Someone needs to make a list with Halo 3 four spots higher than Call of Duty 4, like. . . now.
Looking at the posts since the last update, H3 is going to jump out ahead of CoD4 by a ways, as of now at least. I'm quite surprised.

Just proves that GAF has at least some taste in shooters.
On that note, the high reviews and now voting position of Bioshock has been one of the most interesting phenomena I've seen this year. I play games for a lot of reasons, but these are apparently different reasons that most. I often find myself with tastes that are outside of popular opinion, but this year at least shed some light on why.

Halo 3 definitely should be a bit higher.

After having played it, Rock Band probably should be too.

What is your opinion on Bioshock?

Mine is that it was one of the best narrative video games ever with some very cool RPG and sandbox elements. As a shooter it was pretty poor.

Is that your opinion too?

So I can't vote for Portal? Sad, since I don't have Orange Box and can't really vote for it. For me Portal was a $20 download and it - not a compilation - is my GOTY.

I'll stick to a non-Portal top 3 then:

1) COD4
2) Bioshock
3) Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Rock Band should have been on my list. Curses at not being able to find it, and double curses that my brother lucked out on the 17th and picked it up and won't stop bugging me about how much fun he and his gf are having playing it.

Just vote for it, calder. If one part of a compilation alone is your GOTY, how would the other two parts make it NOT your GOTY? And if you put Portal on the top of the list, it'll just be counted as a vote for the Orange Box anyway. :p

Because, I never played it and have no idea if I'd have enjoyed paying 3x as much for it as a whole. For $20 on it's own, Portal was sheer perfection in two and a half hours. I have TF2 for PC as well, and it wouldn't list in my top 20. So right there that's a reason to not vote for OB. ;\

I see. Fair enough. But I doubt most people voting for Rock Band are judging it based on the fact that it's 3x as expensive as most next-gen games. If I took price into account, I'd probably have to switch my list around.

Bioshock's single player experience was excellent. Halo 3's on the other hand was quite poor. I loved going through Halo 3 in co-op, and it is the saving grace of that game. As for the multiplayer, well I gave up competitive multiplayer games after playing nothing but them for years.

I wouldn't be surprised if many people think the same way. That Halo 3's co-op mode saved it from being just another shooter with a crappy story line.

Opinions and all that. To me, Halo 3 and Bioshock were kind of complimentary. BioShock features a very rich and atmospheric world with great writing, acting and audio and art design. The gameplay was quite poor, from weak AI, repetetive fetch quests and just plain no new ideas beyond the mid-point (Inferno....2! Inferno....3!). And then there's the ending, where we have the collect the armor to open the door quest, the escort mission and the pattern-based last boss in three phases: fire, lightning and (wait for it) ice. How startlingly refreshing.

Halo on the other hand features brilliant AI and encounter design and incredibly satisfying gameplay, wrapped in a ridiculously deep feature set. The story is weak, and the depth that the world hints at is just never fleshed out. Some of the dialoge lines clunk.

I play games partly for stories and atmosphere, but mostly for gameplay. After playing Bioshock twice, I'd seen all it had to offer. Too much of the 'depth' was spent on options to fight enemies with poor AI, rather than creating enemies worthy of fighting with the deep tool set provided. Bioshock just felt empty and brain-dead to me from a gameplay standpoint. Halo 3 continues, to this day, to impress me every time I play it. The AI and mission designs coupled with the co-op/skulls have led to one new experience after another (I'm just getting into co-op, and holy crap does that change the ballgame).

I can see the argument for Bioshock being GotY because the things it did well, it did as well as anything this year; it's qualities hit you over the head. But it wasn't what I look for in a shooter, or in a game in general.

I agree with all that entirely. It just depends on the person in the end. Which they enjoy more - an atmospheric beautiful world with great dialogue and a reasonable story, or a game that is weak in all those areas but excels in how good it plays. Myself, I prefer the design elements more than the gameplay elements.

When you update the OP, do you erase the old numbers or store them somewhere?
It would be interesting to see how certain games move up and down in the top 20 or so as this thread gets longer and longer.

2. Bioshock - 3927

It should be able to stay in the Top 10, which is definitely fine with me.
