Nope.

TLK
Beauty and the Beast
Fantasia
Pinocchio
Aladdin

Also in the conversation Frozen, Snow White, Bambi, The Jungle Book.

I'm not going to rank anything but I will say Moana was a very enjoyable film. The Rock was great. Hope to see more of these characters in the future.

Haven't seen Moana but the Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Lion King are the 3 which are at the top of my list... feel like what set of Disney movies you you are fond of tells quite a bit about your age.

Have any of you mother fuckers ever seen FANTASIA!?

Jesus Christ. Buncha god damned philistines.

Don't you have to be high as a kite to really enjoy this? I think that disqualifies it.

Not even the best of their recent output.

1. Tangled
2. Frozen
3. Moana
4. Big Hero 6

Haven't seen Zootopia yet.

Am I the only one who really loved The Fox and the Hound as a kid?

I only saw it recently, but really liked it. Good music, good humour, great characters, and obviously amazing animation. Will probably require a good year or more to decide where it belongs in terms of Disney's best output though.

If it is older than Star Wars and not Citizen Kane, 2001, Apes or a Hitchcock movie, the chance is slim to none that people watched it.

Let's be real, chances are slim that they've seen any of those things outside Star Wars, and even then just the Special Editions.

I like you. If I take into account ALL Disney movies, drawn and CG, my top five are:

1 - The Lion King
2 - Alice
3 - Toy Story 3
4 - Monsters Inc
4 - Aladdin

You have good taste,

I would go

1. Alice
2. The Sword in the Stone
3. Robin Hood
4. Peter Pan
5. hmmm...Now it get's difficult...

It's one of the few Disney movies I didn't watch, but whenever I read about it people always seem to say it's great when high, like if you're not high don't bother.

Yeah, Disney was really pandering to the stoner crowd back in 1940.

Just watch the movie, it's on Netflix. It's one of the greatest animated works of all time, one of the greatest accomplishments in all of filmmaking. It nearly bankrupted the studio. It's a masterpiece of craftsmanship.

Fun fact: the final shot of the movie is a continuous 200ft-long (IRL) multiplane panning shot that had to be filmed 3 times.

If we're going by that, Disney has done way better.

Mulan
Aladdin
Lilo and Stitch
The Princess and the Frog

Moana is 5th, tied with Pocahontas which has its own problems.

Yeah although going purely by enjoyment factor I would probably rank Moana above The Princess and the Frog which I thought was very boring. Don't care for Pocohantas either.

My favorite Disney movies are Aladdin and the Lion King which kind of come with their own problems too. I think Moana has done the best when it comes to representation and not shoehorning a romance in though, but I wouldn't try to put it up with Disney's best with respect to entertainment factor.

That Pocohantas article you linked is interesting though. I knew about all the baggage it came with but the part where people are talking about Jasmine, Belle and Arielle being strong female characters was interesting. I never thought of them that way but maybe they're better characters than I thought.

I watched it last sunday (and in 3D). It's ok and thre protagonist is pretty decent in not being a damsel in distress, but overall it was pretty mild and below Frozen or Tangled. Oddly enough, when Maui starts with the first song I imagined he would be a Genie expy for the rest of the movies.

And speaking of that, Way. Too. Many. Songs. I thought I had finally gotten over my hate of that since I have no issues with most Disney movies, but these ones feel so out of place (like the coconuts) that it borders Big Lipped Alligator Moment.

It's not even the best animated movie they released in 2016. Not that I didn't like it (I did), but it's far from the best.

The plot was a little weird.. Like it knew it was shallow and odd, but just went full emotional with it anyway. Like, does her family even know anything about her adventure? I dunno.. I liked it more than I thought I would, for sure.

I liked the lobster.

Best animated film as in, animation? Or film that just happens to be animated?

Because in terms of animation, they are at the top of the class for the time being. The water, and more importantly, the hair are fantastic.

As far as a film is concerned though? I love the mythical references, the story and the music is fantastic - but I feel that Alice and Lion King were superior.

With the exception of one poorly placed Twitter joke, I feel that this movie is an absolute masterpiece. It hits all the right notes at all the right times. The music is already iconic and I've been listening to the soundtrack every day with my daughter since we saw it last week.

The CG, particularly the water, is second-to-none. As are the character designs, which have a unique art style but retain a realism and relatability. We aren't looking at models and barbie dolls in this film.

The main character of Moana is perfectly modeled, from her personality and independence to her likability and actual body shape. She isn't without her flaws and learns and grows from them throughout the film. Her grandmother was a perfect addition and worked magnificently as a kind of a spiritual and emotional guide throughout the film.

I also love how bold it is from a storytelling perspective. Leaving Moana to become the leader and hero she was destined to be without having to resort to a forced love interest or a romantic subplot was an inspired move. Even the whole concept of the story itself, which doesn't feature a single Caucasian character and features songs that aren't sung in English, is (unfortunately) a very bold move in this cultural climate.

Lastly, the themes of the film, which touch on overcoming your fears and not being afraid to experience life, even when there's risk involved, as well as touching on the idea that your possessions are not your identity, and that your self worth is much more substantial than anything you can own, are very positive and poignant themes that I'm happy to subject my young daughter to.

Overall, this is most likely my favorite Disney film. When I think back and compare it to Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, etc... It holds the fuck up. This is destined to be a classic in my eyes.

Thoughts, GAF? Am I crazy or is this film one of the all-time Disney greats?

Watching this with my daughters over and over does not annoy me with this film like zootopia or minions. You have good points on the theme of this movie and i really think this is a great movie. The ocean animation, the music and that ending scene with moana singing to te-kah - still keeps my attention to this day.

I really like how the animators make the realm of the monsters legit like a place where scariness lives. Would be interesting to see a 2nd movie of moana where she has to travel into the realm of the monsters for something of a plot - maybe the kidnapping of her villages children or something Disney crazy. I also really enjoyed the Coconut pirates haha.

I'm with you OP, at this moment, it is a very enjoyable film that gets played often and does not annoying me or others in the house.

I mean, I loved Moana, but let's give it some time before we say it's the best they've ever made.

But it's definitely top tier Disney. Successful beyond my highest expectations.

remember when the character moana was first introduced. and some guy on here was like id make moana moan?

Which is funny in hindsight because Moana was renamed Vaiana around Europe because of some italian porn star which goes by the name Moana, or something like that.

Vaiana sounds like a hygiene product for ladies though...

not even close, its not the best film at all. The song is very irritating and they should of made the pig the sidekick not the chicken imo

I feel like they intentionally made people think the pig is going to be the sidekick and fooled people especially when the chicken was revealed to be under the bowl. Thought itvwas really clever. The pig would have just been the typical cute animal buddy, its been done a thousand times.

Don't know what you mean by "irritating song" though.

I grew up on your top 3 and love them. But I still feel like they don't hold up too well today. I have watched them all rather recently. Especially the humour in some of these can be pretty awful by todays standard.

Personally, if I ignore my nostalgia, I think movies like Zootopia, Tangled and Moana truly are as excellent as the old classics have been in their time. Add some Pixar classic like Wall-e, Inside Out or Toy Story 3 and I think the CG era might have already surpassed the heights of the classic animated era.

Now that its been a few months I can say its definitely one of the best films, easily in my top 5.

As someone who watches (forced to watch) the majority of the Disney films on a regular basis, this one stands out as being decidedly not-terrible.

It probably has my favorite songs out of the Disney Princess movies. The build-up to the final song combining the previous ones is very emotional. The movie feels a tad unfocused however, and scenes like the pirates felt like useless filler more than anything. I'd rank it on the same level as Tangled overall.

Seeing it Tuesday, I'll hand down my decree then.

I can't wait though, it certainly looks promising as hell, and I'm a big fan of Lin.

Zootopia is a top-tier Disney movie for me, of any era, so I'm certainly open to the idea of it being up there.
Zootopia is in my top 3.

Aladdin, beauty and the beast, Zootopia for reference.

Yeah I'd agree OP, out of all Disney animated films I've seen Moana has been the best imo

Edit: Zootopia though is close

As I left the theater after seeing it the first time, I certainly felt it could be. The feeling stuck after a second viewing. I've dimmed just a tad on it since. I'd still say it's among Disney's best, but I found a handful of other films even better. From "I Am Moana" on is up there with anything though. Just a fantastic last act.

Animation-wise this film is up there with Disney's best. But when it comes to characters, story, and music it doesn't beat Frozen nor Tangled even.

Seems like this movie gets more love from certain groups because it skirts the traditional Disney princess tropes, than anything else.

While I found Moana entertaining enough, I enjoyed Inside Out, Zootopia, and Frozen far more. I really didn't care for Maui at all. Found him annoying. My daughter liked Moana, but is not in any hurry to watch it again.

Moana did look great, though.

The recent bias is pretty strong here.

Moana looks good and has some fun songs, but it's passable at best.

Apparently Disney never made a good movie before 1989.

Isn't that Disney's fault? Didn't their vault system prevent people from owning the classics til they were re-released.

I don't know, I remember owning VHS tapes of Aladdin and Lion King but I'm sure I saw Pinocchio and Dumbo but it must have been via Blockbuster

If we are going by the first 20 min of the film, I'd say it's an absolute contender with the best Disney has to offer.

The songs are really fantastic (with a couple exceptions) and the themes are brilliantly simplistic.

But some of the movie sags. The lobster felt like it belonged in another movie and the villain/wrap up was a little to shallow for my taste. Dwayne Johnson was kinda basic in it.

But the night scene out in the ocean was classic. The young lead was very impressive.

It's highs aren't super consistent with the film as a whole imo. But it's pretty great for what it is.

That's the problem, Disney's been bad for so long the moment they put out a string of competent films they are suddenly back to making classics.

This Frozen-Moana era doesn't really even compete to that late 90's era of Hercules, Hunchback, Mulan.

All these recent films including Zootopia feel half baked. There's great moments in the films but they rushed it out the door instead of taking the time to perfect the film. Which is sad because I want to like these as much as the classics but their flaws stand out too much.
