"You know, the -- the boy is named Bart. I don't know the name of the man. Bar! What's the name of the man?"

Gets me every time and I can't explain why.

Edit: I just wanted to agree with above; celebrity guests in an animated show 99% of the time turn that episode into an all time worst.
Celebrity guest voices are alright... as long as they're guest voices.

When the celebrity plays him or herself, or they make a big fuss about the voice and make it a critical part of the episode, it turns to shit.

But then there's the exceptions... like Spock in the monorail episode.

Most of the time even the guest voices are bad, but there's quite a few notable exceptions. Probably from classic Simpsons episodes like someone else said. :lol Albert Brooks and Dustin Hoffman come to mind

But what I largely meant was when they played themselves. It just drives me nuts. Futurama does this fucking constantly.

And let's not forget the Michael Jackson episode.

I don't really need a tag, but I figured I'd get one to make people jealous. Is it working?
I watched one of the new episodes recently, first time in a long time. And the conclusion I came to was that if I had never seen or heard of the Simpsons before, I'd probably think it was pretty okay. But, it's sort of like all of their new episodes are a grab bag of things they've done before. They pick a handful of Simpsons specific TV tropes and remix them into a "new" episode. It just feels stale.

Where are you guys finding these images at?
I googled simpsons and all I seem to find is fanporn and videogame screenshots.
I dl'ed them all off a simpsons website some time ago. don't remember which one though, and yeah most are pretty terrible for screens

One of the problems with celebrity appearances is that, in general, celebrities just can't voice act.

Put them in front of the camera, and they can act. Put them in a band, and they can play. Put them in a dark studio and have them stand there speaking lines into a mic, and their charisma (if its there to begin with) just evaporates. The effect is tenfold when they have to portray themselves. It's not helped by the fact that they're usually drawn standing still with their arms by their sides.

I don't know if this is a case of visual charisma, but they sure don't do this anymore!
They make fun of this weird head turning animation in the early season DVD commentaries. They stopped doing it around season 4. It definitely was just a bit too weird and unnatural.

The animation in seasons 5 and 6 is just absolutely top notch. The little things make me smile, like how Homer's eyes got bigger but his pupil got smaller (or they rattled) whenever he screamed like a girl. I also think things like Homer beating down the giant dragonfly in the time travel Halloween episode would fall flat with the new dead animation style.

If you guys want this thread every day, subscribe to the RSS feed at http://eyeonspringfield.tumblr.com. They post screenshots (and sometimes audio or video) of the Simpsons, but only from the good seasons (1-8). It's always good memories of when it used to be the best show on TV, rather than one of the worst.

this thead is making me cry. so many great memories.

that's what i mean when i say that watching the simpsons is comfort television. i just sit down, pop in a random disc from sets 1-8, and i am rendered incapable of feeling bad.
