HaloGAF |OT| Not a thread about Halo

Yea I really feel Gaming Community is the best spot for us since after everything, even all the OT topics we discuss, we are held together by our interest in Halo.

We should just have been allowed to not always talk about Halo in the Halo OT threads, since its not even the Halo thread in the GAMING section, it was just the the Halo Community thread.

I feel this was a bad call by GAF moderators.

RIP Tawpgun.

This fucking game. Never really quit games in any Halo series. Ever. Then tonight.

Game starts 4v1 in Snipers - no teammates join, I'm spawn killed and finally quit down 20-3
CTF - 3 times in a row I join games losing by 2. On teams where there are only 2 players.
BTB - 2 games in a row join in progress with a team getting spawn trapped.

What the fuck 343? How did this happen?

it's accessible.

noob.

Nobody likes video games here anyways.

I only ever go to this part of the forum when the Miami Heat are playing, or to look at GIFs of Korean pop stars. That's how I noticed this thread. The name sounded almost like Halo, so I clicked on it.

Imagine my surprise.

Since I've got a bunch of PMs, I can elaborate here so you can all see.

We've tried over the past few months to more closely manage large communities. One of the original ideas behind the Community Forum was to ensure that large communities did not continually dominate the first page of the main board (among other things). Additionally, since relocated to the Community Forum, I think you'd agree that you've been pretty loosely moderated.

As a result, we've gotten very regular complaints from posters both long-time and new (or trying to break in) about the conduct of certain posters in the thread, the topics being discussed, posts violating TOS, etc. The issue is not "PMing moderators too much." That mindset is part of the reason why this was necessary in the first place -- because some people may think that these threads aren't moderated and they can get away with breaking the rules. Breaking the thread into two components-- people who want to talk about Halo and people who simply like Halo and want to talk with other people who like Halo-- makes it easier on us to moderate the thread as well.

This is, of course, an issue separate from our initiative to prevent exclusive communities from forming or becoming isolated and/or insulated communities. We believe breaking apart the thread will allow new members to break into the game-related discussion and will prevent the community from becoming too isolated/insulated.

The thread locking does not have anything to do with one member or one person's actions. Yes, there have been lots of non-Halo related things posted in here that get cross-posted elsewhere. That's a reason why we're doing this but not the only reason.

If you have suggestions, we're open to hearing them.

Yeah, exactly. And we still talked about Halo plenty. What are we going to do when the weapon rebalancing goes live? Oh god, we're expected to use the Halo 4 OT, aren't we?

so the solution is to rename the thread and move it in a different identical subforum? the thread was already broken up. this is like sweeping leaves on a windy day.

Y2Kev, is it acceptable for us to talk about Halo in this thread?

Does NeoGAF have no way that you could inform said posters that they're breaking the rules and should refrain from such conduct other than in the form of a ban?

Halo 4 sucks but I like you guys so this was a much needed change

So if you want to talk about halo 4, do it in the OT.

I actually forgot about that thread. I guess we are supposed to talk about Halo in there, however keeping tabs on both thread seems like a ton of work.

Is this inherently a bad thing? I'm genuinely curious as to why something that is posted in the HaloGAF thread, and then is referenced in another thread (supposedly full of people who don't frequent HaloGAF) is frowned upon.

If anything, to me, this cross posting helps expand the discussion and brings new people and ideas into a community.

So are we not supposed to talk about Halo 4 here in HelloGAF?

Missed this in the last OT,

"What's the difference between Plywood's favorite pornstar and Forge? One's Grey. And the other's a pornstar!"

But, good work son. Good work. RIP HaloGAF

The Halo 4 OT went nearly two weeks without a single post, lol. There's a few HaloGAF refugees posting there now, though.

Yeah, that's kinda how I always saw it, too.

Thanks.

Suggestions:
1. Change thread title from HelloGAF to HaloGAF. This thread is an off topic community thread for HaloGAF and not Halo like the gaming side community Halo OTs

2. Have a mod play more Halo thus making them more invested in HaloGAF or just make one of us a mod for HaloGAF.

So for arguments sake lets say the exact same thing happens in this thread. We shit post as much and we post Halo as much, I get some Forza info from a friend and I post it here. Then what happens?

All this does in reality is make it harder for new members to become part of this community because Its harder to find and not directly (in name) linked to Halo. While you discredit self moderation I think it was well accomplished in the Halo OT. Everyone knew the boundaries of others and didn't overstep them (for the most part)

It really seems like you culled community growth with this. My only suggestion would be gives us back a HaloGAF OT but I doubt you would consider that.

Yeah - I didn't even know it was still active. Even reading through the past few pages it basically seems like brief summaries of Halo 4 news posts from Waypoint and not much discussion.
