I don't like Zelda

Came for this, first post no less.

3D Zelda's are amazing but the 2D Zelda's do nothing for me, as my entry into the series was Ocarina of Time. Skyward Sword looked really bad, so I skipped that.

I enjoy the 2D ones. 3D less so.

Zelda has always been about the journey. Few other games have the level of progression Zelda games have. It's more about the formula than the content.

You don't have to like it. If you dislike the fantasy genre then you're definitely not going to like it. Not everyone has to like something.

Personally I love exploring the dungeons, and the thematic differences between them. I enjoy the mixture of puzzles and combat, and I take satisfaction from clearing a dungeon and defeating a boss. Some of boss battles are ridiculously fun, like Goht, Blizzeta and Koloktos.

Making patently untrue claims like "the dungeons all look the same" makes your post come across like you're just trying to be edgy. You should better explain your criticism.

This makes me a bad person and/or gamer according to other threads. Of all the major franchises in gaming, it is the one I least understand the popularity of. Before you say, "have you played them", I have. I've played 1, 2, ALTTP, OoT, and Twilight Princess. I've tried to like the series. But every time I play, I'm so bored. Running around poking grass, jars, and chickens with my sword isn't fun. Never ending dungeons that look the same aren't fun. The generic story isn't fun. I just...don't get it. I've tried, more than I have for probably any series I'm not interested in or don't like. Elves and high fantasy stuff aren't cool. Definitely not fun in game form. Someone please explain to me what I'm missing. Or why you also don't like the series.
So I take it you're a HUGE Lord of the Rings fan.

You haven't played Wind Waker though. And I mean Wind Waker HD, not the old version. It's basically the best artstyle and the best world design of any Legend of Zelda game. 😉

people who post this image should be straight up banned. it adds fucking nothing to the discussion

OT: only zelda i liked was ocarina of time

Honestly the pic straight up pisses me off.

OP, everytime I try and play a Zelda game I'm not pulled in. ALBW and Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword? I've tried them all and I just don't like it. Wind Waker looks awesome though and the new Zelda looks great, an I will buy both of those when I get a WiiU regardless on me not liking the series. I think, and this sounds soooo dumb, but I think it's the art style......but anywho, yeah same boat as you OP regardless of the 2 game I said looked awesome.

dungeons are the best part. If you didn't like twilight dungeons, then idk maybe 3d games aren't for you

Wind Waker has the worst dungeons and that's why i don't like that game

I like Zelda, but I have to admit it is one of the most overrated series in existence. It is good, but not THAT good.

At this point, I think the comic would have more meaning directed at people overreacting to someone expressing dislike for something. Be like that angel: accept the opinion, and move on.

Going to test this theory...

but then... what do you like exactly??

oh nevermind, don't answer that question. it's blatantly obvious, silly me even asking...

Zelda is very special to me, its one of the very first games I played with a obsession to finish. The puzzles, story, music, dungeons, bosses, everything just works so well, there is no game like it. I love getting lost exploring a dungeon, not knowing what's behind that locked door, if it will be a sub boss or just a compass...
But I think its a really divisive series, as the Oracle games are my favorites, I really found TWW lukewarm by comparison, mostly because of the lame dungeons xP

For those of you who actually haven taken the time to explain why you like the series, thank you. Explaining why you like it instead of "omg you don't like zelda you monster" kind of shit is helpful and what I wanted.

I see a lot of people telling you it's okay not to like a series/it might not be your cup of tea. Very little "You are bad and you should feel bad" kind of posts.

I don't like the Zelda games at all, but Minish Cap was an exception for me. Maybe you should check that one out? Really charming game that doesn't take itself as seriously as some of the other titles do.

It doesn't matter that you don't like it. I'm sure you aren't the only one. People like different things.

I would only question you if you called them bad games, because they are obviously well made and inventive.

Eh. That pic does get a used but here it's totally appropriate.

The "discussion" is literally just the OP saying he doesn't like Zelda.

Minor really any room for anything other than people saying hey like or dislike it..

I dislike hundreds of popular games. Should I make a thread for them all? No because really, what does it add to neogaf? Nothing.

Sometimes I like Zelda.. But usually, I have a mild distaste for it.

OP is right about the generic story. It's bugged me ever since Ocarina of Time. Just feels so cliche.. Oooh noo,.. Looks like the evil man is capturing the princess.. He's so evil! Also, blah blah foretold hero legend blah blah.. It's really lame. I also have an issue with how the world is big and yet feels so small at the same time.. This is all compounded by the story and characters being more or less the same every single game.

There's also a dopey sort of reverence about the series that makes me want to wretch.

On the other hand, Wind Waker was amazing.. but I couldn't drag myself through Twilight Princess or anything else since.

Not that I can take Dynasty Warriors at all seriously, but it might be the most fresh take on Zelda the series really needed. I hope they really rock the boat with the next Zelda game.

How is this a discussion though.

Dude says shit looks the same when it clearly doesn't if you actually look at it for a second. Might as well say all games are the same because you see pixels and press buttons.

OP definitely doesn't like thing. The video game landscape is so diverse these days, I don't see how not liking Zelda a problem. Just play something else. There is a bunch of popular games I can't stand either but I find it easy enough to entertain myself with stuff I enjoy.

It's just not your thing. That's totally fine. Zelda's one of my favourite series ever, but I don't like stuff like Pikmin, Fallout etc. It's fine not to like stuff.

I'd reckon the people saying "You're not a REAL gamer!" are just joking. I know joke about it all the time when someone says they haven't played or don't like Zelda. 's all a bit of fun.

I reached that conclusion because they aren't cool to me. And as a result, they aren't fun in game form, either.

This really does make me question why you ever thought you would like the Zelda series in the first place. Yeh you can say 'people bang on about them, I wanted to see what the fuss was' but come on dude! you bought and played like 5 games in a series that centers entirely around the very stuff you are definitively saying are 'not cool and i don't like them'

I just don't even

The vast majority of posts on GAF add nothing to the site. Should people stop posting then?

I don't see the problem with the thread and yes, I think that picture is pointless and add nothing to the discussion.

Good sense of exploration, amazing level design, epic and rememorable boss fights, usually a good story with likable characters, feels like you are constantly progressing.

This image is overused and frankly dumb to post in a place where the entire point of the site is for people to voice their opinions.

If your response to a thread is simply OK, it would be better if you didn't post at all, because you're obviously not here for a discussion.

As far as the OP, I'm with you. I've tried multiple Zelda games and they don't interest me. I couldn't get very far in Okami without getting bored either. I like the character and enemy designs in Zelda, but for some reason the series has never clicked with me over any of it's iterations. The closest I got to really enjoying a Zelda game was Minish Cap, and I didn't even end up beating that.

Maybe if you only read the thread title. The actual post is OP wondering if he's missing something about the series that makes every one else love it. Not to mention there can be valuable discussion about why someone might NOT like a series. Not every thread has to be about how great a popular series is. You can also examine what you see as flaws in things that are popular and still have the discussion be worthwhile.

And if you want to get into the "What does it add to NeoGAF" discussion, you could easily say that about 95% of the posts made here at any time. Including the one I'm quoting right now.

There comes a time when a person has to understand taste is truly subjective.

The OP doesn't like Zelda because, among other reasons, they don't like "elves and high fantasy". That's fine. That doesn't mean they're not cool for everyone.

I don't like football at all, period. I also don't like opera and I don't like historical romance. I don't like wasabi, and I don't like monster truck rallies. That doesn't mean there's something wrong with those things, or wrong with my understanding of them. I know what they are, I've tried them all, turns out I'm not built to be turned on by them.

Sometimes a person has to accept that something isn't for them, and there's no mystery to be solved as to why it isn't.

And what exactly added your comment? Just saying.

Anyway, I don't like GTA games and yet I tried to play most of them. I even completed the first GTA III and played through most of Vice City. I find the "open world" stuff boring, I need to have a mission so outside of the main story I usually don't like going around wrecking havoc.
I'll buy GTAV on PC XD

But I'm ok with OP not liking Zelda, even if it's my most loved series and the main reason I buy Nintendo hardware. It's not like it's a personal offense.
You just need to be more open-minded. Do you feel offended if someone doesn't like a series you love instead?

The people in Hyrule have only one difference from humans - their ears. So they maybe elves, but they're not LOTR elves where they're a powerful, immortal race or anything, nor are they the miniature type like say, Dobby from Harry Potter. They're just humans with sharp ears, is all, so why their race should affect your enjoyment of any of the games is beyond me.

As for dungeons, they're the meat of every Zelda game, filled with puzzles and danger and requiring that you think your way through them. If you don't like dungeons, then perhaps the Zelda series is just not for you. And that's alright, as people have said. Not every game will be loved by everyone, no matter how awesome they are.

By the by, which dungeons look alike?!

As for me, Zelda is the biggest reason I have had a Nintendo console sitting beside my pc since all the way back to the N64. I first encountered it when my friend got a SNES. The mood was set as Link trudged through the rain and found his dying uncle, and took the sword and shield he'd need to help the princess. The detailed graphics and the amazing sound coming out of the SNES set an amazing atmosphere and made me feel like I was part of an epic story, and about to start a great quest.

Because of Link's almost non-personality, it felt like I was traipsing across the map and doing all these incredible things. Finding the mythical Master Sword in the Lost Woods, uncovering the entrances to dank, underground dungeons and going through them slowly and cautiously, battling the dark wizard Agahnim before a final, epic showdown with Ganon. After we finished that game, we had the long wait before us until the next Zelda game arrived. True, there was Link's Awakening, but for some reason I never played that to completion - probably because I didn't have a Gameboy of my own.

Four long years came between the release of A Link to the Past and the announcement of the N64 and a new Zelda game. We salivated at the early shots of a 3D Link fighting a metallic foe, and waited. We both bought N64's, played Super Mario 64 and others, and we wondered what the new Zelda game would be like. For another three long damn years we waited. Screenshots started trickling out, captivating us with the possibilities, and then turned into a flood, and we pored over every magazine that gave the game any kind of coverage. Three long years of staring at screenshots, a full seven years after A Link to the Past, and finally, Link's new adventure - our new adventure - had come.

I couldn't make it to the midnight opening the local Game store had in the nearest city to me, because the last train down was at eleven pm, but I went up first thing in the morning to find Zelda's title screen playing on this immense 50" tv screen (remember this was 1998) inside the store. That beautiful music playing as Link rode across the gently sloping hills of Hyrule, the stunning change of the sky from blue to orange as the day passed... I went up the counter and bought their very last copy, and then I rushed home to play it. A thought popped up in the back of my mind as I rode the train home - what if all this anticipation had done nothing but damage to my experience of the game? It couldn't possibly be as good as my imagination suggested it could be after all this time, could it? And I was right. As I slammed the cartridge into my N64 in fevered excitement, and started to play, I realised that the game wasn't what I thought it would be.

It was more. As Link, I left Kokiri Forest and was awestruck by what I found - a game world that felt huge where, for the first time, if I saw something in the distance, I could actually get to it. It felt like a completely open world, a new experience back in 1998. I met up with Princess Zelda, and promised to help her against the rising evil of Ganondorf. I fought my way through two more dungeons, got the remaining two Spiritual Stones, and rushed back to Hyrule Castle in order to meet with her... only to find her fleeing the castle and town, with Ganondorf in hot pursuit. After opening the Temple of Time and finding at last the Master Sword, Link travelled seven years forward in time (coincidental that it was seven long years we waited for a new Zelda game) and the game really began to shine.

I fought a dragon on Death Mountain, crept carefully around the Gerudo Fortress in the sort of stealth gameplay that could have been a game all of it's own (MGS was that game, you could say), braved the desert only to be surprised by the exterior of the Spirit Temple, travelled back and forward in time, the landscape changing from gloomy desolated to a bright, living world as I did so, and I felt bad for all these people that I spoke to as a child, knowing they'd either die or be displaced by the terrible goings on after the disappearance of the princess. It was a fairly lonely adventure despite Navi accompanying me - it felt strangely melancholic seeing the Kokiri friends of your youth peering at you and saying, "There's something familiar about you, mister".

I fought my way through the game, all the way up to Ganon's Tower where I faced Ganondorf and defeated him, escorted Zelda down through the collapsing structure, thinking it all over until Ganondorf emerged from the debris and turned into his true form, a pig-like creature of gargantuan porportions and wielding two swords that were about as long as Link was tall. The battle was joined once more and it was truly epic, and as Link finally plunged his word through Ganon's head, it felt like I had done it, that I had participated in this amazing, wild adventure. Nintendo had done it again, and that was it for me - Ocarina of Time became my favourite game ever, and I would buy whatever I would need to in order to play through the next adventure. From N64 to Wii U, I've played as Link, and now I wait for the next game with almost the same anticipation I had for Ocarina.

That's why I love the series. The combat is always excellent, the puzzles always infuriating, the story always epic and the characters always memorable and endearing. I'm always guaranteed a quality game, an epic journey of adventure.

That's the kind of post I was looking for. Makes sense.

So I take it you're a HUGE Lord of the Rings fan.

It's my fav. I do a marathon of the extended versions at least once a year.

You don't have to like Zelda. Just like whatever you want to like. A few stupid people will care and try to change your opinion, but most people will just say "ok."

But come on. Don't lie to make your point. That's obnoxious and kind of insulting.

The dungeons are not never-ending (they actually have pretty simple to understand pacing and progression), and they obvious don't all look the same. Outside of the early games which were on very limited hardware, there's tons of variety in the dungeons. I'd post pictures, but I honestly don't need to.

Don't boil the games down to "running around poking chickens" while neglecting to comment on what the games are actually about. What about all those times you run around fighting monsters with your sword, or shooting the bow, or solving puzzles, or the many other things you do in the game?

And you can understand why people like it, even if you say you can't. You have a character that goes on an adventure with weapons and other gadgets to fight monsters and bad guys and explore unknown places. People like that and you know it. Hell, you like it to. You just prefer it in a different setting (Super Metroid and the Batman: Arkham games).

So if you want people to thoughtfully explain why they like it (even though you don't need them to because you like similar things), then you need to take the time to thoughtfully explain why you don't like it, rather than just posting a few untrue "examples" and saying "fantasy is lame".

That's the kind of post I was looking for. Makes sense.

To add further clarification, A Link to the Past did storytelling, atmosphere and music unlike any other game I'd played before. At the time I had a C64, and while I had played games with great storytelling, like the AD&D title Champions of Krynn, or Rainbird's adventures The Guild of Thieves and Jinxter, and had also played similar action rpg's, such as Times of Lore, I had never come across so complete and polished a package before as Zelda.

That feeling of my going on an epic journey, of going through that struggle, never stopped. With each new Zelda game, it starts again. Every time I hear the main theme I get a shiver of thrill down my back. Hell, each time I hear any Zelda jingle, a rush of memories come back to me. The genius of Koji Kondo is, like so many C64 musicians I could name, he worked within the limitations of the eight and sixteen bit machines to create some of the most memorable tunes in gaming.

I could go on for hours about why I love Zelda, but I think I've covered the important bits :)

I really disagree with you. When a thread is posted for nothing but attention seeking and asking people to validate a negative opinion, the comic is wholly appropriate. "ok" should be the only post in this thread. Good for you, you don't like Zelda. ok. I don't like God of War, Call of Duty, or any car racing game. ok. I don't go posting threads asking for validation.

Before you say, "have you played them", I have. I've played 1, 2, ALTTP, OoT, and Twilight Princess. I've tried to like the series. But every time I play, I'm so bored. I think the question here isn't so much "how many zelda games have you played?" as much as it is "how far have you played any of those zelda games?".

Because if thats your takeaway of the series, it sounds a lot like "gave up playing during the tutorial area"

I grew up on LOZ from the first one on NES. The pinnacle was ALTTP.

During the 3D era they have become increasingly stale retreads.

I have high hopes for the upcoming one, though, sounds like they're ready to make changes.

Your own post didn't add anything to the discussion either. The pic is fine. Gets a good laugh outta me and conveys the point that people are gonna have opinions, and others aren't gonna care either way.

Can we all stop hounding the guy for posting a perfectly OK pic to use? There's a difference between trash posting/spam posting and posting with a single picture. "Different strokes for different folks" is what he wanted to say, and the picture helped his point. Weird how you guys jump on him like that.

OP, LoZ is extremely boring to me. Probably my least favorite Nintendo IP to be quite honest. I don't even like the character designs for the most part. Ganondorf's story (according to Wind Waker) was just about the only thing that intrigued me. Everything else feels extremely generic where the story is concerned.

The gameplay...just not my cup of tea. It's a bit too slow for me. I think the series has pacing issues as a whole. Takes too long to pick up and get things going.

I've played OoT, WW, ALBW.
