His Wii game might not be ready yet, but he still needs to hide away from the 360/PS3 crowd for a while.

What were the numbers for GC launch?
I see first week has been brought up, but I'll paste GCN's launch until year end (and 6 days beyond). It really did have a slow launch. More like everything before SSBM was a preview to the real launch.

Wii should definitely get off to a greater start, but directly comparing time of year it should take a bit to catch up.

If what he posted was the first week of sales then it was only 2 days.
I'm pretty sure it was a September 14 launch, so there'd be 3 days counted.

Now those are some shitty sales. I doubt it was supply constrained too.

So it didn't even break 400K until SSBM was out, which was the GC's biggest game ever. The scary part is that we can expect SSBB to be somewhat analogous to SSBM and perhaps even what Nintendogs was to the DS in Japan.

It might be because the GC launch was on 09-14-2001

Maybe, but I highly doubt those events really did too much over in Japan. I remember there was a big debate about it back when GameFAQs was pretty decent (2001) and really, no one could prove 9/11 screwed the GC over.

All signs look good for Nintendo so far. I really think they hit it big not only with their innovative approach to this gen of consoles but also with their price point. At the least I hope that we get some pretty good competition out of those generation and get to see some great games coming out. I haven't bought one yet but I definately will have one before the year ends.

Isn't the cashier in the middle the one we always see for the other system launches?

It's good to hear that there's a lot of stuff happening for the Wii, hopefully Nintendo can compete with Sony. Wii Play and Wario Ware impressions ASAP please!

Nintendo's Wii Console Sells Out at Tokyo Retailers on 1st Day

By Masaki Kondo

Dec. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Nintendo Co.'s Wii video-game console sold out at some Japanese electronics retailers today, competing with Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360...

...Nintendo, based in Kyoto, said it delivered 400,000 Wii consoles to retailers in Japan for the opening day and has produced 1 million units to replenish stores, such as Yodobashi, that sell out of the game...

..."But joining the line like this is part of fun," said Ito, one of about 2,000 people in a queue besieging electronic retailer Bic Camera Inc.'s flagship shop in central Tokyo...

...Before the official store opening, its inventory of about 3,000 units had already been committed to around 1,000 customers who placed pre-orders and the other 2,000 in the queue...

Nintendo's Wii game console debuts in Japan

...On a quest to regain its former industry dominance, the video game pioneer stocked retailers with about 400,000 units of the new console, which flew off the shelves as people rushed to buy after queuing overnight...

..."Sony spends a lot of money for good graphics. But it's always Nintendo that comes up with new ideas," said Kentaro Watanabe, a 19-year-old university student who demonstrated his keenness by coming dressed as a remote control and said he had been determined to wait all night.

"I made this (costume) by myself yesterday. This is an homage to Nintendo," he added...

...But some customers were disappointed. Shortly after midnight, some 1,200 people -- more than the number of consoles on sale -- were already lined up outside the Bic Camera electronics store, a spokeswoman for the store said.

Yodobashi Camera, another major electronics retailer with 19 outlets in Japan, said more than 1,000 people queued at its main stores in Tokyo and western Osaka.

About 1,500 game fans queued up outside the Bic Camera store in Tokyo's Yurakucho area, in the early hours, waiting for it to open at 7:00 am (2200 GMT)...

It seems that everybody is getting Wii Play, no doubt since it's a controller plus a cheap game, or a game with a free controller depending on how you look at it.

The big question now is if Nintendo can keep this momentum and/or supplies.

I was able to walk into Yodobashi Camera here in Chiba at 1:30 this afternoon and pick up one of the many Wii's they had in stock. I'm so glad I didn't line up this morning at 7am. After seeing this thread last night, I was sure I would have no chance of getting one today.
They were sold out of Wii Play and controllers so I had to go to Enterking to pick up a copy of Play.
I checked the Yahoo auctions and when I saw the fools paying ¥40,000 for the console, I was thinking of selling a train ticket to Chiba.

Does anyone here think that Wii Sports might actually outsell Zelda this week in Japan ? If not in the long run ? I think there is a big chance.

Everyone gives Nintendo the benefit of the doubt when they launch hardware, and when they release a major games like Zelda or Mario.

The real key will be how they follow up with software launches. If its as fallow as GC was with their first party stuff then it has the potential to stagnate just like GC.

But this does seem more positive than I've seen Nintendo and reaction to them in a long while.

Can you post a screenshot of your error message? Cause john tv apparently is easily able to get on the virtual console (though he's in Japan). I'm worried that people outside of Japan won't be able to use the service even if they have a Japanese VC so confirmation of whether it's possible or not would be nice (especially since I plan on importing later in order to play Japan-only VC/Wii games)
nvm, I logged in somehow, which was kinda weird. Now I must figure out a way to purchase jp VC games, especially since I just saw Street Fighter II on the jp VC... mother****ing US VC!

I wonder if US Wii Points cards work on the JP VC... o_O

EDIT: nvm, just bought jp Wii points with my US Visa debit card. SFII, you're mine :D

Don't they get confused, always thinking Wiimote input is intended for itself? I'd hate to constantly unplug one and plug in the other.
Before using a Wiimote, you have to sync it with one system. That way, the system is all "you're mine!" and the Wiimote goes *swoon* and they're together forever.

Call me a fanboy, but Nintendo really deserves to be #1 this gen (next gen)

I mean I have my Wii (the Nintendo one) and I've only been playing Bowling for the past week, I thought I would get bored before I get another game, but I was totally wrong...

I hope Nintendo would release a full fledged Bowling game

Enjoying this system a lot so far, but the Wiimote seems INCREDIBLY sensitive. What exactly does the slide bar under sensor options do?

Stormbringer said:
Nope. And Wii Sports is sold for 4800 Yens (compared to 6800 Yens for Zelda).

Although the system is cheaper here than elsewhere. 25,000 yen is about $216 or so.
