Jesus that felt dated as hell. Could've fooled me into thinking it was an early 80s movie or something.
This movie was amazing. Talked about the KGB and the Lienz Cossacks, and I loved the 006 subplot.
Yeah, the whole "Goldeneye Satellite" is really corny 007 stuff that was used like 3 or 4 times, but the rest of the movie was great. Xenia was awesome, Boris was an idiot but great comic relief, Trevelyan was a sweet idea for a villain that was kinda-reused in Skyfall.
It was so disappointing because he seemed like such a great Bond and GoldenEye was so good . . . but it was all downhill after GoldenEye. The other films have some moments but a lot of bad writing, cheese, and bad casting (Sure, Denise Richards is super scientist.).Er.. I think Goldeneye has probably aged the best from the Brosnan-era. It's got a more realistic tinge while still being fun. It's got issues, like every Bond movie does, but there's great stuff in there.
The cast in that movie is AMAZING. So many great actors, some in bizarre as hell roles:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113189/
Sean Bean, Famke Janssen (in the role that made her famous in the US), Joe Don Baker (so many great roles), ROBBIE COLTRANE with MINNIE DRIVER playing his wife! ALAN CUMMING as 1337 h4x0r Boris!
EEEYESS! I AM EENWEENCIBULL!
Age well? It was never good. All the bond movies with Pierce Brosnan were terrible.
The rest of the Brosnan era was completely awful though. I'm amazed it lasted as long as it did, Die Another Day was like a parody of Bond films.
No mention of Natalya, A.K.A. Izabella Scorupco A.K.A. cutest and hottest and bestest bond girl ever and my waifu, GAF you have failed. Get out.
Also the most useful, least defenseless Bond Girl. She's central to the plot, not really a damsel in distress, and is the one that really saves the day.

Bonds facial expressions when he's racing with Xenia are just hilariously bad.
Pause at 1:36 to see the laziest makeover of a stand-in stunt driver ever committed to celluloid.

There was a lot to love about GoldenEye back then and now; the amazing dam bungee dive stunt, Brosnan himself, Tina Turner's belting out a proper James Bond theme song, a great cast of characters that you actually remember (what other Bond film since has characters that you can remember?), one of the best, most physical, Bond fights in the telescope since the classic Bond/Grant fight in From Russia With Love. I'm not even counting how perfect Famke is a Bond villain.
There are problems, of course; the plot is a Goldfinger clone, the score, although still fun, definitely places it in the early 90s.
But it feels like a Bond film and I would much rather watch GoldenEye than the three dull messes that came afterward which just wasted all of Brosnan's talent.
What a lot of people don't realise is that Goldeneye was supposed to be a Dalton movie.
That's why it's good.

Isn't the music composed by Eric Serra? Thought he'd be considered a God on GAF.
People talking shit about Goldeneye, the best Bondfilm? Get the fuck out!
Best intro stunt ever!
I love the existential crisis the Bond writing staff has after the cold war ends. Tomorrow Never Dies had a newspaper mogul trying to start a war to initiate a leadership coup to get press rights in China.
I mean Fox News basically gets this criticism. At least as far as poisoning the political atmosphere of the U.S. I think what has turned out doesn't seem as much of a stretch as it was in 1997.I love the existential crisis the Bond writing staff has after the cold war ends. Goldeneye's soundtrack is quite bizarre, but I love it. Just like the Fifth Element.
so, i'm watching Goldeneye right now (for the first time since idon'tknowhowlongit'sbeen) and the EMP actually just blew up the satellite controll centre...
I'm also still giggling b/c of the look Prochnow gives Janssen's character when she's almost climaxing while shooting the station's personnel.
Yep. Dalton is the best Bond and you all know it.
Fuckin' right. Been saying it for YEARS and everyone thinks I'm crazy.
Also, wait Goldeneye was meant to be Dalton, you say?
Well.
That just furthers it along as one my favourite Bond flicks of all time.
On topic, I guess SOME aspects haven't really aged well (being a movie that's almost 20 years old, you'd expect some things to not hold up) but it still totally captured what made a good Bond entry, not just as a good flick.
