FFXV copies out in the wild (street date broken in Peru, possibly elsewhere)

I think it's a given that localization from that era really was on a tier of its own.

Everything from FF7's "Marlene was cried herself silly" to FF9's still somewhat jerky lines, to Legend of Dragoon's "Tut, such a trifle wound" to RE's opening cinematic.

We've gone the complete opposite way now, where localization teams take a little too much liberty with translations, like Dragon Quest turning every town into a bunch of caricatures screaming things like "O FAITH AND BEGORRAH!".

SE still never even fixed the music for VIII on steam like they did VII. You have to use the Roses and Wine mod if you want the original music and not the midi files. :/

But it will be nice if SE finally admits to themselves that they need to hire good writers (and have a better localization team)

Yeah, it would be nice to have XII level of voice acting again.

Late on the random VIII love upthread, but here's where I believe it excels:

Its drive to experiment. Say what you will of the Junction System, but I find it just weird enough to work despite its jank. The age-old criticism that drawing spells is like watching water boil isn't really as relevant as many people believe it is; it is a far handier thing to explore other gameplay systems in search of 100 junctionable spells. Finding magic in the wild is fun. Getting your groove on with some Triple Triad, collecting magazines in order to learn how to upgrade your gunblade, surfing over the high seas with a giant floating fortress that looks straight out of an impressionist painting... it's all very stylized and very different.

I agree with your whole post, but especially on that. This is why i think that FF9 was just an easy cash-grab for Square. People can say what they want about FF8 but at least Square tried something else with that game.

Yeah of course, as I said above, without a doubt its gameplay is awesome. A fair few reviews said the story is too though, and while that is subjective, compared to other MGS games the story is just trash, not to mention incomplete.

Sure, but FF does have some good story peaks, and like it or not for Square many fans still enjoy the member berries of "member FF on the PS1?".

I thought MGSV had a better story then 4s atleast.

At the bare minimum, given how utterly awful 4s was, I'd take the lack of a story and something unfinished over whatever the hell happened in 4.

MGS4 stumbled a bit but Old Snake was still fun to play. 1 -> 3 is better than 4, but 4 is still better than 5 for me.

I don't get some of the FF9 hate. I loved FF9. Sure 7 and 8 were better, but 9 was still great.

It's the 10 love I don't get. It's a decent game, but 7~9 are better than 10. 12 had a good gameplay switch up, but story was average. 13 is just an abomination.

I'd be happy with 15 being like 12, great gameplay, serviceable story.

MGS4 was my first metal gear game lol. I honestly think that helped me enjoy the game, because whenever i didnt know what was going on i thought "oh im sure all this stuff is perfectly explained in previous titles and its just my fault that i havent played them".

I liked FFVII and FFVIII, but I absolutely adored IX (easily my favorite PS1 era FF). I really liked how it returned to its medieval inspired roots (castles, airships, knights), and away from the sci-fi futuristic worlds of FFVII/VIII. I just found that IX had so much "heart" to it. From the characters, to the setting, to the whimsy, and to the story (even though the shit hit the fan in the end), I just found a lot to love from the game.

Plus, I really think the love story between Zidane and Garnet was really well done. It didn't feel "forced" the way Squall-Rinoa was (at least to me). And that ending where Zidane comes back and Garnet just runs to him, while plowing through a sea of people is right up there for me in terms of greatest video game endings ever (I really liked FFX's ending too, so I really hated the fact that they ruined it by creating FFX-2).

To be fair, I haven't played the entire series. But I have played most of them. I've played III, IV (didn't finish it on DS), VI (playing this right now and loving it), VII, VIII, IX, X, XII, and XIII (skipped the sequels). I haven't liked an FF since X (didn't like XII that much though I'm really interested with the remaster as I wasn't able to finish the game) so I'm just hoping that XV is a good game. At this point, more than anything, I just want it to be good.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I made an FF countdown before (forgot for what it was... Probably FFXIII?). Starting off with X:

I think 9s and 10s just because it's Final Fantasy and 10 years in the making. Maybe I'm giving reviewers too little credit though.
I think you are "because it's final fantasy" is no longer a thing. Ff doesn't have that clout anymore. Reviewers don't seem to care about franchise name anymore and that's good

Fuck release dates, just sell the copies as soon as they get them in stock. I have a friend who i straveling in peru now, what store is selling these?

I absolutely love Final Fantasy VIII with all my heart even though the story is pretty stupid and the gameplay has its tedious aspects.

The thing is, even if XV's story ends up being stupid like VIII's, as long as it's entertaining (in a good way), well-presented, and has a lot of epic moments, I don't think I'll mind much.

But it will be nice if SE finally admits to themselves that they need to hire good writers (and have a better localization team)

The English localizations of Final Fantasy XIV, World of Final Fantasy, and farther back Nier are excellent. If the English localization for XV is poor, it's not because Square-Enix as a whole is unable or unwilling to hire good localizers.

I think I'll have magic equipped all the time just for the short warps, even though I find magic in this game unbelievably boring :C

Gotta have my Trickster Style.
