Insane guy remakes Super Mario Bros 3 in the NSMB (ds) engine!

While I think packing all this stuff in the game is useless, it shows something at least:

Nintendo is being the cheapest mutherfuckers in the world for selling us Super Mario Allstars repackaged again for the freaking 25th Anniversary of the most important videogame character in the industry of gaming.

They could, AT THE VERY FUCKING LEAST, remade the original Marios in the new engine like this guy just did. I hope Nintendo is ashamed at least to the point of shutting this guy down.

Is that some wall-jump porn?

I don't really care about the SMB3 stuff (I already played that game like crazy when I was young and it's not like the DS game looks great, plus different physics and moves). But the other levels looks pretty fun and challenging. I hope that the difficulty is wisely tuned, there is a fine line between a challenging level and frustrating mess.

I think this is more impressive and isn't bound by the rules of the originals. It's a fan made game with completely original levels. It's on PC, so he isn't restricted by the rules of the original game and able to blend multiple elements together.
This looks cool!

Saw the trailer. 7:09 - 7:16 gave me bad memories of that one level in OG SMB3's Pipe World where you had to speedrun across the mini-piranhas while star powered. That level was sadistic to my younger self. :lol

Wow that jumped off a cliff pretty hard after he showed all the SMB3 content in two minutes upfront.

Edit: Oh gosh I just got to the quiz part that looks really bad. The SMB3 content looks pretty good, though.

:lol Sick, large mazes

The part starting at 8:38 looks especially tedious. The guy misses one jump, wasting one second, and gets stuck in a place where he can't even suicide. Funny how it's in the damn trailer, and it's even stressed by the person playing doing small jumps to express his frustration.

And that's unfortunate.

I'm not sure what you're seeing?

EDIT: Maybe I misunderstood you. All SMB3 levels are here and more besides. I don't think the titles is misleading at all.

The thread title makes it seem like the game is only a remake of SMB3. That only takes up the first few minutes of the trailer. If the trailer is representative of the final game, then the majority of the game is stuff other than a SMB3 remake. An analogy I could make would be if when Nintendo announced Super Mario Advance, if they had announced it as, "Nintendo Remakes the Original Arcade Mario Bros." They didn't though, because the majority of the game was a remake of SMB2 US.

I don't know what I just saw, but it wasn't SMB3.

I skipped around through the "trailer". Are the Koopa Kids even in?

Almost all of the original levels that are shown look really amateurish. No enemies (except maybe Bullet Bills), mazes, walljump everywhere? No thanks.

At first I was "awesome", then I was kind of "meh"

A SMB3 remake on DS would be pretty sweet. But you need the right power ups.

This.

And as mentioned, some of those levels range from tedious to just insane (or you need to know exactly what to do / where to go at each point)

I didn't see a map in that video?

There was another part of the movie where he missed a timed jump and another button popped up that allowed him to start the sequence over again. I'd be amazed if he didn't give that puzzle the same treatment, even if he didn't show it.

so let me get this straight, it took 1 guy 6 months to complete a remake of an entire super mario game to the point where it matches the other "new super mario" games?

It's a full download?!
I would have thought that he'd just release the patch.
It's just the patch. Lots of resources in there make it a 100+mb download. If you found it with the rom already patched then it's from a different source.

Very interesting :3 Too bad the suits had to be removed due to not being in the engine.

I am still holding my breath with Nintendo for a Mario game along the lines of SMW and SMB 3

Paint-by-numbers is actually not particularly time consuming, creatively speaking anyway.

I know, I just wanted to point out how flawed the gaming market is when people are willing to purchase a game like "new super mario bro's wii" when 1 man is able to make something similar within 6 months for free.

And how much worse it is when those same games get outstandingly high scores for producing something which 1 man is able to make within 6 months.

No wonder the videogame industry has already begun to lose it's creativity and innovation.

Was just thinking someone should do something like this the other day while playing some custom fan made NSMBWii levels.

Weird! While I'd prefer to play on Wii, a DS one is still cool. :D

Super Mario Bros. X looks insane too. :\ Never heard of it before but definitely want to try it now! Don't play many games on PC these days, prefer to console it up as I don't have a nice PC setup going, but that looks worth the effort to try!

There's a level editor for NSMB. He just copied the layouts from previous games. He didn't create new assets, or new power-ups, or anything. I'm not trying to diminish his accomplishment, but what he has done is no where near what it takes to make a full game.

The guy took a mario game then used hacks to make the levels similar to mario 3. If he charged money he would be freaking sued to hell.

Also comparing hacked levels to the quality of a new super mario game? :lol have you even watched the video?

Huh? But it's not similar at all. A 1:1 remake using an existing engine is no comparison to 80+ brand new well designed levels using a brand new engine, graphics, music, 3D models, assets, and functionality (multiplayer etc).

Take the upcoming "NEWER Super Mario Bros. Wii" for instance. Although it's reusing the NSMBW engine, it's being built from the ground up alongside a companion brand new level editor (which is now released separately), and has been in development for over a year with at least 12 people working on it at any one point.

You see, THIS is how Nintendo should be paying homage to Mario on his 25th birthday. Actually remaking classics, or creating new levels. Instead we get a red Wii bundled with Mario Kart or an SNES port of Super Mario All Stars without Super Mario World. And the exclusion of Super Mario World makes even less sense when Miyamoto himself said last week that SMW was the best Mario game of all time! ugh, Mario needs a better birthday than this. Nintendo, I am dissapointed

It looks nice, but I'm also feeling like it's falling for the trap of Mario Fan projects of getting as many features out and ripping sprites from every mario game it forgets to make a solid physics engine. I do like the way it goes in and out of splitscreen if one person gets too far ahead.

Basically, how's the physics engine?

looks ok but the NSMB graphics just dont fit well with Mario 3. When playing Mario 3 the graphics have a certain charm to them :D

Good idea in theory- but you play probably one of the best 2D marios with those graphics and the engine and you realise why modern scrollers will just never live up to the retro days- too smooth and when it isn't smooth its buggy-ness isn't natural its just ew.

AGAIN NO Download LINK YET, tis coming 12 November 2010.

PS: if this is old or illegal to post let me know a mod can close the topic and I'll delete the txt.

If you watch the video, it's not a remake of SMB3. He's just calling it NSMB3 because it's the third NSMB.
