KINGSGLAIVE: Final Fantasy XV Comic Con Trailer, Release Date and Confirmed Theaters

I'm interested in the performances and how the movie does in the very limited release. It'll be funny if it does better here than in Japan (unlikely though). Probably won't see it myself until FF15 Deluxe gets delivered.
It did horribly in Japan. FF actually sells more here (JP hearts DQ much more) IIRC so it wouldn't be all that surprising tbh

Okay ummmm I think Knights of the Round is 99% confirmed now.

Holy shit.

It looks fantastic! Now I'm actually more excited to watch this than to play the game. Is this wrong somehow? lol

I think that's what they did this for, reel you in with the movie and make it so good you want to buy the game after finishing it :p

This indeed seems like a very exciting intro to the story of FFXV whereas most of what we've seen of FFXV so far is pretty low-key, but FFXV will undoubtedly have its fair share of similar stuff once the story really gets going. We've already see glimpses of it, though Tabata seems adamant to spoil as little as possible (at least so far, let's see what these last couple of months of hype will give us). Think of this like it's the Midgar of FFXV. FFVII slowed down considerably after the event-rich & exciting Midgar section, only for things to ramp up again as the meat of the rest of the story got going and shit started to hit the fan. The same will be true for FFXV.

I'm so confused by this. It takes place during the game... so what are you suppose to do? Watch the movie before the game possibly spoiling elements of the games story, or play the game before the movie possibly spoiling the movies story?

That's a great analogy. U should really consider spacing your paragraphs though

Seems more like a prologue to the game. Watch it before playing the game. Pretty simple, no?

I think someone (Tabata?) said as much. Watch the movie first.

It's overlapping only with the beginning of FFXV with events that aren't shown in the game, movie is where it all begins so you should start with that and then play the game.

Yeah, obviously a long JRPG won't have the same pacing as a 2 hour action movie. But it should have plenty of those moments during the 50 or whatever hours the main story lasts.

Seems like in a previous plan, the events of Kingsglave would have been the opening events of the game anyway. They just sectioned that part out into its own film and expanded on it.

Oh, okay. I seem to remember during the Uncovered event that they were pushing it more as covering the entirety of the games events. This is much better.

Yeah there are so many hints that
Knights of the Rounds
are going to be a central part in the game/stroy, they could have done a better job at hiding it for a while imho.

Mind giving me some context/perspective on the Japanese Box Office? Don't know much on what numbers their box office pulls. All I know is that it opened at the #10 spot showing on 1/4th-1/6th the number of screens as the #5-6 spots, and that they had tripled the number of ticket sales a week later.

That said, I'm not expecting too much on the story, but the movie does look gorgeous.

I love how many references and callbacks to past FF games are in Kingsglaive and XV. Not counting XI and XIV, which are filled details from the singleplayer games, XV is the one that feels more connected to the franchise since IX, imo.

The warriors of light, the appearance of certain summons, the classic FF monster designs, the crystal mythos, and much more, it clashes perfectly with the setting and the character designs. August 30th can't come soon enough.

From the panel:

"Kingsglaive stands on its own and can be enjoyed without knowledge of the previous games. But if you play Final Fantasy XV there are many references in the game that you wouldn't necessarily understand without watching the film. Kingsglaive depicts the events that lead into the game's story, starting with the main character King Regis fighting the enemy empire.

Along with Final Fantasy XV, the main theme portrayed in Kingsglaive is the bond between father and son. While watching the film you'll see the love they have for each other and understanding the pressures of fufilling the responsibility of being King."

Watch the movie before playing the game.

The anime is to give more insight into the bros and how they became friends and such.

I hope Ultros is in the game as well.

EDIT: Also, for any Finnish Final Fantasy fans, I asked Finnkino if they were going to show Kingsglaive and they said no, Finland would not be getting any showings as of now, at least not by them.

...But if you play Final Fantasy XV there are many references in the game that you wouldn't necessarily understand without watching the film...

Eh I hate when games do this. That means the game on its own will feel incomplete for those not buying both. Extended Universe is supposed to extend the universe, not hold it up.

I don't know if this is more FF than the game (maybe) but there is one sure thing. It's 5000 more FF than Spirit Within. it's a shame this is not a full theater release! grow balls SE!!

Also ULTROS! That's all you had to do to count me in.

This is my understanding of it. The main story starts with an invasion. During Versus days, Noctis is supposedly in the city when the invasion happens. Now that it becomes XV, Tabata decides that the invasion doesn't quite suit the tone they were going for so they excised it and made Noctis not even in the city at the time. This excised part is then being adapted as Kingsglaive -- with plenty of addition and changes of course.

So I guess Kingsglaive is essentially a prequel+side story to XV. It won't be spoiling the ending of the game as it ends right around beginning/middle point in the overall story.

Well the movie is basically the game's opening they cut it and remixed it in order for the game to release in timely fashion and not wait until 2018. Which is why Insommia isn't explorable and relagated to a battle zone.

So I guess Kingsglaive is essentially a prequel+side story to XV.

It's the opening of the game in a perfect world.

Looks like fun action shlock with amazing CGI. I'm in. I guess since they didn't include Ardyn's horrible VA they had to include the silly Glauca one.

It has got nothing to do with the "tone" & Tabata removing it because of that and everything to do with the fact that making Kingsglaive into a playable portion of the game FFXV would have taken too long on top of FFXV already having been somewhat rebooted in the move to PS4 and Xbone & becoming a mainline FF. What they can do in a little less than 2 hours in a movie would have had to be far expanded upon if it was a game with some room for exploration, traversal between locations (vs. a movie that can mostly cut running around to just show the essential parts), creating interactive battles from everything you see being battled against in the movie etc.

FFXV is still a part of the same story and its story will have similar tone at parts as the movie. Tabata has just been hiding most of the rest of the game that will have stuff like Kingsglaive in it, though we've recently seen more hints of that kind of stuff still being in the game.

It won't be spoiling the ending of the game as it ends right around beginning/middle point in the overall story.
Kingsglaive takes place during the first tutorial-ish chapter of FFXV. It gets nowhere near the "middle point" of the overall story. It's done by the time FFXV's intro is done.

Any chance of this coming to Australia's cinemas? :/

Absolutely not. We get nothing down here. I'm still salty Ratchet & Clank was scheduled to finally come to Event Cinema's on July 21st but then they removed that listing completely.

Is there a list somewhere of participating theatres?

Hopefully they will let me rent it digitally. My copy of FFXV comes with Kingslaive on blu ray but i dont want to wait until Sep 30 to watch it.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Can't believe I'm there <3

The reception has been good in Japan I believe?

WHEW. So good. The visuals are insane, direction looks wonderful, VA sounded tight... SE really outdid themselves with this one. Can't wait for the Blu-ray on September 30, though I'm not sure if I won't cave in and also watch the digital release a month earlier.

Very good. From industry people like Hironobu Sakaguchi, Shuehei Yoshida, Katsuhiro Harada, Yasumi Matsuno etc. and also the Japanese user ratings are really good.

Lots of positive impressions so far, yes.

Sakaguchi:

Towards the end of the lecture, Sakaguchi-san encouraged the audience to go see Kingsglaive. He found it “incredible,” and as someone who made a movie himself, he understand well how much work went into it.

According to Sakaguchi-san, the visuals are “even better than the trailer makes them look,” the story is “great,” and it justifies the group of four men who appear in the game.

He explained that at first, when he saw the four protagonists, they annoyed him because there was no female character. After watching the movie he understood, and he thinks players will be able to enjoy the game even more after watching it.

Some GAFers who saw it:

@birthbysleep:

The movie was great, action sequences were amazing as expected. Nyx was a great character. Luna was excellently portrayed and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of her story in the game. Ravus was super cool but was barely in it.

Some dislikes:
There wasn't really that much backstory given into the lore of XV like I was hoping for, but maybe I missed a few things because my Japanese isn't the greatest. Also it was kind of distracting because the lips are very obviously synced to the English voice so it didn't match at all to the Japanese voice.

[...]

Although the action sequences rival any typical Hollywood summer blockbuster, there isn't so much payoff with the story, which is intentional as it merely sets up things to come in XV. Those that are not familiar with XV might not appreciate the dramatic moments as much.

However, I think this would absolutely entertain general audiences. The story is basic enough to follow, and borders on Game of Thrones like vibes with the political drama. Hopefully they market this properly, it could do really well.

A friend I went with who is not a FF fan and was unfamiliar with XV found the movie to be quite entertaining and asked if their would be a sequel to see what happens when Luna finally reaches Noctis. So if SE's main goal with Kingsglaive was getting average people interested in the game, I think they have a chance at succeeding.

@Hasemo:

Just came back from the cinema. I really enjoyed the movie, although Japanese voice felt really off for some reason. I'm saying this as someone who prefers Japanese VO in the game.

As for the movie itself, I really enjoyed battle scenes, which for the most part felt much less "chaotic" like some moments in Advent Children. Regarding the story, the movie did a really good job of introducing the world of FFXV. World building might have even been... too good. By which I mean, depending on how the game tackles introducing this part of the story, people might feel a bit lost if they don't see the movie.

[...]

This one might be the most beautiful CG movie yet. The people in this movie, sometime I can't tell the difference between them and real people

By the way, one thing that surprised me is that even old people came to watch Kingsglaive too. Like 50 years old or something. Not just one or two but maybe more than 10 of them watched in the same theater

@Masked Man:

The film is excellent. Get hyped, y'all!

-

And from the early showing a few days ago where mostly industry folks were:

@benzy:

Katsuhiro Harada (Tekken series):
-Those who are planning to buy FFXV - you have to watch it. Those who aren't planning to buy - you will if you watch the movie. It respects the series' predigree, but damn, what a way to handle the baton to the next generation.

-Thinking that SE made it in-house kind of drives me crazy. How long did it take to render every second of the movie? Hours? Dozens of hours?

-Yeah, the bad guys are an annoying geezer and a weird dude. I bloody hate them now, but considering how well they were depicted, mission accomplished. I've already sworn I'm going to absolutely wreck them in the game.

Other impressions
-Holy s***. Just... holy s***. Final Fantasy at its best and then it shot into Hollywood. Monsters felt outright alien sometimes.

-Tears. Cried a lot. I think the whole theater was crying at the end. There was outright sobbing around the mid-point, too. Wonder if Noctis realizes what a huge burden he's really inherited.

-I won the tickets, but it was much better than expected. Will go to see again.

-A huge work, really. Kind of unexpected in some aspects, but in a good way.

-Amazing! Having to wait until September to play the game makes me depressed now.

-A beautiful movie, though the action scenes were sometimes so fast they were hard to follow (lol). Wish the heroine's VA was a bit more expressive.

-Fantastic, might go to see it in the theater again. Story felt like a part of a really huge tale. Knew nothing about the setting before watching it and still could follow the movie just fine.

-Luna is a seriously bold and audacious heroine. Not the angry screaming type, but very daring. Final verdict: why isn't it September 30 yet!

-The Versus/XV project might have had a troubled history, but Kingsglaive definitely delivered. Really interested in the story now.

-Putting CGI aside (we all knew it'd look great) I was impressed by the pacing and composition. Even the prologue alone felt like a fully realized tale. The story also doesn't get bogged down in exposition and the balance of silence and motion is superb. My only criticism is that considering how rawly realistic and gruesome the story is, it should have been more bloody. Really recommend watching it before playing the game, because people who know only the demo might get floored by how dark the story really is.

-Highly recommended, seriously. The previous FF movie felt sappy and soap-opera-ish, but KG is very different. It felt Western. Those who like action and stories more focused on strength of will, zeal, and pride should definitely watch it.

-Simply put, fantastic. The visuals, the music, the impact, everything. Was worried about the VAs, but they did an excellent job.

-Been waiting for this since Versus' announcement and yeah, it delivered. Very emotive and the story reduced me to tears. Nyx is a great character and it really drives home how much hope and desperation rests on Noctis' shoulders. "Everything for the Future King", indeed.

-Way too amazing. Stunningly beautiful world and effects, the sunrise scenes in particular. The OST delivered too: powerful and dynamic, but also beautiful. Spent the whole credits crying. The OST was giving me constant goosebumps,
but the peak was probably the party scene, accompanied by haunting Somnus
. For people who had been following the project since the Versus days, the whole thing hit like a truck.

Watching this and reading the reviews I'm bummed that the theater release is so limited while movies like Angry Birds/World of Warcraft and Ghostbusters get the full treatment.

Trailer looked great.

Honestly couldn't tell u. My comment was based solely off the box office thread made for its release where everyone said it did bad. I wish it'd get a fullish release here stateside. U can't just squander Aaron Paul and GoT cast members, America loves these people!

Second week in Japan had a nice sales bump because of the good reception and word-to-mouth.
