Mafia 2 PC first review- 80%

Dirty console peasant here. I'm actually really looking for to this. Besides it comes out in August. What other good games besides Metroid Other M come out next month.

Well with people coming off Red Dead, a game that feels similar but is double to triple the length of this there are certain expectations.
Sure, RDR might be 3x as long, but the story is dick. RDR has qualities in other dimensions.

Can't tell whether the one dimension's qualities even the other's out across games, usually not, but this score seems to be dumb if that's really the gist of the review.

I'm glad it's linear. I'm sick of these sandbox games. They're TOO open ended.

Seriously, in RDR there was a quest where you have to escort the girl into town. The entire 'quest' is getting into a wagon, listening to her talk, and then you get there.

I think I'm pretty well done with Rockstar's version of an open world game. To much mindless busy-work.

God... Now every game needs to be a 50hr jrpg with mindless filler gameplay and crap...
Take it all with a grain of salt man. If it is 10 hours: "ONLY ten hours, what the fuck!?." If it is 30 hours: "THIRTY HOURS!? I don't have time for this shit!!"

I find that reviewers across the board grossly underestimate the amount of time a game takes to beat. If a reviewer says "6 to 8 hours," it always takes me 10-12. If they say 30 hours, I always end up putting in closer to 40.

So 20 hours is the sweet spot?

Sounds like I'll be enjoying this one. Loved the linear open world approach in Mafia 1 and the fact that it's not long as crap makes it even better.

I'm wondering how much PhysX effects are in the game and if the suggested requirements are accurate (dedicated GTX 285, which seems a bit much)?

If I remember correctly the last time I played the game till the end, that time I was rushing through the story and it was like 15 hours.

The first time I know it took me a lot more, but thats becuase I didnt rush and lots of the time just played a little when I was in the missions, doing other things and trying to find cool locations.
And then there was free ride.

i thought this was more of a gta competitor and was open world. 10 hours, earns it a rent.
Oh junior, how wrong are you.

My reasoning alone....

OT: the fact that you do not have a possum tag means there is something wrong in the world of GAF. This man here delivered on one of the greatest threads in GAF History!

Its probably like the first one.

Does it have a freeride mode?

Or better yet, freeride extreme?
It better have that and the unlockable crazy fast cars :D

Nice. I hate open world sandbox games and 10 hours sounds perfect to me. I don't like playing 20 hour games that I will never finish.

Nice. After sinking over 30 hours into Assassins Creed 2, Red Dead Redemption and Mass Effect 2, I'm really burnt out on open world games.

Dude, I spend more time mixing a song than the length of this game (at least according to the review; I'm still taking it with a grain of salt.) That should NEVER happen.

You want a short game with tons of bad filler? Mass Effect. 15 hour story with extraordinarily repetitive side missions for the most part. It also had great presentation.

Why is the gaming media now so enamoured with open world games?

This IS an open-world game. But it's NOT like GTA. GTA was built to go around wreaking avok around the city when you didn't feel like going through tje main/side missions. This is not supposed to follow the same principle.

Ok that magazine is pretty trustworthy, but come on 10 hours? Sounds like they either rushed through it or pretty much only did missions. I honestly doubt they already had a review copy so they probably played it somewhere else.

Either way, first day buy for me, been waiting on this for years. Who cares if it's not like GTA, why does every game have to be like GTA for you people?

Also, people saying NO to a 10 hour awesome game with a great ( probably ) story is weird to me. And especially if those people live in America since you can always get great deals there.

I'd much rather play a polished but linear game (HL2, Bioshock) than a ginormous sandbox that doesn't have much to do.

When did linearity become a bad word in this industry?

Isn't that length more suited for games that have a Dante Must Die mode..? I wonder what else the game throws at you.

I'm pretty sure that the 10 hours thing is a measure of the time it takes to complete the storyline. Certainly less than GTA and more so RDR, but far from meaning the game will only last for 10 hours. For starters they may have rushed through the whole thing. Plus we know there are side missions like stealing cars for one of the characters. We also know there are cloth stores, reataurants, etc. The city is also totaly open from the begining.

I guess their problem with "linearity" is just that there aren't so many side-missions that pop out of nowhere like in RDR (oh sir please, my wife was kidnaped and now they're gonna hang her! HEEEELLLLPPP!) neither does it have so many side-missions like in GTA. Also the game isn't built for messing around the town racing, killing cops and civilians, etc like in GTA, which is built from the ground up for "messing around". However I would hardly call that "non-linearity". The fact that the storyline is more focused and directed and there's less side-missions doens't make a game "more linear". Everything I've read os far makes it sound like a normal, expected open-world game but with more controled "realistic" rules and a tighter focus on storyline.

So it's linear and 10 hours long? Sounds like shit. Gotta love all the consolite morons showing up with the "LINEAR? SOUNDS AMAZING!" shit. An audience that has been fed shit so long they have actually developed a taste for it. :lol

Did they not play the first? I mean since I don't have the full review here yet, but jeez, the first was pretty linear.

Yup. Mafia I was an open world game where the world wasn't meant for giving you countless options in-mission, but rather for the purpose of immersing you into the gameworld and making it an atmospheric experience, and they nailed it. Seems Mafia II is doing the same thing and they just missed the point.

The fuck?

How are typical pc games any less linear, or short for that matter, compared to typical console games? I mean, the answer is they aren't, but go ahead and try to argue otherwise anyways

Played the first one on the pc and it's one of my all-time favourite videogames. For some reason I haven't really felt the hype with this game. Will definitely buy down the line though, just not day 1.
