question" just seems like an deliberate attempt to make the PS4 look worse than the X1.
