Grand Knights History Confirmed for Western Release

Actually, a fan-translation was started not too long ago, though I don't know how far are they.

But props to XSeed for doing this, will be getting it on PSN to turn my Vita into a Vanillware machine.

Excellent! I will consider this the premire Vita launch game. Sadly I have already sold my PSP to make room for the Vita but honestly if I had known this was coming I probably would have held on it. Oh well :)

Ricker: Actually, it's totally different. The overworld in this game is kind of like a big board game. I hesitate to make this comparison, but think Unlimited SaGa (only... you know... better!). ;) If you're not familiar with Unlimited SaGa, then I guess you could think Odin Sphere... only, without the actual battle stages. You directly hop from one spot on the map to the next, moving space by space across the board to get from point A to point B, with events and battles and NPCs popping up along the way.

As always, I love seeing publishers willing to take crazy risks on niche PSP games. I hope XSEED will be able to include something like the beautiful hardcover artbook that was the Japanese pre-order bonus, though it probably won't happen.

Yo wyrdwad, there are reports that story is kinda de-emphasized in this game, is that true? Are there villains, cool event scenes/character moments like in Odin Sphere/Muramasa, is there any kind of "narrative" as people like to say?

I had to keep my mouth shut in the speculation thread yesterday. *heh* Definitely glad to have awesome companies like XSEED around who continue to take chances on games.

Randomkid: Definitely more of a gameplay-driven title this time around. There's a story, but it is, indeed, de-emphasized -- which actually fits really well with the atmosphere the game creates, as the whole thing takes place during a fierce three-sided war, and the first thing on everyone's mind is to win the war and NOT DIE. :)

I actually just explained it in detail on Hardcore Gaming 101, so I think I'll just copy/paste that explanation here:

Grand Knights History is, for all intents and purposes, a PSP MMORPG... but set up in such a way that it doesn't really require a constant internet connection -- you can just pop online for a moment, download and upload data, then go offline and play against AI-controlled knights sent out by other players while other players play against AI-controlled knights sent out by you. Then, when you're back to a wi-fi hotspot, you can upload your progress.

It has an offline component with a story, too... but the real purpose of the offline component is to recruit squires and train them to be... erm... grand knights, so you can send them to fight in the online war. Every part of the story exists to help you achieve that goal.

XSEED, I love you guys.

Day one when hits PSN, unless XSEED releases a "deluxe" edition at retail with an OST sampler and/or art booklet.

Speaking of XSEED, do we have an OT for Solatorobo yet!

Hope the community will be healthy to keep the MP alive. Any news of Japanese/European/US players being able to send their knights against each other?

That doesn't sound too bad. It sidesteps nearly all the problems I have with MMOs, but the ones left are still pretty big. Still sounds like a game you can never win, just play until you tire of it. And since it's turn-based, it might not take long for me. :(

Oh well, the art and music should entertain me for a decent amount of time...

So the offline portion is really only to train troops for online battles? It doesn’t have a single player story? Ugh.

I’m leaning towards not getting now.

So we choose the side we fight for out of the 3?

It does, just not something super in depth like Tactics Ogre.

Ah, that's pretty disappointing to hear. I was hoping for a deep single-player game. Still, I'll approach it with an open mind until I know more.

Well, I will have to think about it. The game just really seems designed towards a MMO (multi-player) experience, as Tom said. I was hoping the main focus was the single player game, but you have the option to play online if you want. However, it’s the opposite of that.

And btw, using Tactics Ogre is a bad example on story expectations, most do not live up that, even dedicated, good single player RPGs. :) I wouldn’t expect anything to Tactics Ogre to story.

True...you've got a point there.

I'll be purchasing this and Dragon's Crown.

I wish they were doing the latter as well

I really liked what Xseed did with Ys as opposed to what Ignition did with Muramasa

Didn't plan on picking up anything other than UMvC3 for the rest of the year. I'll probably grab this now too

Whats the music in the trailer used for? Special battle, boss battle, or is it in game at all/special version of a certain track?

they are working on the second chapter of trails in the sky. However, dont expect it to come anytime soon

I've heard rumors that sales of TITS part 1 were pretty disappointing, so I'm hoping they are still gonna do parts 2 and 3.

Great news. I shall import day one, then buy the digital Ghostlight release in the UK.

Edit: Just seen Rising Star are bringing it to the UK

My body is so very ready for this. Getting it day one.

Bigger problem by far is that retailers might not even stock UMD games by the time it's ready to come out. GKH is being worked on super-fast and is coming "this winter" (read, no later than February) for a reason.

It truly is sad that the best thing to happen to the PSP was its death; that's when all the good games started coming over here. :(

...and I just noticed that they annonced Grand Knights History exactly 3 weeks after Corpse Party.
