My interpretation of the ending.
The world is not completely destroyed. Yes in ruins, but Athena mentioned she had a message for mankind. And my take on that is that man is not completely gone, or gone forever. There were birds flying around (with the souls), not all life is lost.
The camera at the final ending focused more on the sky than the cliffs or the water below. The whole game, the camera would give little nods/hints of what to focus on without giving away exactly what to do in many of the puzzles. That felt like this again. SSM giving the idea that Kratos is in the clouds with the lightning strike and thunder. And if you notice, the sun seems to have returned, the clouds in focus of the camera are much brighter. And you can even see sun rays peircing through the clouds.
Him laying on a carving of a phoenix or angel was like symbolism. Literally giving hope to man. Dying, miraculously surviving with the thought of one day he may or may not return.
Kratos = the god we know now?
mental notes while playing..
-kratos technically created the world as it was at the end of the game by destroying the gods, like god
-i dont buy the whole kratos killing himself, then hinting him killing himself again in the water, whats the point of that?
-gaia never died originally maybe because she contained the tree of life, and possibly
left it behind? (1:46, a tree standing, even after gaia evaporated)
-ok this one may be a stretch, but hear me out. opening credits, "before the age of twilight". from norse mythology, twilight could represent series of major events, including a
great battle foretold to ultimately result in
the death of a number of major figures, the occurrence of
various natural disasters, and the subsequent
submersion of the world in water. Afterward, the world resurfaces anew and fertile, the surviving gods meet, and the world is repopulated by two human survivors. all of the bolded happened by the end. twilight also means renewal of the divine powers.
*this would explain why not all the gods died, in greek mythology there are dozens of gods.
(wiki)The game was released on March 16. 3:16 is a famous verse from the Bible.John 3:16- "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
And about hera...
-(wiki)Many myths render Hera as jealous of his amorous conquests and a consistent enemy of Zeus' mistresses and their children by him. A drunk would be the perfect way to portray her
