Have you considered the outlandish possiblity that not all people agree with you and therefore can disagree with the choices in this list or are we all supposed to only say - ' Great choices' and Well Done!

Lol I didn't even make any comments about W3 myself. Disagree all you want, back your opinion up if you want, but what he said was silly. Moment-to-moment gameplay is decisively mediocre? There's been enough talk on GAF itself to know that a huge chunk of people don't feel that way. So presenting it as some immutable fact and then saying it only won GOTY because it's a large open world isn't really meaningful in any way. It's just the same old "holier than thou" shitpost people make because they think they know better than everyone else.

Glad to see Until Dawn win best horror, a Canada-set game is always a plus in my books (note to Canadian AAA developers: more Canuck protagonists please). Absolutely loved it and I hope Supermassive's next game is cool as hell, whatever genre it is in.

Also, how is The Taken King not the best expansion?

Definitely not. I might have been the reason the last major one was closed and reopened with a new set of rules.

I just kind of thought that GAF loved The Witcher 3.
We will see if GAF loves Witcher during GAF goties. I predict fierce battle between Bloodbored and Bitcher :)

I guess you're right on opinions and lists and all that, but thinking back, isn't Paradox well known for including just massive lists worth of DLC for their games? Wasn't there a thread earlier in the year centered around an interview between like Angry Joe and a Paradox employee about how they never fixed one of their major releases or something, or am I completely mixed up on this?

I really feel like Paradox is only on the list for Cities: Skylines, and at the same time, I'm pretty sure Cities: Skylines could practically be labelled as an indie game with how few people worked on it.

This is probably the thread.

You do seem to be correct, I hadn't seen that thread. But I can not deny that I love Cities, so there is that!

I'm still personally undecided. After trying to play through that Bloodborne DLC and re-experiencing that unoptimized framepacing, and literally having the game freeze on me altogether, I dunno... It's a beautiful game, and is a huge step forward for FromSoftware... But their lack of support for the game post-launch, because they're too focused on making their next annual release, as much as I want Dark Souls 3, is kind of a big deal to me.

This is probably the thread.

Yup, that's the thread. Nice find!

I fully expect Bloodborne or MGS5 to take GAF GOTY. Those fan bases are fucking nuts. Witcher is a great game but doesn't have nearly the amount or intensity of fandom behind it as those franchises. People will fucking stab you over suggesting stuff like pausing in Souls. On the other side, someone is probably combing through old Kojima tweets right now trying to find hints to unlock Chapter 3. No way anything else wins.
I certainly hope for Bloodborne over MGSV. Personally wasn't a fan of a mediocre open world approach to something done better in Ground Zeroes. Game would have been so much better if it had just been a full game of Ground Zeroes.

Totally what I have in mind as well.
It'll be hard for the Witcher 3 to take the crown on gaf. But I'm not going to even mad anyway. It's just how gaf is.

I think it will be Bloodborne or Witcher. Many MGS fans didn't like V(myself included). Most MGSV threads are more negative than anything else.

The Witcher 3 doesn't deserve GOTY imo. The gameplay was mediocre. The main story wasn't anything special at all. For me gameplay should come first so BB or MGS:V should be the GOTY.

I think it is super cool that Witcher 3 is getting story nods. There are scenes in that game, where the facial animation and story tellling combined for some of my favorite moments in gaming. I know individual awards are kind of dumb because they're all objective but man, Witcher 3 is fantastic.

I'm totally okay with this opinion until you talk about story. I fucking love me some Witcher and the gameplay has always been a weakness... but maaaan the story deserves better than "wasn't anything special". It has some of my favorite moments in gaming, I couldn't disagree more about it, the game's story is really well done.

Undertale isn't 1 in every applicable category? Blasphemy.
Seriously, though, as sweet as Rocket League is, it simply can't hold a candle to Undertale, nor does any other of the games on the best indie list. Hell, Undertale is GOTY by far.

Really, wasn't expecting much. Game awards are generally garbage. Not expecting the Kayleighs to be much better.

I can understand why you're saying that. I also loved some moments
like the final chapter when you defend the castle or when you fight the wild hunt in the sea.
My problem is with the plot itself. It's just too simple and you can see the ending 10 miles away.

i was under the impression that this list was voted for by users and was not the product of an editorial staff, which if its true is worth mentioning. it wound up being a very cool list.

BEST MONITOR
1. Samsung U32E850R
BEST SHOOTER
1. Star Wars: Battlefront
BEST MULTIPLAYER
1. Grand Theft Auto Online
BEST RACING
1. Need For Speed
BEST STRATEGY
1. StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void

What?! I'm really surprised at these number one picks here.
Granted Legacy of The void has been out for a while in beta but game just came out and it wins best strategy already? Same for Battlefront and also laughing considering it pales to so other shooters or multiplayer games.
Best racing NFS? Really? With the multitude of racing games available on consoles you go and pick that? Besides if these awards are mainly for pc gaming, how is that a good pick considering it isn't even out yet for the damn platform.

This is easily one of my favorite things about the game

There are a LOT of escort type missions, and being able to run/ride a horse makes them so much more bearable
It may be pretty low down on the list of "innovations" for most people, but by golly when I was playing Fallout last week I found myself internally screaming at NPCs to match my pace and get out of my way -_-

Always interesting to see results from awards that havnt been brigaded, battlefront most likely never of won if any reddit subreddit attacked this.

Best Innovation goes to Witcher 3?

Forgive my ignorance, but what did that Game do that was so new and refreshing?
Combined quality of content typically only found in linear games with huge, detailed and beautiful open world while providing tons of choices followed by proper consequences.

To me it's funny how they include things like "best mobo" or "best pc case" in the middle of the games categories.

The chosen games are solid. It's a fairly solid list.

Well could not disagree with Witcher 3 or Until Dawn and Life is Strange. Both fantastic. But cant help feeling Undertale deserved more, such a wonderful game.

.....but how is that "innovative"? It isn't something that has never been done before.

I mean yea, it does it well... But that just means it is worthy of " best story" or "best graphics" of the year. You wouldn't say a game is innovative for telling a good story, or having good combat?

Demons Souls (or dragons dogma), arguably the best combat found in an arpg (especially at the time) wouldn't get "most innovative" for it's well done combat. It would get "best gameplay" category "RPG".

I guess its all gonna come down to opinions being opinions...

BEST HORROR GAME
1. Until Dawn
2. Dying Light
3. Soma
4. Stasis

Looks like its time for Rami Malek aka Josh Washington to

Witcher 3 is a huge leap forward in open world game design, successfully merging traditional RPG elements seamlessly into an open world. It doesn't feel like an open world game so much as it feels like another Witcher RPG. No one else has done this, or even tried to; it's a huge accomplishment to make the jump to open world without sacrificing anything about the previous, non-open world, games.

Personally, I think Witcher 3 has set the bar for open world RPGs, and I doubt it'll be surpassed for many years.

It's really not.
They took the Witcher 2 and made the map bigger. That's it.

Oh wait, they also added Roach.

I agree. This entire "I hate the gameplay in this game, therefore the people who gave it awards must prefer open worlds over gameplay" narrative is stupid, and doesn't take into account the fact that the people who give the awards can have different opinions.
