New race, the Drell
Save files will be transferable, choices from ME will impact ME2 universeThane is a character in Mass Effect 2. He is a drell assassin, rumored to be the most skilled in the galaxy. Unlike most assassins, who prefer to shoot their targets with a sniper rifle, Thane likes to go up close and kill his target personally.
He is first confronted by Shepard on Illium. Here Thane is on a mission to assassinate Nassana Dantius. He is confirmed to be a squad member.
No ME1 squad members in your party?Anytime we have a plot or a character or situation in Mass Effect 2, we think about what you did, potentially, in the first game that might affect said plot or character or situation in the second. We can look at each variable and dynamically change what happens in the moment. It ranges from small things like, by way of example, Conrad Verner was a fan of Commander Shepards that you met in the first game, and its like you meet this guy in an alley and you can be nice to him or you can be a jerk to him, and at the time you might have been thinking of it as just a trite role-playing convention, good-guy bad-guy, and thats that.
Jump forward two years. Now youre playing Mass Effect 2, and oh my god, whos this, its Conrad Verner! And based on what youve done, you realize that while the moment in the first game maybe seemed throwaway, now Conrads back and involved in another plot in a game youre playing two years later and what you did two years ago is meaningfully affecting whats happening.
Thats a small example.
Casey Hudson said:All the squad members that you pick up are completely new characters. Some of them from races that have never been in your squad before.
It's going to be larger squad, a lot more varied and very, very different kinds of characters. Everyone that you can take with you is a different character from before.
Too much info about the end of the game (massive spoilers below)clarified later said:In some cases, it is possible that squad members from ME1 could end up in your ME2 squad. Again, we're trying to approach this with respect for the characters. Nobody is being clumsily shoehorned in or casually written out. All surviving squad members are at least present as NPCs with important story roles.
Casey Hudson said:When you get to the very end of the story in Mass Effect 2, you will get one of a wide variety of climactic and satisfying endings. Depending on how prepared you were, your ending may involve Shepard making the ultimate sacrifice to accomplish the mission.
Part of what makes the final mission dangerous in a more profound way is that each squad member could potentially die a real, story-based death during that mission as well.
YES new game +After finishing ME2 can I take my character and restart a new playthrough preserving that characters gear and abilities?
Mass Effect lead designer said:The short answer is no.
The reason is progression. We have been working very hard to make sure we design the abilities system to offer smooth progression into ME3 from ME2. Allowing double progression on characters makes that almost impossible. We have to have reasonable knowledge about where a character could end up finishing all content on a playthrough. We also want to offer choice of character build within specific classes.
We replaced that feature with playing after you were done because it preserves progression and allows for smoother downloading of PRC.

Shorter elevator rides
Ray Muzyka said:We have a completely new system to handle transitions between areas that speeds the load times and turns the loads themselves into part of the game experience. It's one of many points of feedback we've heard and directly responded to in enhancing the gameplay in Mass Effect 2.
Impressions/previews (minor spoilers):

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/mass-effect-2-hands-on?page=1Eurogamer said:Firstly, squad control should be easier and more accurate, with mappable d-pad actions giving finer control. Secondly, the radial menus have been improved, with ammo types now selectable here rather than from within the fiddly inventory system.
I'm put in charge of a soldier-class Shepard, meaning that Biotic and Tech support options are limited to those of the squad - activated in much the same way as the first game. There aren't any new powers to see at gamescom, but there is new weapon type in addition to the already-confirmed heat-seeking missiles: the heavy pistol. Work that one out for yourselves. More weapon classes have been confirmed, although specifics are still in the realm of speculation.
. . .
BioWare has made clear that this is still an RPG, and all of those elements remain, but it's undeniable that the core experience has shifted toward being more accessible, less dense. Cover is easier to use, and more effective, with a Gears-style touch of the A button snapping Shepard to it. Holding A rushes the Commander out from behind cover and sprints him forward, adding immediacy and poise to storming positions. The new context-specific hit-zones also contribute to this, with enemies no longer flying backwards in a uniform fashion no matter where they're hit, but responding accurately to targeted shots.
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/991/991756p1.htmlIGN said:With less pauses in the action, Mass Effect 2 plays much more like a straight shooter when playing as the soldier class.
Med packs have been done away with entirely for Mass Effect 2. Rather than having to heal yourself and your party members constantly, an auto-regeneration system has been put into place. Take cover for a few seconds and your health will go back to full.
. . .
Speaking of streamlined controls, the way you deliver commands to your two party members has received a few tweaks that make them more effective allies than ever before. Their commands are still mapped to the d-pad, but now you can direct each individually.
. . .
For Mass Effect 2, you won't be equipping weapons with different types of ammo. Instead, you can get powers that will infuse an entire clip with a boost. It recharges pretty quickly, so it wouldn't be out of the question to infuse your bullets with different types of boosts non-stop.
Synopsis (minor spoilers):
---
Mass Effect 2 takes place two years after the conclusion of Mass Effect. With the Reaper invasion stopped and Saren and the geth defeated, Commander Shepard learns that entire human colonies are mysteriously vanishing. Teaming up with the human supremacist organization Cerberus in his investigations, Shepard will also journey across the galaxy to recruit "up to a dozen of the galaxy's most dangerous operatives" to face this new threat. Locations include the asari colony world of Illium, and Omega, a space mining station in the Terminus Systems which harbors the worst of galactic society.
