Fire Emblem Fates' localization doesn't have the petting minigame

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Yup.

Nobody outside of a tiny minority of people is going to care about this considering how a lot of people found its presence in the game off-putting to begin with.

Who cares about minorities right, throw them overboard while you're at it.

See, I could've taken my analogy through to its inevitable conclusion, but I thought I already antagonised people enough, so I left that bit up as a mere implication. :D Thanks for voicing the next step, though.

On another note, if you can point me towards other lunchbox makers good SRPG games that can replace Fire Emblem's place in my heart, feel free.

Invisible, Inc. maybe?

It's not technically censorship, since there's no outside force absolutely forcing Nintendo to make this change. It's still their call at the end of the day and they could still push ahead with it if they want. President Obama isn't putting his hand on their shoulder and saying, "Nintendo, no."

But it's definitely a change made out of fear of controversy. What kind of controversy is debatable, but they know we're now in a time where trivial things can escalate very quickly on social media.

Unless there's something I'm missing, it looks like the characters are fully clothed and just smile, tilt their head slightly, and blush a little when you brush their cheek.

Nintendo is truly pushing the boundaries of hardcore pornography.

Yea. I really don't see the fuss.

I thought Fire Emblem was a serious SRPG. What happened.

We'll apparently you're gonna be getting your Serious "No Out There Content Allowed" Vanilla RPG. :/

Continuing Sakurai's food analogy, if there's a little bit of fecal matter in my lunchbox and someone's kind enough to fish it out for me, I say thank you. I'm not sad something got removed from my lunchbox. I'm not sad I'm getting "less food". The overall product is improved. Sure, I could've just ignored the little piece of shit and eaten my way around it, but that tiny turd being in there somewhere made the whole lunchbox worse.

And yes, while there are people out there that love to eat shit, that's really no concern of mine. Even empathy has a limit. Please go and satisfy your shiteating fetish elsewhere and keep it out of my lunchbox.

Amazing post.

Can we stop pretending there was a huge swath of people crying out for this to be cut? There were no petitions or cries for this to be censored. If it released here it probably what have amounted to same reaction seen here, "that's weird and kind of creepy"
And that's why it is called preventive censorship, i.e. removing contents before they can even do harm.
All I see is people doing some rather remarkable mental gymanistics to justify being happy about Nintendo cutting material from their games, secondary or useless as it might be.

They might have been already cutting content from werstern releases in the past, but current climate in the gaming press is surely exarcebating the problem at an unprecedented level. The proof of this is that publishers are shunning away potential profits of marketing a game in the West (I'm talking about the Dead or Alive debacle here) because of the resuting loss of image caused by an angry internet mob.

I'm currently playing FE4, I just finished the chapter 5 where
The hero and his party got trapped and all die, while the hero's wife being mind controlled is now married to the bad guy.
No petting
No drugs
No moe shit
Good characters and story about war and heroes.

Unfortunately FE probably won't ever have that level of story anymore.

From what I saw (rough translations months ago) it was a lot of lines of dialogue but not much substance.

Some characters had a few more interesting lines, but I wouldn't call it substantial characterization.

So more fluff, little substance. Guess that implies I wouldn't be missing out on much I suppose. Would still like to get them regardless.

What if you still talk to them, you just don't pet them? That'd actually be a decent compromise.

I'd be perfectly okay with this. We'd get the character interactions and (potentially) the CG artwork and in turn, we wouldn't have to go through the rub-a-dub-dub game to do so. Please let this be the case.

It's still a serious SRPG from a gameplay standpoint. Goofy character stuff and anime tropes have always been part of the series. The recent entries have been playing up character pairing more than was the case in the past (even though character pairing/supports existed in the past games as well).

That's more reasonable. But given how seemingly optional and silly this mini-game seemed to be, my fear is simply the slippery slope.

At this point, it'll be really interesting to see what they change in #FE, and not if they do it.

I mean this is nothing in comparison to #Fe, Everything in #fe is intrinsic to the game, and just not translate well. I wouldn't wish localizing that game on my worst enemy.

So more fluff, little substance. Guess that implies I wouldn't be missing out on much I suppose. Would still like to get them regardless.

I mean, you'd get something like Leo admitting people said that some people think he looked like a girl, that's the most you'd get out of it.

That's not exactly fair—FE4 blows every other Fire Emblem game out of the water in that regard.

It's not even close.

That sounds like it's on you, dude.

I question if you have a twitter because when all this was being first talked about with the face rubbing, it was all the buzz and how people didn't like it.

None of this shit would be happening if more people just played XCOM

Fire Emblem used to be a series with some reservation about it's cheesecake and it was something I respected. After not being impressed with Awakening, and playing #FE to realize it's shit, I don't think I'll be bothering with Fates if this is what the series will be from now on

I would totally buy X Com if I could headpat an alien.

Not everything. Optional elements like the hot springs DLC in #FE would be as intrinsic to the game as the petting in Fates.

Can you imagine what they could accomplish with current tech?
It's such a dang shame.

glad its out, looked really stupid and wasn't it rated pretty low on features they liked/wanted to return in the next game by japanese players?

Playing Resident Evil HD last night, I had an urge to pet Barry.

Also longed for a dialogue wheel with the option, "You look like Jeff Daniels!"

Fair enough, I meant more or less the soundtrack, not more of the optional stuff (and hot springs stuff would be able to pass by, it got through in Awakening).

The removal of "content" that flies flagrantly against the tone of the game and more or less amounts to pandering for pandering's sake is only a benefit. It's strange to me that so many people have this idea that more content inherently equals better.

If there was a remake of Star Wars: Episode I that removed or reduced Jar Jar Binks' role to try and make the overall message of the film better would you be crying out how that was censorship? Is that really different?

The feature was dumb, but removing it is silly, especially since it was completely optional.

Oh well.

How I feel about this. Didn't read much about it, but if the petting feature actually is an effective way to raise affinity, even though it's creepy, I'm sure I would use it and cutting it out seems silly, although completely understandable.

Still kinda funny to see meltdowns over this.

Is there a fan translation patch for FE4?

Yes.

Every non localized Fire Emblem game has a translation patch, the only one I can't really recommend is FE5's. It's.... functional, but the menus are garbled and the translation itself is iffy. (Like, arguably any fanslation is iffy, but FE5's has memes in it and isn't actually finished)

TBH, I wouldn't call it "effective", grinding spotpass/skirmishes would be faster.

The one currently floating around is about 95% complete with only the ending cinematics untranslated. I think there was an group trying to re-up the effort with a cleaner and fully finished translation but, like most of these projects, has been taking a while and I have no idea if it's still alive.

what are you talking about? i play fire emblem only for the excellently written dialogue, superb artwork and gripping story and relationships. i imagine a lot more people are in the same boat as me. this is a serious blow in the face. i won't be supporting this series anymore that's for sure.
