3. PSP would be in a fairly close second. Stores have almost as many of them as DS. And they are starting to get much more prominent store positioning. Both Wanpaku and Book-net have moved the units to the front of the store.

Why is this exactly?

I would assume because PSP is a hot item right now. And they are probably getting ready for the new Monster Hunter game. Just guesses though.

What was the preorder of Halo 3 in your store ? Around 500 ?
It seems that SSBB pre-order is underperforming my expectation (350-400), but since it is only slightly (10%), it is ok.

Is the GTA IV preorder only opened recently ?
Wow at the GOW : CoO preorder. Mini sex QTE (game) might be helping this (especially on PSP)

What else can you expect ? The series have a new person, Apollo, instead of Phoenix Wright. How can you expect people to pre-order in droves for this ? I think most people will "wait and see", or just do impulse buying.

Disappointing PS3 sales tbh. I was hoping that they'd be in the 30k range. 23k is quite a drop out of nowhere, especially with it being the second week of DMC4.

Actually, it's right in line with the series. We only had 5 for Trials and Tribulations.

The last count I had for Halo 3 was 508. It's the most there ever was for any game in the store. SSBB will make it to the 350-400 mark before it's released.

GTA IV's been going on for a long time now, since it was originally scheduled for October 2007.

GOW on the PSP is so huge because of the demo. Customers like getting "free" stuff.

Has no PEINS
Man ever since the PSP launched I've had this feeling that the PS3 would follow right in its exact same footsteps and, barring piracy, it has so far. The use of the XMB, the frequent updates with useful features being added, controversial media format, initial failure in the marketplace, very poor image problem, very poor software sales, great games that nobody seems to notice or care about, the list goes on and on. However, if the current PSP revival is any indication of what to expect from the PS3 down the line, I'll be a very happy gamer

Thanks Vinnk. I think it's not really a surprise that the otakus and the typical japanese Winning Eleven fan don't see much interest in this very unique and late Wii version...
But on the other hand, if there is one demographic that I think could possibly make this game a relative success, it seems to me like it would be the the football fan, who doesn't normally buy the traditional football games, and at the same time isn't totally averse to the concept of gaming, or even preferably IS already a gamer.
It's just a theory, but I believe that if the game manages to catch the attention of the type of potential buyer that matches these criteria, then I think we could have something interesting here...
However, as for whether or not they will market the game that way or be met with success...I guess we will know that very soon.

By the way, seems like there is a rumour floating around that states that the game's first shipment will total 80k...If confirmed, that would be rather conservative from Konami, wouldn't it ?

HK-47 said:
No they are not. First off, many of those franchises are going to be the first of thier kind of the PS3, which is different than the BT series which already has 2 iterations on the DS. MGS4 will more fresh and new than BT 3

Second they target different people. Many of the people buying BT are very casual, and would probably not see a reason to get BT 3 since they already have BT 1 or 2. There is no hardcore fanbase, no storyline to continue, so there is not much pull for people to come back. Why do you think Nintendo has been reluctant to make Wii Sports 2? Where is Nintendogs 2?
I was going to reply to your first post but anyways. BT 3 giving diminished returns is really misleading, considering the budget and how much it sells and already has sold (the series), they'll still be making a shit load of money. No hardcore casual fanbase? Dude have you seen BT 2 first week numbers? Performing well above most so called core-games. Wii =! DS, Nintendogs 2 could be coming for all we know, or Nintencats.

Edit: I don't have much faith for WE Wii after Vinnk's report..

I'm surprised to see Mario Kart already up to 30. Has it been given a release date?

I don't know. If I were Konami that's about what I'd release. After seeing Dewy tank hardcore, they must be a bit shellshocked. Frankly, this late in the year, 80K would be pretty good for a soccer game on any platform (when WE PSP sold around that number it was big news). If Konami can sell all of that first shipment and the system is enjoyed by the gamers who buy it's an accomplishment. Then next year Konami can ship the Wii version at the same time as the other consoles and possibly do some good sales.

This late in the year with a brand new control system, expecting it to sell more than 80k in the first week seems a tad unrealistic.

Still if the system is as great as everyone says it is, this title could have quite long legs. It depends how open casual sports gamers are to a rather complex system.

Ezduo said:
Wow, the PSP outsold the DS again? What's going on exactly?

Simply the DS has almost reached the saturation point (at 21 millions). With this price, sales cannot go up without a price cut and maybe a bundle with Dragon Quest IX.

PSP is selling not because of its games (only 4 games in the entire top 50).

Stumpokapow

If the DS sells 65k per week every week in the year, it will have sold 3.38 million over the year. In other words, as much as the PS2 sold per year close to its prime. Now, it might be the case that the "lost" sales could be made up with a small price cut and that this will end up being more economical than leaving the price where it is, but they're certainly not "in need" of a price cut.

For some reason I was expecting Konami to put out an unreasonably high shipment (in any case, too high compared to my own expectations), which is probably why this rumoured number struck me as surprisingly conservative. But as you put it, it seems like they indeed found a fairly reasonable middle ground... Obviously, we will get to see if this number was that reasonable in the end, but it's true that considering how desperately low my expectations for this game's japanese sales are, I can say that I have no problem agreeing with you when you say that the sole fact of selling out this first shipment would be an accomplishment by itself.
Still if the system is as great as everyone says it is, this title could have quite long legs. It depends how open casual sports gamers are to a rather complex system.
Indeed, and this is probably when the efforts of the production team to make this game completely accessible despite the entirely new control scheme would start to show. And obviously, we will also get to evaluate the efficiency of the marketing team's efforts to spread the word that the game is more accessible and less complex than it seems.

Yeah, I know it ends at #48, I think it has to do with Rockman 2 and Pokemon MD2 since they are combining 2 SKUs in them.

I'll do some cumulative totals now (and update this post in the process I suppose).

EDIT1: (thanks to dabra) It seems they deleted Mario & Sonic Wii for some unknown reason (sold 124,711) and I suppose another title was also deleted from the top (DS Literature Collection?)

EDIT2: A few titles with updated LTDs:

So through the end of January, Tales of Innocence is at 210,697, Super Robot Wars OG Gaiden is at 269,063, and Star Ocean: First Departure is at 187,629. Not too shabby all around, honestly.

Just a few titles needed totals since most of them appeared on the latest Top30 from January with their totals fully updated here:

No need to update the top50 then.

But some titles that went under the radar had still some sales. Here we go, LTDs:

PSP Star Ocean: The First Departure (187,629)
PS2 Super Robot Taisen OG Gaiden (269,063)
PS2 Naruto: Shippu-den Narutimate Accel 2 (180,514)
NDS Ryusei no Rockman 2 (combined) (268,381)
WII Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles (250,225)
PS3 Gran Turismo 5 Prologue Blu-ray Disc Version (196,082)
PS2 Sengoku Basara 2 Heroes (210,025)
NDS Tales of Innocence 210,697)
NDS Nep League DS (92,833)
PSP Yusha no Kuse ni Namaiki da. (96,934)
NDS Kosoku Card Battle Card Hero (97,432)
PS2 Jikkyo Powerful Pro Yakyu 14 Ketteiban (84,035)

I'm a tad disappointed in Card Hero. I was expecting the standard Nintendo B-level sales of 120k-150k. I'm sure it'll squeak that out over the next little while, but my expectation was that it'd squeak 200k after having settled around 120-150k.

Very happy that Star Force 2 bombed compared with Star Force. Capcom needs to give Mega Man a break, and the place to start would be fewer sub-par spinoffs. Plus, the multi-SKU strategy needs to be repudiated as much as possible and Capcom's one of the worst offenders.

Looking at the month charts it's amazing that the resudual drag up of certain titles is still in effect. All that promotion and sales making Prof Layton 2 in the top 10 have resulted in great extra sales for the original title. I can well see all three games in the trilogy hitting the monthly charts at the same time.

Just think if the first game got a "best hits" type re-release right before Layton 3. Sales would be amazing. Of course it won't happen, it is still selling plenty well in its original price point.

Would be a good idea to push a new IP though but I am certain that Square will just use the PSN for the demo whenever it hits, if it ever hits.

Star Force after 9 weeks: 374K (125K per SKU)
Star Force 2 after 9 weeks: 268K (134K per SKU)

Based on this data, they need to come out with Star Force 3 this December and go back to three SKUs to get more easy money.

GT5P isn't doing that bad.
Sony's expectations were only 60k more for the disc (unless that was just 1st week).

f@luS

More than a member.
200K for GT5P disc only , in japan is everything but a failure. I would even call it a success. It means 300K imho for japan only. Easily million seller, maybe much more for this , is quite big.

Indeed, what the hell? 200k for disc sales are good. With Warhawk, PSN sales were far higher than disc sales, so I'm curious to see what the ratio is like for GT5P. The game will be a huge hit in Europe for sure, and will probably see healthy sales in NA. If it gets even close a million worldwide in disc sales only, that's a pretty huge success IMO.
