I'm in big trouble GAF.

I have to review this and I have been playing for 4 hours. I think I've completed something like 2% of the total game? fucckkkkk (and I mean that in a good way in terms of all the hours I'll put in but a bad way in terms of what this will mean in terms of review submission)

It's going to be impossible to have this review done anytime soon. The game is gloriously massive. Whoever said it feels like GTAIII was right on the money. I haven't felt this sense of zany open ended sandboxy do anything you absolutely want for years. The ability to go vertical at any moment just makes the game even better ...

And omg the draw distance.

I have to say, I don't think JC2 was on anyone's radar ... it's impressive when a developer/publisher doesn't need to hype a game because the quality speaks for itself ...

You are in trouble - way to easy to get distracted away from the main story in this game. But that is a good thing IMHO. I think someone in this thread finished the main quest in around 15 hours - so it is possible. Your best bet would be to grab a attack helicopter and fly around causing as much chaos (opening up agency missions) as possible - them just focus on them. Good luck...

..... so, I can just ... at any point, just, maintain flight with that L button (Super Mario World fashion) throughout the land...

just awesome

I spent 5 hours last night just dickin' about exploring, this is my new rainy day game for sure! I'm still just getting used to the currency system, but MAN that parachute + hook combo is perfection.

I feel so wasteful spending $50,000 or whatever on a jet or vehicle from the black market that I'm going to ditch in like 5 minutes anyways.

I'm not a fan of the lack of ammo either, why the hell won't the black market sell ammo?

Exactly what I stopped in to post.

I want to fuck shit up, not be all "serious" with this game. Half the time the fights just boil down to either me using the mounted (detached) machine gun on everything or using lame ass pistols the whole time.

I'm having a hard time getting into this. Take the complaints everyone leveled against Far Cry 2 and GTA IV and multiply them by 6 or so, you've got Just Cause 2; it takes "do the same thing over and over, where missions are miles and miles apart" to an entirely new level.

I'm trying to like it, I really am, but I'd honestly rather play Far Cry 2 at this point. They're strikingly similar, 'cept FC2 has the benefit of being more serious, more stealth-oriented, and first-person.

Are there any tangible rewards to getting 100% for the areas or stronghold? I noticed in the nuclear power plant stronghold that there is an empty helipad beside the one the yellow chopper spawns in so I thought maybe 100%-ing the base will cause something to spawn there but nothing happened after I hit 100%.

I still think the desert is my favorite area, even after messing around with it so much in the demo. I don't know why...maybe i've just come to admire next-gen brown after all this time!

Just Cause 2 does have the Extraction option. Once you unlock it, you can warp to any place that you've been. That kind of alleviates the "travel for miles" thing, and it doesn't need a Bus Station like FC2.

That said, combining this game with the Magic Garage/Hangar and unlockable Infinite Ammo options of Saints Row 2 would create the perfect game.

Yeah, I usually fly into a base, detach the first turret I see and start fucking shit up. Once the waves of baddies come, you'll run out of ammo way too quickly with your standard guns.

Alternate route is quickly destroy the anti-air missile launchers and hop in the helicopter that is almost always conveniently waiting on the base's helipad.

Once things are pretty much all wiped out, I clean up all of the upgrade boxes and head out.

The formula is getting a bit tedious, but running in like a fucking commando just means clearing an area takes 10 times longer (blow a few things up, kill a few dudes, then parachute away for a minute to recoup health/lower heat...rinse, repeat)

Does the PC version have mods or cheats to make unlimited ammo or spawn vehicles? For a game that excels in just screwing around and making things blow up maybe that would bring it to the next level?

Yeah I figured as much. But I kinda feel like I would be "cheating myself" out of the full game ... which would make for a crappy review.

Part of what makes the game so great is just screwing around for hours.

True enough. I can't seem to pass up any location on the map without trying for 100%. I have probably played 5 hours+ and besides a quick flight around in a jet I probably explored less than 5% of the island. I think you will be looking at 40-50hours + to get the full experience.

If anyone is playing the ps3 version, do you still have to press really firmly to shoot your gun like in the demo? Besides the lack of ammo, this was the other point of annoyance for me.

Drop 'n' Pop - deserves bonus points for Rico's "hahahaha"
It was a close up snipe but not only was I undetected but I also dropped off of a fucking skyscraper and landed directly onto the roof. I'll try to top it next time I play the game.

P.S. I don't know if I mentioned it yet but this game is awesome.

In like a week or so when these current contests are over I'll probably do one of my own and give away a XBLA or PSN game.
Oh, man, all of these prizes are going to run my contest into the ground! D:
Regardless, that is a nice snipe, there. I really like how you didn't have to use your parachute or zoom your scope. :lol

If anyone else wants to participate in this, just post a video. It would be nice if we had more than one submission. :p

Thanks. Anyone playing with these mods, how is the bolo one?

I am, it's fucking fantastic. Makes the game so much more fun because you don't have to worry about dying every second. I mean, go into one of the military bases and just see how much gunfire hits you in about 15 seconds. It would take all the fun out of it. Plus you get stronger grapple/multiple grapple which is awesome.

I just picked up the PS3 version last night so I only have a little over an hour of playtime into it but I felt the controls on the PS3 had improved over the demo - more responsive. I hate the triggers on the Dualshock but didn't feel I had to push too hard to shoot.

The map you get with the UK LE is pretty cool, has lots of interesting locations highlighted along with their co-ordinates. Has the locations of the highest base jump peaks as well.

I could post them I guess? Sorry if it's old news.

Anyone know why FRAPs kills my framerate? It doesnt matter if Im getting 80FPS or 40FPS....it dips to 20 the moment FRAPs starts recording. The only thing I havent tried is bumping down the game resolution. FRAPs is set to record at half size and 29.97 FPS.

It's trying to encode real time, that's a lot of extra work for the CPU. This is why people use dedicated hardware to encode. The better question is how does the PS3 continuously capture and still maintain the frame rate? SPUs FTW?

I was weak, I just ordered the PC version from GoGamer for $40. I need an intervention, I still need to finish GoW3, ME2 and I have FFXIII and HR to start... :(

Ok, I might as well post all of them. Don't be disappointed if these are already highlighted in the game, I can't play until it's unlocked at midnight!

Just a quick side question for people - does the wired Mad Catz xbox 360 controller work for the PC?

Definitely a CPU intensive program, what kind of chip are you running? I only get about ~5 FPS max decrease using FRAPs on a quad.

Here's a short video I threw together of some "high up antics" using FRAPS

It does. It even recognizes it as a native 360 controller under XP SP3.

Excellent, though I'm under windows 7 but I'm sure that's not an issue. Looks like I'm going to head over to the Shack in a minute to pick one up. I'm sick of these keyboard controls with the vehicles.

Something to keep in mind though:

I bought one of these about a year ago, and the right stick lost the ability to auto-center itself in about 2 weeks.

The thing is really poorly built. I'd go for an actual Microsoft controller if I were you.

Loving the video capture, something i've always wished open world games would have.

Heres a funny clip

One of the first missions...clearly not grasping the controls at that point
Would have been evne more awesome if you were still latched on to the front of that jeep when it fell of the bridge. :D

Is there an option to save the 30 second clips to your PS3 hard drive?

Yeah, either the hard drive or youtube.

i5 750 Quad Core. This is the only game that gets killed when I record with FRAPs.
What do your settings in FRAPs look like? What res are you running JC2 at?

I was driving a 474, chasing another one that had taken off just before me. I found out that if they just barely touch in any way, they both explode. Kinda dissapointing. I was hoping I could get the other one to crash by ramming it.

That's strange then, definitely more than capable which is what I expected. I think my FRAPS settings are the default though I have the framerate set at 60 using full size. I'm running at 1280x720.

when running FRAP it is more important to have a fast harddrive

It's not, just like Halo 3 isn't actually recording video the entire time you play. :lol

I doubt it. The youtube feature is a PS3 SDK library. Too make it universal it must be encoding the frame buffer directly the HD. Halo 3 saves all the game data and reconstructs it later with the game engine.

are there any Tanks in this game? With a giant tank gun style? I haven't seen any.
I used a Bradley type of tank to demolish part of the military harbor in the center of the map, but that's the only tank that I've seen really.

do they come with a really high wanted level? I've seen 6 wheeled APC's with machine guns and lots of humvee's with guns, but not any tanks, i haven't tried to just piss off the military and get the army called in hardcore though. maybe i'll do that later.

I've only seen a tank come after me once. Most of the time, they're just sitting in enemy bases just begging to get hijacked.
