But thats the peculiar conundrum that Gloria must face, and when Colossal gives her that opportunity, the payoff arrives. Vigalondos economical use of CGI manages to give it extra layers of meanings in spite of the bizarre events unfolding onscreen. The movie presents its plot like a ridiculous gamble, and keeps pulling it off, somehow managing to justify its existence. As she stumbles through problems both silly and serious, thats the struggle Gloria faces as well.

'Colossal' could use a spot of tightening up, and there are times when it feels just a little too pleased with its own wilful strangeness. But by the climax all concerns have gone out the window, as Vigalondo delivers an operatic finale that feels both earned and genuinely cathartic. For better and worse, you won't have seen a movie like 'Colossal' before, and you won't again. And that, in itself, is a strong recommendation.

Youve never really seen a movie like Colossal. Its an alcoholism drama. Its a dark comedy. Its a kaiju movie. Its all of these things in one, and thanks to a particularly fine-tuned script and a tremendous balance of tone from Vigalondo as a director, it succeeds far more than it fails. Confronting our demons is much harder than we think, especially once we realize they control us, not the other way around. Confronting these demons sometimes requires a fight, and that fight aint pretty. But considering the collateral damage that ensues when we dont, confronting these demons is necessary.

So, what makes a monster? The answer Vigalondo provides is that its everything both inside and out, unreal and real, that are capable of being turned into a tools of destruction. But sometimes the carnage is far less obvious than felled buildings, and bodies in the street. Rather, its how failure and the sense of defeat curdles into a misguided sense of exacting revenge on a world that has wronged you. Its the kind of ground that breeds terrorists, killers and sometimes scariest of all, an old friend who just wants to help when youre down on your luck, but also senses an opening to gain the upper hand.
