LTTP: Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen

Let me just first say HOLY SHIT THIS GAME IS AMAZING!
I feel so bad i didn't give this game a try when it was out i have it from PS+ IGC and only now started playing it because i saw several Bound by Flame streams on PS4 and i felt some RPG itch so i download it and started playing.

I was never a big RPG fan i never played any of the FF games and i am PlayStation fan since the PSX days, i played Fallout 3 and Kingdom of Amular: R i have Fallout: New Vegas but never got around to play it.

Anyway about Dragon's Dogma DA i can safely say i am now in love with RPGs like DD i really now understood why people love RPGs so much, i still can't wrap my head around how good this game is i mean the mechanics the content the visuals the gameplay the story and am just like 20 hours in.
Climbing those Golems and weakening them by hitting their vital points then watching them fall while you stand atop their heads is just glorious i was like "wow this fucking game!"
And there is the Pawns feature i mean holy shit what an amazing feature it makes a lot of difference and they are not like those stupid A.I. doing nothing they actually help! hell they kill monsters while am tripping all over the place trying to survive because i got my self a boss i can't handle at my current level! but those motherfucker keeps bringing them to their knees so i can finish them off! I don't think i can love any other RPG after this the pawn system is a must for me now.

As you can see am really enjoying this game i am at level 33 and i just killed the Griffin (boy that was one hell of a battle) so i want some advice regarding the "Combine" i really feel lost i mean there is a lot of stuff i can create but i can't carry them all i don't know what to prioritize so i ended up dumping everything at the storage and only take with me mature and potent Greenwarish and some stamina potion that i always forget to use >.< other than that i don't know what do with all the stuff i have.
Also what advantages i can take of the Black Cats business? i know they copy stuff but why i want to do that? the description says the item lose its power so its not that i can reforge healing potion which is also cost money? so what am i missing with this?

If anyone have more tips please let me know am still fresh at RPGs

I just can't wait for the next Dragon's Dogma i mean looking at how much they squeezed out of PS3 makes me wonder what they can do with the PS4, am going to buy the shit out of that game i feel want to support them after giving us this one for free through PS+.

So anyone reading this that have slight interest on RPGs go play this now! heck even if you don't like RPGs just try it you won't regret it.

DA was soooooo good.

I love this game so much for its sense of adventure and the variety in combat. There are plenty of flaws some major, some minor and I hope they are addressed in a future sequel but damn some of the best fights I've experienced in a videogame.

The pawn system was also a great idea and damn that character creation tool is the best I've used.

About healing; what I did was locate the healing springs. Carry lots of bottles with you and gather the water there. Its a group heal and heals quite a lot. I even placed a portcrystal there.

So everyone's gushing about how good this supposedly is, but does anyone want to elaborate on why? I bought Dark Arisen a while ago, played a bit of it, decided it wasn't as good as Dark Souls, and stopped. What awesome amazing things haven't I seen yet?

If you have not figured it out, then there really isnt anything we can say to convince you otherwise truthfully.

Most likely your problem is you tried to compare it to Dark Souls.

Bitter Black Isle is the exact reason Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen as it is incredibly challenging and wonderfully rewarding especially once you get to the point that you can down Death. It is like Capcom's take on Dark Souls and still one of my favourite experiences.

BBI is a labyrinth with many floors and once you finally down the main boss you cycle back around and do it again but everything has changed and the loot goes from great to outstanding.

Is it truly hopeless to wait on a PC version? Should I just go ahead and get it for PS3?

Probably wouldn't play it for a little while(got lots on my plate as it is), but I *definitely* do want to get around to this at some point.

Get it for the PS3. No reason to wait since its been this long already.

It's been out two years this month I think. If it were a Western publisher I might say it's worth waiting, but being Capcom and knowing their relationship with PC, it's probably futile to wait for a PC port.

360 vs PS3 is decided on tearing vs frame rate iirc. I can only speak for the PS3 version but the FR wasn't bad at all.

Oh and if you do get it make sure you got to the OT so people can help you and rent your pawns :)

I have to agree, no reason to wait for PC. Plays just fine (mostly) on PS3. I love this game and still need to go back and finish my 2nd run. The way It handles NG+ is pretty cool too. Well worth it.

Edit: If I didn't have such a backlog, I'd jump back in right now. Summer for sure since its drought season ;)

I got stuck in the game :/

I took a quest to escort the inn owner but he died and now I can't change/buy skills and I can't find any other place where I can do it.

Dragon's Dogma is definitely a gem! Definitely one of my favorite games of this gen. It would look soooo good on PC with better textures etc.. (plus the fact that I could walk around in armor from Berserk with Guts' sword totally sealed the deal for me)

I have bad news for you, OP: I don't know a single other RPG that is like Dragon's Dogma. I dearly wish I did, it left me with an itch no other game scratches.

And I'm really surprised a lot of people would rather have regular coop rather than the pawn system. I found it fresh and fun. And pawn AI is really quite good most of the time.
Also, it may be just me, but I don't hate the pawn chatter at all. It is part of the reason wandering in the wilds with a bunch of pawns feels like an actual adventure: they are companions commenting on what is going on. Sure, there is not enough variety to their speeches, but I wouldn't turn them off if given a chance.

I have to be cautious when talking about this game, cause when I mentioned I prefer this over both Skyrim and Dark Souls, the wolves come to attack.

There's nothing wrong with preferring satisfying combat to waving plastic swords around. Also nothing wrong with liking a fun game with flashy combos over a slow and sadistic one, as far as I'm concerned.

So everyone's gushing about how good this supposedly is, but does anyone want to elaborate on why? I bought Dark Arisen a while ago, played a bit of it, decided it wasn't as good as Dark Souls, and stopped. What awesome amazing things haven't I seen yet?

A few reasons why I love it:
- brilliant sense of adventure. If I trek into the environment it always feels like a journey and there's a tangible sense of progression as all enemies are challenging initially, but you overcome them as you level up and get stronger. I particularly love encountering the giant enemies in the environment (the only issue with this being that they're always in the same spot).
- the pawn system is really great. I love being connected to the community without being beholden to online play or co-op.
- there's so much depth. The systems are extremely clever and deep and intense, and there are literally thousands of items, pieces of armour and equipment. There is a staggering amount of customisation.
- the combat system is fast, fun and brilliant. There's a huge amount of variety between the classes too, from wizards, archers, swordfighters and assassins.
- Gransys is huge, and I enjoy travelling across it. Yes, it gets boring after 50 hours or whatever, but I like the balance there was between walking, portcrystals and ferrystones.

Probably some other things I've forgotten right now. I love so much about this game, but mainly the combat, environment and enemies. It's a very different game from the Souls series, and they go in tandem very nicely.

Not comparing it to Dark Souls would be a good start.

It's fun to create your character, your pawn, it's fun to explore the world and slain huge monsters, the combat is super fast and reactive, and varies a lot depending on the class.
There's a ton of gear you can mix and match and the night is dark and full of terrors.
The bestiary is detailed and varied (many creatures have their own fun quirks) which makes for fun combat, if you limit the playstyle to one or zero pawns, especially.

It gets a bit tedius in the mid point, where it becomes piss easy, but then it picks up again in difficulty by the end.

I got stuck in the game :/

I took a quest to escort the inn owner but he died and now I can't change/buy skills and I can't find any other place where I can do it.

There are loads of places where you can change skills/vocation. Most inns and there are people at encampments who also allow you to do that. How far are you in the game?

If a escort quest NPC dies, they will respawn in 7 in game days. The quest is permanently lost though which is important since some quest lines and rewards can only be gotten after completing the quest.

Like usually 30fps with occasional, minor drops?

I couldn't play GTAV on the PS3, for reference.

I haven't played GTA5 but 30fps most of the time. FR drops when you have giants mobs casting spells and pawns casting big spells at the same time (this happens in BBI). Didn't happen to me that much even at those situations though (probably since my mage was useless -__- ) Nothing brutal like Blighttown though.

Dunno, took some time until it clicked for me. I liked both DD:DA and DS and think there are similarities between the games. Playing carefully is usually rewarding when exploring new places. However you do become and feel more powerful in the end when playing DD compared to DS.

In the beginning the encounters on the roads could be a bit harsh, I found that the game opened up alot more once you got powerful enough to roam where ever you wanted without getting your ass kicked. The most enjoyable part of the game is the dungeons and especially BBI anyway.

Late game is also alot about pimping your pawn with the most awesome gear. It's pretty cool when more and more people start to hire your pawn. I definitely gonna get DD2
(please capcpom)
day one and put alot of effort into my pawn.

Wow didn't know you can take water from the healing spring, thanks man am so happy i made this thread

They probably didn't port it to PC because they didn't want a bunch of 1 star reviews on Amazon from dickholes complaining that it lacks proper mouse and keyboard controls.

The number of Portcrystals is limited (there are... 10? I think? this is one of the things Dark Arisen fixed, but I get a bit confused between the versions as a result), but you can place them, and then pick them back up and place them somewhere else if you need to. Once one's placed, you can teleport to it as many times as you want to, no limits there, other than the number of Ferrystones you have, obviously ;)

You should probably put a Portcrystal at the Shadow Fort entrance, at the Healing Spring in northern Gransys, the Greatwall Encampment and the Witchwood shortcut if you found it already (I have no idea how far in the game you are and how many you have, so it's kinda hard to name the best spots right now). Generally, you want them placed at major landmarks to get to quest objectives faster, in encampments where traders and riftstones are, and spread them on the map more or less regularly so that there are few areas that require a lot of footwork to get to.

Ok nice i have most of these landmarks i have 4 portcrystals so far am gonna spread them following your suggestion. thanks

They're masterworks all, you can't go wrong.

Glad you're enjoying it, OP. I still haven't finished it since getting it on PS+ months ago, but your enthusiasm may just convince me to delve back in. The reason I'm on a hiatus is because I forwent the main quest to do some exploring (after just meeting the Duke), and spent a few hours fighting my way to Bluemoon Tower. Finding it locked upon my arrival irritated me a bit, as I had forgotten to bring my ferrystones - my own dumb mistake, entirely - and deflated my hype!

For sure OP, the game is absolutely amazing. One of the highlights of last gen. Just wait 'till you get to Bitterblack Isle. That's when the party really starts.

I have discovered almost the whole map and yet I haven't found a single inn besides the one in Gran Soren. And what are encampments ?

You know at this point, I rather Capcom make a Dragon Dogma 2 then a PC port of the first game. Just need to make the next game is available on PC as well.

Damn, how come I never noticed them ? Do I have to progress the story to get them or are they always there ?

always there you just need to find the locations. should be pretty obvious. the npc is usually a guard wearing a backpack.

Easiest is Ecbal in The Encampment. You know where you did your training next to Cassardis.

There are several other places such as the one next to Devilfire Grove (the lake which has a dragon roaming about), actually I wont tell you the rest :p Just explore more, its really rewarding after venturing into a new area and spending hours exploring to find one especially when your low on items and its night.

All right, I will give it a shot. I really want to change vocations, playing ranger is dull as the damage the arrows do is miniscule and it's just boring. I want to try the warrior hoping it has some serious combos :)

Damn, how come I never noticed them ? Do I have to progress the story to get them or are they always there ?

They are always there. You just have to find them.

If i remember correctly, there are 3 Rest Camps: one near Blightned Manse, another near The Greatwall and the last one at Devilfire Grove

Except:
- Insufferable and repetitive pawn chatter you can't ever turn off (seriously, what were they thinking)
talk you your pawn at the chair in town, your own pawn does become quiet when you do it ,it's other people's rented pawns that still talk
- Repetitive encounters. Oh yay goblins again! How terribly exciting. BBI largely fixed that but it's still a problem in the main game
are you kidding me, repetitive encounters? There's so much variety
- Stupidest "romance" system ever and it's mandatory
true that it's silly, but has no bearing on anything in the game other than a 30 second cutscene at the end of the story... so why does it even matter
- Clunky menus
fixed in the dark arisen goty edition, the only issue is that it's a pain to use healing items or the buff items which just made me not use them, a pc port with some hotkeys would have solved this but instead we got the typical console controls limitations

- A plethora of boring grindy MMO-like "kill X, collect Y" quests (or even more annoying and pointless "escort" ones) and a very small minority of substantial and interesting side-quests (one of which forces you into some idiotic romance subplot which is actually unrelated to the in-game affinity system.... >_<)
Those are bounty board side quests that you have no reason to even do in the first place, all the 'kill quests' are completed naturally MANY times over just by playing the game normally.
I skipped the escort quests the game has so much meaningful content that the token bounty board filler can be safely ignored.

- A tepid-at-best story (I don't care much, but it's definitely not a strong point)
Opinions, I enjoyed the story behind the boss a lot, if you didn't that is fair, I think skyrim has awful tolkien style lollore and others seem to like it, so again; opinions
What the game does objectively have in spades is ATMOSPHERE though, the world building is so good and the sense of adventure is the best in any action rpg.

- An exploitable but stupid loot drop system (high end gear from Everfall and BBI mostly)
You're talking about everfall chests, starting to wonder if you actually played BBI as there is no such thing in the expansion, the loot system and progression is amazing.
If you feel compelled or forced to farm those chests in everfall that's on you and your OCD, I am glad the chests actually gave some good loot while I'm going through everfall, the combat is so much fun why would you go reset and farm chests? And why the hell should namco 'nerf' the chests so OCD people wouldn't feel compelled to abuse them at he expense of all the regular players

- Atrocious framerate drops vs certain bosses and/or during certain spells (talking about sub-Blighttown slideshows here, no hyperbole)
very true, the framerate gets bad at times (the average framerate is improved a lot in the dark arisen GOTY version because they lowered the draw distance etc, but there were still a few areas like the 3 cyclops fortress battle where the framerate just tanked.)
Running with 3 sorc pawns was a bad idea too as that would be guaranteed to hurt your framerate.
95 percent of the game stayed at or "close enough" 30 fps though (let's be clear I'm talking about console standards here, I don't think 30 fps or sub 30 fps is acceptable, but it's no worse than infamous 2 or uncharted 2 or the ac games on consoles)

- Only one save slot, so you need an alternate PSN account to make a new character (I can't imagine how infuriating that must be on Xbox since I doubt people would get an additional XBL Gold account...)
yes and no
It's an absolutely retarded restriction that shouldn't exist, but in the end it didn't affect me the way I thought it would because you can reroll as you please with no cost and I ended up playing ALL classes to completion on my one save
Sure is a dumb ass restriction though it would've been nice to be able to replay certain missions at will

- Class balance could use some improvements, some classes really are there for Augment grinding only (Warrior y u suck so bad?)
ALL classes can complete BBI 2.0 just fine (I know because I did so), warrior is the weaker one of the bunch but it still works fine
Whining about class balance is a huge disservice to how fun all the classes are to play, and class 'balance' in a singleplayer game can suck my dick tbh, this isn't a blizzard game (thank god it's not a blizzard game, thank fucking god)

- Presence of bikini armours (yes, that's a negative in my book)
The males had bikini armor too and overall this game had lots of classy realistic looking armor sets for females. more than other games, but whatever.

- Lack of challenge outside of BBI. Hard mode is more annoying than really challenging
Everfall wasn't challenging?
Yes the game had 2 big difficulty spikes and a big difficulty drop off for the last 30 percent of the story mode (before post game) and this is a legit downside, but BBI more than makes up for it.
I feel like everyone who complains about this is one of those people who got stomped by bandits and is still mad.

Don't get me wrong, I love the game, put hundreds of hours into it, have 2 characters both at high level with BBI lv3. gear, but there is definitely plenty about the game could be massively, massively improved. I for one couldn't care less for a PC port, but I'd love a sequel that addressed all of those issues. It could go from "pretty damn good" to "serious competition to the Souls games" if they did. ^^

I could come up with a much longer list of serious issues with the souls games (ui, AI, hitboxes ,framerate etc etc etc etc) but those still don't prevent those games from people people's goat.
BBI has a big edge on any other ARPG (including souls games) in the gameplay , magic and atmosphere department
No game is perfect but DD has all the core bits that take talent to make at 10/10 quality.
As you said you can imagine a sequel with the one save bullcrap/pawn chatter/pawn UI and other things that don't take talent to fix (and much of which like the UI and difficulty curve was fixed in dark arisen) for it to be the perfect literal game of all time.

I have discovered almost the whole map and yet I haven't found a single inn besides the one in Gran Soren. And what are encampments ?

At this point I'd steer you to the Wiki. There's so much depth to the game that I've found it invaluable.

Off the top of my head, the places to rest and send items to storage are: Cassardis, Encampment near Cassardis (where you fight the Hydra), Gran Soren, rest camp near Devilfire Grove, rest camp near Duke's Manse, camp outside the Greatwall, Mountain Waycastle (maybe?), the Shadow Fort (maybe?) and Bitterblack Isle.

Loved DD, So was always going to buy DA, Loved the pawn system where people would use your pawn and give an item as reward, Battle system is where it shines, Nice variety, Story wasnt too shabby but for difficulty i would say Dark Arisen beat the living shit out of me until i was a decent enough level and even then it's extremely challenging.

One of my fave games of the last generation and recommend to anyone who loves RPG's, Likes creating the hero, And loves a challenge!

Plus it's cheap now so you wont be taking a massive loss if you dont like it.

Indeed my friend.
lol i know how you felt it happens to me a lot since am still learning the game once i tend to forget to bring essential stuff like keys and ferrystones

More than minor if you ask me. Some people say Dark Arisen runs better than the original did on PS3 (which is what this comparison is of) but...that was not my experience, this is pretty representative of what I played on DD:DA on PS3 vs 360.

It's not unplayable, and if it's your only option you should still get it, but if anyone had the option I'd suggest the 360 version every time.

Immediately. The quest marker for BBI will be a purple circle on your mini-map. Just head over to the lady on the pier once you're given control and you're good to go.

I had trouble playing this at first too. The lack of story and characters made it feel boring...

Little that I knew that this game would suck me in like no other in a very long time! The adventuring, searching for gear or loot, and the lack of fast travel (at the start) really adds to the enjoyment. I enjoy the fact that when I accept a request and I have to escort someone halfway across the map to a place I haven't been yet I get nervous.

The pawn system is pretty neat too.

It really nails everything that I felt Skyrim lacked: a fun combat system, exploration, and fear.

Oh cool! Would I be high enough level if I was in NG+ or is it pretty unforgiving

A few hours into the game now-done a few quests in Gran Soren.

When can I fast travel?

I believe at that point of the game you are limited to only being able to travel back to Gran Soren and Cassidris. You will need to use ferrystones to do that...which are $2k a piece IIRC.

A few hours into the game now-done a few quests in Gran Soren.

Go to The Black Cat in Gran Soren and buy Ferrystones. With these items, you can travel to locations that have a PortCrystal.

Throughout the game, you will find some Portcrystals that you can place them where ever you want.

In New Game +, The Black Cat also sells Portcrystals.

I'd go on a whim and blame the entire FPS drops on the mystic Knight class, and I still love using him. FPS drops be damn when you fucking all types of shit up, you learn to live with it lol.

But on another note, it seems that you do much more damage when you attack an enemy that's not aware of your presence, is there some kind of stat that makes this true?
