Dude, let me add you! What's your PSN? We ned to get more people here for clubs for PS3!
Still waiting on a PS3 Fifa thread in the community forums. Some Ps3 Gaffer really should do it.

Final conclusion (heh, for now at least):

- The new collision engine is cool, but it needs some work
- The new defense system is painful against the CPU, creates some dynamic gameplay when played in VS matches. I haven't been able to test it thoroughly against 11 vs 11 so I don't know if it makes it better. It's difficult to adjust to the logic that you can't really go 1 on 1 in defense. Also I think the button layout is overcomplicated
- Minor changes in logic, A.I., physics and balance make this version a much better one from last year.

That I dont have the time to coordinate and take care of the OP right now as I am busy with another thread for the next weeks. Otherwise I'd totally do it, which is why I am hoping someone else will do it in the meantime!

Sure man. That'd be cool. Including me I count around 6 then so far.

Neogaf is way too big a forum to only have a few FIFA PS3 players. I'm sure we'll be able to start something up.

So I played online earlier. I think this image tells the story. I was so depressed after the second goal - felt so helpless. I had two central defenders around his striker but they might as well have been none.

Don't see myself playing it again sadly, which is a shame because other than this issue, its taken positive steps forward in the animation and attacking AI.

Do you switch to your defenders?

I usually use 2nd defender contain to pressure the forward and position myself for to either take away a shot lane or pass lane.

Also, I always remember to switch offense to defense with the dpad.

This seems true. You can't expect to master the new mechanics after one game...

Ultimately the point of a video game isn't meant to be overcoming the control scheme, the challenge is to out play your opposition but ultimately it is to enjoy yourself. It's not just been one game, that would be silly. I've played countless games (in the demo) to recognise that tackling is in itself a skill now, depending on the angle, speed and timing you come out. The problem is its easier to turn with the ball, or shift it left to right, than it is to win the ball thus causing an imbalance of play.

You know how certain skill moves require the perfect timing and context? Well someone in EA decided to adopt this principle with defending. I don't mind adapting to something, but what I'm personally confused by is why they decided to change the defending, and make it require skill, rather than tweaking the offensive play. For example, this BS of holding down the LB and passing - causing the defender to come out and leave space in behind, is still being used in FIFA 12. Why not remove that AI exploit and force players to actually use moves that require more than two passes to get in behind a defence? It is devoid of logic.

I'm curious to read of your impressions of this over the coming week when you try out some competitive matches Online.

But let's acknowledge that we're now talking about learning how to tackle, no not some fancy skill move or how to take direct FK's, but something as basic as tackling requires dedicated practice. I don't mind having to adapt to a new play system, but the idea of learning to master such a basic element of the game is a fucking joke. Next, you'll have to take into consideration wind speed, air moisture and the pressure inside the ball before you do anything with it. I see it in other games as well (this isnt a FIFA rant of sorts), and its just ridiculous iMO

Starfleets drops 25 bucks to play the game early and quits 2 days before it's launches because it's hard.

Classic.

You don't know what you're talking about. You fail to realise that I (a) played my brothers copy of the game - its his purchase and not mine, (b) the fact that I've been playing the full retail version of the game over the course of the weekend for several hours, (c) or how long I've complained about the tackling system even when the demo came out. Stop being a douche for once.

Sympathy vote, I reckon. What other teams do you want me to check? Rather not turn it on for just two sides

So I got it and started playing online. 2W-7L-12D.

Incredibly fustrating that skillmoves/precision stuff is not working at all for me so I find it nearly impossible to score.

I feel like this defensive system was put in place to allow the offense to flow better rather than make defense skill based or more fun to play. I had to stop using the new mechanics like contain and standing tackle because they are pretty much just obstacles to applying pressure/playing like you used to.

If you dont use standing tackle or contain, how do you defend? Just sliding tackles?

VFL Wolfsburg - 4 stars
Werder Bremen - 4 stars
Bayer 04Leverkusen - 4.5 stars
Borussia Dortmund - 4.5 stars
Bayern München - 5 stars
SC Freiburg - 3.5 stars
Hoffenheim - 4 stars

Getting really excited about the game now. Been playing the demo for the last couple of hours and I think I've pretty much got the tackling down. Anyone else picked it up yet?

if you get in good position it will trigger a standing tackle for you with less fouls and kicking of the ball too far. Although admittedly sometimes your guy keeps running with the ball a similar distance and there are serious clipping problems against the AI.

I do grab tho.

You know, you're probably better off with a sliding tackle than the standing one; players often make this ridiculous lunge forward [as someone said on the EA forums today] that take them out of the game more so than sliding would ironically.

Yeah I was gonna say that.

Squad update is nearly daily, if not, weekly updated.

Not that it matters when transfers are closed.

Just played 5 or so games against a guy I played a ton of FIFA 11 with. Because neither of us are great at dribbling and shit it was really fun. Felt balanced, and more realistic in terms of the pace of the games.

I do agree that it seems like, in general, it takes less skill to be good at attacking than it does to be good at defending, and that imbalance creates a situation where anyone that knows skill moves is going to beat you if you don't. Sure, the answer would be "learn them", but there's nothing satisfying about not being able to tackle a guy has he sidesteps your whole team and walks right to the goal. I'm still not sure how you're supposed to be able to cope with tackling in every situation.

For example: I use RB to have the CPU contain the player, but the CPU will never make a tackle, the only time he'll win the ball is if the opponent fucks up and runs the ball right to him. So you have to switch to the CPU player to try and make a tackle, at which point you lose control of the player you've been controlling and trying to get in a deeper position. And naturally he just runs where he feels. So if you fuck up your tackle, the guy can just run right though.

I mean, maybe I'm playing wrong. That's very likely. I'm certainly getting better at controlling my defense, but there's a lot of occasions where it just feels like the odds are completely stacked against the defender.
