Horror-GAF |OT|

Decided I'd watch the movie today to get my mind off something that's been bothering me lately. So, I didn't really find it scary, but that's something I like about it, there weren't any jump scares and the monster itself isn't gruesome or terrifying, a lot of the violence is somewhat off screen and I think theses are the movies strengths, but I can understand why a horror fan might not enjoy the movie. Overall I thought it was great and I enjoyed it a lot, it wasn't what I was expecting but I really appreciate what the creators did with the characters and its overall theme. I think the end was cheesy
Implication of the father being the Babadook
but at the same time, it works. My favorite thing about the movie though is probably the theme of
not letting emotional baggage control your life
and that was something I really needed at this point. So I'm glad I took the time to watch it. I'd probably rate it a 9.8, there's nothing I'd add, change or fix but something is keeping me from saying its perfect or a 10.

Both The Babadook and It Follows suffered the unfortunate fate of being way way overhyped, so despite being genuinely good movies they inevitably disappointed a lot of people who were expecting even more.

It Follows was definitely a good movie. I felt that it ran a little long though.

It's creepy to me how men's fashion looks identical to late 70s/early 80s slasher films. Like if the picture quality was up to snuff I wouldn't be able to peg the decade. Minus pay-phones and almost every girl not wearing a bra. And the short shorts. But I find shorts are getting shorter again.

Are you talking about a movie or how people dress right now?

So I was watching an ASMR video and the woman put on pink latex gloves and started opening up the 3Dio mic (which if you didn't know has "ears" to simulate an actual head) with a screwdriver and forceps. Anyway, those pink gloves gave me an idea...

You know what The Loved Ones did for the "torture porn" genre? We need a giallo like that. Just all out super pink Lisa Frank shit with a giallo plot. Please?

Both? Maybe I'm just getting old so it stood out to me more or something.

True. You're right though, the way people dress is ridiculous. I guess I sort of look out of place though, rockin baggy pants and hoodies. 90's life. You'll never catch me wearin skinny jeans.

So I marathoned Rob Zombie's Halloween and Halloween 2 last night. I liked them overall (but then again I like Zombie's style and adore TDR).

Regarding the second movie's plot..
Do people believe the movie takes place inside the girl's head and that she killed everybody? I thought the plot of this movie was lackluster otherwise but then again you can't expect much from slasher flicks.

Nah, she just
went crazy, the DC of the film also makes it clearer that what happened really did, and she just "inherits" Mike's legacy in a way.

Pleasantly surprised by The Canal. The acting sells that movie, all the leads are great and Claire was a very believable support character. Great performance by that actress. The first half was depressing, imagine what you would do if
you caught your gf like that. And it was going on for over a year, damn
. It had pretty much every cliché you could think of, but it worked since the overall performance quality sold everything. I imagine other people wouldn't even finish this movie, but I really liked it.

What really sold me on it was the directing. Normally I don't notice that kind of thing, but there were a lot of cool shots, clever little tricks, and some great use of the color red.

Agree, it was a visually interesting movie. The restroom and canal in particular were really well shot. It was "predictable" but really, what horror movie isn't at this point?

I know Halloween's over but I'm watching The Taking of Deborah Morgan. So far the characters have subverted a lot of the standard tropes, which is cool, but there's something I don't understand:

Why didn't they just keep trying to burn the body when they found out that the mom had escaped instead of going after her? If they burned the body she would have snapped out of it and there would be no need to go after her. Did they absolutely HAVE to catch her to burn the body? It's not like she had it.

Was the Green Inferno really that bad? I usually enjoy Roth's movies.

Was ok. Probably too gory and demented for the masses and too comedic for the hardcore horror fan. I still can't figure out if I actually liked the movie or just had a good time with the friend I went to see it with.

I can't not see it, and while I doubt I'll love it, I'll be very interested to see which impressions mirror mine. So many strong opposing views about Green Inferno.

The plot seemed to be a mess.

At first it seemed to take a big dump on activism. IMO Roth tried to portray that it is futile to fight for the right cause and that activists are a bunch of unorganized hypocritical douchebags. It is very cynical in its presentation but I could cope with it since I didn't take it too seriously. Then the ending happens and whithout spoiling too much, it just does not fit the rest of the plot.

I guess many people would say that the first half of the film is terrible. It surely l has a lot of build up but I didn't feel that it was horrible to watch. Everything at the camp was great imo and very exciting to watch. Again, as with the plot, you should perhaps not take it as a 100% dead serious project.

It's not the greatest thing ever but definitely fun to watch. Surprisingly the visuals were fairly clean considering the story.

The whole premise is stupid from the start. What dumb ass would agree to go to a foreign country and chain themselves to large machinery that's guarded by machine guns? They were asking to be buried in the jungle be it from cannibals or soldiers. Hell I kind of expected some wood chipper action.

I don't know, the movie was well set up and executed so maybe I liked it more than I think. The beginning was a bit long but it didn't feel like it drug on pointlessly. Kind of felt like he was trying to avoid the movie being a shallow kill box. In hindsight it reminds me a lot of Fulci's Zombie 2 which I watched over Halloween and enjoyed immensly.

I think the premise is intended to be stupid since the activists are supposed to be portrayed as idiots. That's just my reading, though. The whole situation turning against them and their 'ideals' plays a huge part in it.

I read the film as a really misantrophic attempt to degrade current social trends. (Veganism, activism, alternative lifestyle). Having this premise in mind, I felt that the movie was well done (and funny, I'm sorry...) right until the ending in which the whole premise falls apart.

What are must own horror collections? I've been browsing Amazon and just the web in general and I see a vast amount of horror collection dvd and blurays. There seems to be a lot of fluff out there so I would love GAF's opinion.

I thought that was brilliant in turning the tables on the activists.

I like Green Inferno till further in when they started doing really stupid shit and bad attempts at humor
the jacking off in the cage stuff, and the whole ending plus that groan worthy post credit scene......

Since we're on the topic, besides Holocaust, what are the must watch cannibal movies? Are there any without animal shit?

Apocalypse and Ferox are probably the other big ones. Ferox is more of the same and has animal cruelty in it. Apocalypse I enjoyed because it was so different from the rest of the Cannibal films which all kinda just felt like same shock gore flicks. Apocalypse from what I recall had no real animal injured in it.... and it had John Saxon for once not playing a cop.

I personally think the whole genre is despicable, and the only one worth watching is holocaust because the theme of the movie is how much it hates itself.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Spider Baby are good cannibal movies because they're not that kind of cannibal movie. (Spider Baby is absolutely ridiculous, but it's camp gold as far as I'm concerned.)

Yeah TCM2 and 3 are great. But it's the thing that played Leatherface in TCM03, the remake, that is a disgusting turd.

Derp, I was wondering why the "0" was there hah. Had just woke up and didn't put 2 and 2 together. Not to mention the name mentioned. Also, yeah that's a bit disrespectful, wonder why he acted like that?

Apocalypse sounds cool, I'll check that out, thanks. It's hard to say no to a movie with Saxon. I might give Ferox a shot just because I have the score (came with Zombi 2's score) and I like it. Awesome theme song.

Yeah, honestly I'm not really into the shock for the sake of being shocking movies, so there's quite a few I have no interest in watching, but I do enjoy the other Italian horror movies from that era (mainly the zombie flicks) so I think it's time I finally gave it a shot and form my own opinion. I doubt I'll be digging too deep into the sub-genre. Zombie Holocaust is the only one I've seen if that counts.

Yeah, I was looking for the more traditional Italian ones, but I have been meaning to check out Spider Baby, so thanks for the reminder on that one. I've seen TCM, but I'll be giving it a rewatch soon in honor of Gunnar.

.

Wait, I thought we were talking about cannibal holocaust.

Well in case we are, I don't really have a problem with shock for the sake of shock, but the old cannibal genre in my view can be summed up as "primitive foreign natives will torture you, eat you and rape white women", which was a theme that I was not sad to see die in the 80s.

Not to mention these movies go and find some people and get them to be complicit in making movies with themes that denigrate themselves. Green Inferno also did this, the first trailer proudly proclaimed that it featured a tribe never before filmed. What a great introduction to the rest of the world those people had.

Cannibal Holocaust was not a deep or subtle movie, but it understood that the genre it was part of was despicable, and made the movie somewhat interesting. All the other movies, including green inferno lack any interesting themes, and are just part of a detestable racist tradition, that I was sad to see revived.

Surely you don't mean... *googles* What? How did I not hear about this? That fucking sucks, man. First Craven, now Hansen? RIP :(

Also Christopher Lee passed away earlier this year too. It hasn't been a good year for horror icons.

I was talking about both Cannibal Holocaust and the sub-genre in general. Sorry if my post was confusing.

I'm not expecting any kind of message or theme in the movies, and honestly I'd be surprised if I found any redeeming qualities in them at all. Sometimes it's just interesting to sit down and watch a dead genre and see how things have changed since then.

I probably won't bother with Green Inferno just because I don't find Roth's movies particularly interesting. Nothing against the guy though, he seems to be a fun personality and you can't deny his love for the genre.

Also Christopher Lee passed away earlier this year too. It hasn't been a good year for horror icons.

He may not be as big in the genre as Lee, Craven or Hansen, but losing Roddy Piper was a big blow to the genre too, even if just for They Live. He's so iconic because of that and I'm not even a wrestling fan. What an awful year.

So, I watched these at the local Night Visions film festival last weekend...

Not bad, but not that great either. I think the comparisons in the poster gave the wrong idea about the film. The lead character's antics managed to make the film entertaining though.

AKA The Pool

Somewhat surreal story about the strange things the two families encounter in the woods, and what lies beneath the still waters of the pond. Gruesome and enjoyable.

The best of the bunch, and the best zombie movie I've seen in years. Definitely better than The Crazies, which it was compared to. Highly recommended.

Holocaust didn't really understand or satire the genre itself, as it didn't really exist at that point. Holocaust pretty much created the cannibal boom, the few previous ones were never big or were bit different from what became a "trend".

At the same time, find it hard to call the movies racist when they typically never even said who the tribes were, and almost always made up fictional tribes. And most being filmed in the Philippines with fake natives playing fictional tribes

I personally don't get the racist cannibal thing people whine about. We have cannibals from the Hills Have Eyes that are mutated white people and Green Inferno showed a supposed native tribe. Who gives a shit what color they happen to be, their fucking eating whoever comes their way...priorities people, priorities!

Just saw the trailer and this is the first zombie movie I'm legit excited about in I don't know how long.

”The summer is shaping up to be perfect for the Johansson family. The weather is gorgeous, and the community warm and friendly. Even teenaged Gustav is feeling good about life in general, thanks to the new girl who has just moved in across the street. But this perfect suburban life is abruptly shattered by the arrival of a mysterious virus. — Blessed with a uniformly strong cast, Mikkelsen is not shy at all about the horror elements of his debut picture, but is also smart enough to understand that the lasting resonance – the real weight of the film – comes from first creating a believable and empathetic cast of characters. The horror that unfolds is all the more terrifying for just how grounded and plausible it all is. ” – Todd Brown / Fantastic Fest

”Extremely well-made — the kind of noir-ish horror that is rapidly becoming extinct.”
