Speeding up the application process is what we're aiming to do in Switzerland as well.

It's not really that the money they have is not enough. It's that they aren't allowed to work and thus they are (mostly) young men with nothing to do. And especially for immigrants from foreign cultures working is very important for integration. You learn so many social rules and the language while working. That just doesn't happen lungering around at the train station. Your also less likely to commit crimes.

That said, the unemployment situation is already critical in some european countries, this amount of people in such a short time will cause problems no matter how it's handled.

Over 40% unemployement for under 30 in southern europe. Good luck finding work for all those migrants and not have our local youth all vote far right.

Yeah i pointed that out in the sentence below.

I don't think there's a good solution to this problem. And i doubt it's going to get better anytime soon.

Saying the UK should take in more is all well and good, but we simply can't afford to. We're struggling to afford the welfare state as it is despite what the left would have you believe, so admitting tens of thousands of economic migrants already in Europe and refugees still in Syria/Iraq would do nobody any good. They'd be here and just basically left on the streets with no money, no food and no job.

Cameron isn't just being sensible, he's being realistic in the long term.

Maybe if America coughed up some cash given they were the primary cause of the recent middle eastern destabilisation then things could be different, and maybe US gaffers would be a bit slower to criticise Europe if they suddenly had a tax hike to pay for it.

Insert just about any country in Europe, North America, Asia, Africa, well... worldwide. It's not like France, Spain, Croatia or any other country have billions just lying around.

Thousands of refugees/migrants are moving towards Slovenian border. Police reservists were called, we will also receive additional help from Austria. My friend from special forces texted me that 'they are chasing those who illegally cross the border for whole day'. Around 1400 people are in refugee camps as I write this.

Our cops are very upset about work of their colleges on Croatian side, because they are just standing on the side

40 Croatian police officers escorted 1000 migrants to Hungary in a train. They claim this was agreed upon, HU denies.

"Munich fears migrants and beer hunters may not mix well at Oktoberfest"

"Tens of thousands of refugees have flooded into Munich since the start of the month when Angela Merkel effectively declared Germany’s borders open, sometimes more than 10,000 arriving in a single day on trains and buses.

Mixing that pace of new arrivals with up to 6 million beer-drinking revellers who usually descend on the Bavarian capital for two weeks of festivities could cause tensions, regional interior minister Joachim Herrmann warned.

“Our aim is to keep the various groups of people apart from each other so that conflict situations don’t arise,” Herrmann told journalists this week. “Especially those asylum seekers from Muslim countries who are not used to encountering very drunk people in public.”

I wonder how they'll segregate the excessive beer drinkers from the migrants. Maybe some reliable police tape will do the trick.

Have them join in on the festivities, what a way to be welcomed.

eurostat figures are now showing that 80% of 'refugees' are not from syria (those that have registered) maybe that is why they are clamouring for fake passports.

Imagine... Croats are actually not using force against women and children... Yeah, they are disgusting.

I see that Slovenian police used teargas on these people last night. Good guys Slovenian police, right?

Some people.... Unbelievable.

This is exactly why I said the British method is better. We're taking refugees straight from Syria and Lebanon and guaranteed that they'll actually be Syrian and not some Bangladeshi pretending to be one.

Any back story to this, or do we just need to take your word for it?

From the things I've seen until now, police used force when things got out of control at borders. Which is their job. What would you have them do? Look the other way and pretend nothing is happening?

"The incident happened at the Harmica (Slovenia/Croatia border)."

"After over an hour of tension, Slovenian riot police used tear gas to stop migrants, some with children, that were pushing against a police cordon at a bridge on the border."

Google it. It's been reported in the media this morning.

So they did their jobs when tensions got high. They are registering refugees, but can't handle these numbers all at once. It's a small country. And it seems like a bad idea to let thousands of people get into your country undocumented.

If anything, blame the EU for not helping out in managing the outer borders, not Slovenia.

The numbers are for April, May and June.

To treat fellow humans like this is just "Slovenian police "doing their job" ?

I dont know why the EU members are not sitting at a table right now and try to find a solution. The way its handled on the Balkan is terrible.

And? The Syrian crisis has been going on for a long time. Has something drastic changed in th last two months, other than Germany welcoming them with open arms?

Or is this your passive way of saying this information is irreverent because it doesn't include August and July.

What would you have them do? Just let anyone through without documenting them?

They are letting people through and giving them papers, but you can't expect a small country like that to be ready for thousands of people a day coming in.

Again, blame the EU for not having people in place to manage this, not the country being overwhelmed.

And yes, then when tensions get high and you have hundreds of people pushing against police, they will have to take measures.

It's easy to scream: Look at those evil policemen, while showing pictures of some kids and play on emotions, but that does not solve anything of the causes.

And? You made a very false statement on purpose. You said 80% of the "refugees", implying that it's 80% of those about whom we discuss here. When it's 80% of all the asylum seekers in Europe. It's a big difference, because the other "normal" applicants didn't just stop existing.

It does show that not all people coming in are refugees, so there need to be some checks and you can't just let everyone through. The story is always about Syrian refugees, but when the majority of applications is not from there (at least in that quarter, we don't know the exact number now) it shows that just opening the borders for and accepting everyone is a bad idea.

Sure. Travelling through the whole of Europe to simply end up in Holland or Germany has nothing to do wit being a war refugee. It has everything to do with: "Which country can give me the most money".

If I was a war refugee, I would be happy to stay at the first country I visited. We are in serious trouble because of the EU and their decision making. Buit no worries, things will change at the next elections where hopefully a lot of people will vote for a non EU Europe.

There's middle ground between "they all end up in Germany" and "they all end up in the country of first arrival", with everyone sharing the burden.

Check Q1 statistics. Check 2014 statistics. You'll find Albania, Serbia, Kosovo, Somalia etc. in there too. In much bigger numbers than Syrians and Afghans.

The facts are that most "refugees" are fleeing for economical reasons. Not for war or anything else. This is unacceptable. We have no room/money for these people. We are not obliged to help them. Not a single war refugee would travel all the way through Europe simply to have a roof over his head. Not a single one.

Let Saudi Arabia or Qatar (fucking richest countries in the world) do something. It is their region, their religion, their language, their people and therefore their responsibility. EU gladly bends over though because it is booming business nowadays.

Good luck getting someone to agree when they randomly draw 'Romania' from the hat that also has Germany and Sweden in it.

That's the point. So people need to be checked instead of just opening borders and letting everyone through. Or do you mean that people from Albania and Serbia should also all be accepted?

Which creates a lot of frustrations with Europeans, since these people are refugees and if a safe country is willing to accept them, why complain? There are millions of people living just fine in Romania, Poland, Estonia, Hungary, Slovenia, Spain, etc.

Asylum seekers from safe countries have a acceptance rate of 0.1-0.4% in Germany.

Germany already stated they won't accept anymore asylum requests from the Balkan countries. And I think this is a fair point. There is no war, no dictatorship, nothing to justify anymore asylum for these countries.

Edit: asylum can be granted under clear conditions, for the rest there are other conditions under which they can obtain residence and working permits in EU countries. If they can't, they must go back to their home country. It's not that complicated.

Immigrants from safe countries have been abusing (or trying to) the right for asylum for years, especially from former Yugoslavia.

Main issue is still how incredibly slow the deportation process is. We have now the situation that the Syrian crisis is being abused to slip through the ranks.

The whole situation is handled poorly by europe for years now.

From those same eurostat figures you can guess that almost 50% of them have a chance of obtaining refugee status, we do have an obligation to help them.

It's not just Syrians, it's Afghans, Iraqis, Somalis, Eritreans, Libyans etc.

Thanks, but are those people waiting in their own countries or in Germany while their application is processed? Because when the system is being overloaded now with the amount of people, it is useful to filter them out as soon as possible at the border.

The blame for this is the very stupid way in which the whole asylum requests are handled in EU and the stupid Dublin regulation. To make an asylum request you need to be in that country. It encourages smugglers and illegal border crossing. It's really something that needed to be fixed yesterday by EU and they are stuck in discussing numbers and having electoral statements than rather do something useful.

The first safe country they enter has an obligation to help them. Once they decide to leave that country they are no longer fleeing war or percecution, but are economic migrants.

You speak the truth. The truth a lot of people here seem to be unwilling to aknowledge. There is not a single reason why all these refugees get to Holland, Germany or even further than that. No single reason, except money. They should all be refused.

That's just self-serving crap from northern EU countries to have an excuse to not carry their share of the burden.

Dude. No single EU country is obliged to accept economical refugees. Sorry, your argument falls in the water. Also, I don't know if you know but all recent polls show that a vast majority of the EU citizens (or citizens per country) don't want this and that they want closed borders. If this is really a democracy, why can't we (the people) decide? Fuck EU. Screw Greece and their problems as well. They all created that shit themselves (corrupt politicians) and now we (EU) have to pay for it and never get back any money from it? We, as citizens, have to pay more taxes for that shit?

Look at Switzerland. That is how it should be done. No refugees, own coin, no EU shit going on. Perfect.

Just a quick and unrelated question but if you're an EU citizen and you move to Germany.. Are you given the same benefits that the country provides to its own citizens and are you legally allowed to work?

Pretty much. And the reason why we are now in this situation. Because the other countries refused to listen to Greece and Italy (and even Hungary more recently) when they complained that they can't handle the situation anymore.

Hey, I'm all for fuck EU. I fucking hate the spineless cowards that comprise the EU, not willing to ever take responsibility for anything.

You clearly don't want to hear this, but the refugees are a fact and no semantic acrobatics change the fact that many EU countries have been happy to take in the benefits, but now that the time comes to sacrifice together, they take a step back.

Spineless.
