Is the "R-slur" becoming more accepted in Trump's America?

People say it all the time, even black eyed peas.

Retard as a transitive verb isn't really even offensive, and I think it's often used in a context that actually isn't even referencing someone with a disability.

Retard was removed as a medical term a few years ago so it shouldnt really be all that offensive anymore. The same thing happened with dumb and stupid.
I realize these things take a few years though so I can see how it can still be insulting.
I think it's intellectual disability correct?

Come on, the word has been becoming far less acceptable over the years. You can't just say it willy nilly and not end up raising a few eyebrows in certain crowds.

It's a bit much honestly. I get that it's an offensive term, but it really doesn't bother me when I hear other people saying it. Most people don't use it as a way to insult other people, but more of a way to call out lame or stupid ideas.

The overuse of the "bitch" word strikes me as a far more offensive. People these days just casually throw that word around like it means nothing.

I don't think this is anything to blame Trump for. Retarded is super commonly used and has been for as long as I can remember, so at the very least a few decades.

I haven't seen its use expand any since Trump's election.

You usually hear intellectually delayed or intellectual disability.

If we're being honest the vast majority of medical professionals still use "MR" as common parlance, despite the fact that 'mental retardation' is not the medically correct term anymore.

The very word is referring entirely to a specific group of marginalized people. You can't just say it doesn't mean that.

Perhaps, though I've never heard that in a single meeting with multiple doctors, specialists, or educational therapists.

It's always intellectually delayed.

Yeah I can, because the meaning of the word isn't about a group of people:

M-w

Definition of retard
transitive verb
: to slow up especially by preventing or hindering advance or accomplishment : impede

It entirely depends on how it's used, for example, the song, is using it as a verb, not a noun.

People used gay to call out lame and stupid things as well. It matters.

The threads with people wanting to cling to that were something to see.

Sounds like you may be working in circles that deal more directly with that population, so that would make sense.

If you just listen in on a hospitalist and a consultant in a hospital you will usually hear them say "22 year old male, history of MR" etc.

u really using 'lame' that way eh

You could literally say the same thing about the word gay and how it was used. When people were using that term it didn't literally mean everything it was used about was gay. Its still very insulting to gay people.

The meaning of words can change. Idiot used to mean the same thing

I'm not arguing whether it has or hasn't in this case, but the argument isn't as cut and dry as seem to think

Please...you know what it means. This is like the people who say fag is just a kindling of wood. Willfully obtuse.

Admittedly I still use it. I would never call someone a retard but I definitely say that ideas are retarded. I really don't associate it with a medical condition. For me it's a synonym for stupid.

Its still insulting here and now to a lot of people. Whats your point?

If you don't understand my point, you need to read my comment again. There are lots of words that can be offensive to people for any number of reasons; that alone in and of itself isn't a compelling argument against all of them

Retarded has made a comeback in the lexicon of people and it's weird, like 10 years ago people were like, "Maybe don't say that?" and now it's not okay exactly, but like, you ain't gonna be called out so quickly

Not really. It's the first fucking definition of the word in the dictionary and has an actual use in sentences:

Definition of retard for Students
retarded; retarding
: to slow down : delay Bad weather retarded our progress.

Merrimack Webster should probably change some things up if this is how they instructing students if it's so offensive.

You can use the word with the proper context without it being offensive.

If you are using at as a noun to describe a person, yeah it's offensive, as merriam points out.

Well feel free to start dropping those racial slurs because not everyone finds them offensive.

That words change meaning all the time?

I'm guessing we can't use idiot, moron, dumb because there are people who are actually born that way and it's offensive to them if we use them so casually.

People use "autistic" instead of retard now. Am I the only one that's noticed this? Like "I'm not autistic" / "your autistic". It's fucking awful

The dictionary also says ketchup is spicy. When's the last time you heard someone say "bad weather retarded our progress" or any variant of that usage?

Yeah, because that's exactly what I said.

See, this person gets it. Why don't you?

Because I'm not talking about a few decades ago or into the future. Here and now the word still holds a very ugly connotation to a lot of people for fairly obvious reasons.

There was a major publicity campaign ("The R-Word") back in 2009 against use of the word that dramatically reduced general usage. I don't think that organization has been as active since then.

I feel like use of it has declined in recent years, or had. I don't know that I've seen any more of it post-Trump, but anything's possible.

My wife works with intellectually disabled adults, so it doesn't see any use here, and my kids haven mentioned it definitely being a word they understand as a word you don't say.

I don't know about other regions, but it is still heavily used in the Montreal area.

Plentifully used towards other dirvers, pederstrians and cyclists

Let's get retarded in here
Oh, a BOP!

I know a guy who made an effort to remove it from his lexicon. He uses it now, years later.

Would like it to go away, but then again as someone mentioned there are a variety of autism-related words that are now "in fashion." There will always be something to replace how horrible we speak to each other.

And I've definitely seen people meme-post "*autistic screeching*" around here before. An inventive word pairing I'll give the original creators that, but intolerant and clearly in poor taste.
