The Lion's Song are the most interesting 5 minutes I had with a game in the longest time.

Excellent short form writing.

My Let's Play of Elliot Quest is up. You can find it here:

http://youtu.be/c5I0gRBZNTM

Quick Impressions:

It's a love letter to The Legend of Zelda 2: Link's Adventure
  • There is an armored guard that has a very similar style but thankfully not similar attack pattern.
  • A kid is missing a cat named "Link"
  • There are two sections of the game. Side Scrolling and Overworld traversal (where you can get interrupted by baddies)
  • Towns and dialogue with NPCs are similar to Zelda 2

Good stuff:

Initial weapon you're equipped with is a bow and arrow (not sure if you get other weapons, but it looks like I have seven more slots left and the other is filled with a candle.)

There are lots and lots of nods and winks towards NES' styling (Megaman-type enemies and bit of Castlevania platforming)

Overall, platforming/action mechanics are solid. Exploration is excellent. Levels and areas locked off by items (I.E. Metroid/Zelda style)

Map system is very helpful and is probably the furthest the game goes in holding your hand. The game can be slightly challenging. Thankfully checkpoints aren't too far apart.

Bad Stuff:

You can skip cutscenes entirely, but you can't accelerate them. If you can read 10 words in two seconds be prepared to wait another eight seconds. Not sure if it's a translation thing, but some of the wording gives a different tone (YMMV).

Bottom Line: Very charming and appropriately difficult.

Pre-orders are up. $20 is a bit steep for one level:

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
But it's not for one level? You are pre-ordering the game too...

Yeah, but considering what you get for your money NOW is still a valid train of thought. Curious why that game is supposed to be worth the 20$ though, why are you interested in it?

Bottom Line: Very charming and appropriately difficult.

Good bottom line, its a really lovely game. That makes me think again how many great Indies I'd never have played if it werent for this thread.

Return of the Obra Dinn - The visual of the game is astonishing, and while there isn't too much yet to see in game I can say it's going to be a good game at least, you can notice how Lucas Pope gives an attention to little details in his games.

Same.

I wouldn't get too attached, the way that KS is going I can't see it making it outside some kind of robot miracle.

That is such a niche of a niche, that I dont even understand how anything can hope that this might get funded with fan money alone. If someone like Cliffy B throws in 10,000 and makes some ads... maaaaybe, but otherwise there is no way they would get almost 100,000 for a rigid 4 player (no 3,2 or 1) coop game about maneuvering a giant robot.

Wait, you haven't been following Mushroom 11? Every site and person that's played has given it rave highly positive impressions, plus the art style and unique mechanic/gameplay.

I've been waiting for preorders to become available for a while now. Here's 14 minutes of gameplay from EGX, shows off the first level as well

No one in this thread talked about it, which is most of my universe with Indie Games =p
I dont have time to follow more dev logs and update sites, so its your fault for not educating us earlier! ;P

Actually you said the same thing back in April ;p

I had searched to see if I needed to make a formatted post for it or not. Weird, the game had been mentioned before in quite a few threads, but no one had ever made a proper post for it

Taking care of gooey things in a slower, more methodical puzzle environment can be really frustrating. This usually gets worse once action/platforming elements are introduced. I hope the Mushroom 11 team were aware of this.

Well from everything I've read, people seem to agree that they nailed the controls and gameplay. (And I'll most likely end up preordering so I'll post my impressions if I do)

But watching the gameplay, it's not exactly a gooey or soft blob. Actually it stays in a rigid shape, and only changes in relation to your action.

I've actually heard from a few sources that the controls feel more like chiseling a block rather then moving a watery substance given the ridged nature of the main character when you are not directly effecting it. Although I can't say anything more then that, but I'll try to give some impressions once the playable preview becomes available.

I see, that's fine then. Nonetheless, I agree with Toma that touch controls would probably make for a better experience.

I've never really been able to get really into Isaac primarily due to the lack of directional shooting gives the gameplay a slightly primitive feel. Although I really appreciate the unsettling visuals and it seems to do right with the entire action roguelike concept, it's just not for me. Last weekend me and a friend had a go on the co-op mode in that game and it is not a fantastically easy experience but a fairly enjoyable one.

This is what makes it amazing to me. You actually end up having a lot of control over your shots, since the physics allows you to shoot on angles. Once you master that, it's a game changer

Magnetic By Nature - $9.99 (PC, Mac, Linux)

Retro-Pixel Castles - $14.99 (PC, Mac, Linux)

Retro-Pixel Castles is at heart a village simulator. But, where most village simulators focus mostly on balancing your village, RPC also throws in a heavy blend of raw survival and tactical gameplay. If you could imagine a roguelike village sim, that's what this game is all about! In RPC you will lose. Endless survival is impossible, the goal is to see how long you will survive. RPC takes it's inspiration from other village management games like Dwarf Fortress and Banished and mixes them together with elements of survival games like Don't Starve with a sprinkling of some RTS elements seen in games like Command and Conquer there are even some classic Tower Defense concepts to help you bottleneck and handle the onslaught of monsters trying to kill off your poor little villagers.

Untitled 2D Stealth Platformer - ????

http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=44352.0

You play as a thief, infiltrating buildings, avoiding guards and using gadgets to get through areas. Each gadget can be customised using items like timers, sensors, sticky stuff, triggers etc. and new items can be crafted by picking up parts from either enemies or found lying around the levels. The environment is destructable too allowing you to drill or blast your way through walls to get to your goal. Adding these elements together should hopefully result in lots of ways to get through each situation.

Quick Impressions

There is a ton of genius behind this game. To say I was surprised would be an understatement.

Good stuff

This game is brilliant. It actually shows up at the 13 minute mark in my Let's Play, but it's basically the most perfect way to handle tutorials. Essentially, if you fail a few times, the game picks up on this and instructs you with the correct course of action.

It literally felt as if the devs were watching remotely and then came in to lend a helpful hand with alacrity. Seriously, this is how all tutorials should be done.

Brilliant.

The preview feels feature complete (it's just chapter 1) but even a bunch of little details are present. There is this constant heart-beat sound that I mistook for background music, but it's actually synced with the "blood vessels" of the amoebae. Lots of detail.

Lastly, it was kind of mind-blowing how moving the amoebae around quickly became second nature to control. Let me restate this, I apologize for repeating myself but the previous statement felt flat compared to how I felt. The mechanics of Mushroom 11 are perfect. It immediately gestures why it's reacting the way it does which is directly related to the puzzles you must solve. That is, the mechanics of the game and the puzzles are intrinsically linked. Literally after 10 minutes, moving around in Mushroom 11 felt about as mindful as having to walk somewhere.

Bad stuff

There is only one chapter that I could play :(

Bottom Line: An interesting puzzle game that over-delivers yet appears rather humble

I have positive words to say about Mushroom 11 too. I've played through the opening level and the gameplay feels somewhat of a mix up of a fluid dynamic puzzle game and World of Goo with regards to the way you 'shape' your main character to navigate the broken world. I found it really enjoyable and fairly easy to preform quite odd but satisfying movements with the blob after a few minutes of getting used to the way it handled.

I actually found that tutorial slightly annoying. At the beginning of the game I was enjoying a few moments to just get the hang of moving the blob around by myself but it kept interrupting me after a few seconds of not making forward progress to force me to. I don't think it is bad in intention, but in execution I wish it was slightly more optional since I'm more of a 'figure it out myself' kinda guy.

Ah I see. I only had the tutorial show up once for me and literally the second time I died and I thought, "am I doing something wrong?" at that very moment the tutorial jumped in and quickly told me what to do.

I can see from your PoV how it would be overbearing. It was frankly magically serendipitous for me.

This game is so good, I'm still waiting for the remake though so I put it in the same category as Stardew Valley of games that I'm hyped but still have to wait.
