Followup to Pureauthor's "what will be the next DS game to sell 100k?" question:

May 1st: Emblem of Gundam, Hitman Reborn 92923982
May 15th: Luminous Arc 2 Will
May 22nd: Glory of Heracles VI
May 29th: ENGLISH OF THE DEAD, Front Misssion 2089, Super Robot Wars OG Infinite Frontier
June 5th: 99 Stories (99 short horror adventure games)
June 26th: Daigasso Band Brothers DX, The Tower DS, Derby Stallion DS, Bleach 3rd Phantom, Disgaea DS

Those are the big DS releases for the next two months, either in terms of likely critical acclaim or likely sales. There are a few licenced games out there that I'm not sure how big the animes they are licenced from are, and tons of non-game stuff that could break 100k but we have no idea which ones will or won't.

... and 5 installments of DS Simple Series :lol :lol

Are we talking about lifetime?

Gundam, LA2, SRW OG, Bleach definitely will. Disgaea....maybe, but doubt it. Glory, Hitman, English, FM, 99 stories, Tower, Derby = no way. Band Brothers...how did the first one sell?

*edit, didn't see 1st day sales. Gundam...wtf are those numbers!?! Ok, it won't hit 100k and maybe I'll take Bleach out as well after those numbers.

Gundam's not going anywhere near 100k. Luminous Arc 2... maybe. It depends on whether it's better than the first one, which managed around 70k. I very highly doubt Disgaea will. I don't think there's any kind of a market for that thing on the DS. Why are you so sure Glory of Herakles won't?

Band Bros. will, I imagine. The first one sold 164k.

I agree that Front Mission and English of the Dead aren't getting anything close to 100k.

I pretty much agree with all these assessments. I included the obvious no-100k like The Tower and English of the Dead on the list because they're notable releases even if they don't end up being notable in terms of sales.

Glory of Heracles I think will hit 100k eventually, but I don't think it'll be based on the IP. No new installments since the SFC days + new developer + low advertising pretty much means no one is going to pick it up on pedigree, and I highly doubt the VC release of Glory of Heracles IV/V (there's a naming convention issue with the series) will do much to spur sales.

first day sales

Link's Crossbow Training 36k ( 150 shipped )
Emblem of Gundam DS 13k
Hitman REBORN DS 12k
family of professional baseball stadium Wii 4600 ( 10% of shipped copies )

Selling LCT for 4000 Yen is an idiotic decision. I hope this game has a price collapse, and became 2000 Yen (more or less the same price as US's $20 price point), and teach Nintendo a lesson they should never forget or repeat (just like it is idiotic to release Big Brain Academy at $ 50 pricepoint, while the game is only roughly 2800 - 3800 Yen in Japan).

Increased price (consumer gouging) FTL.

Basically original IP (yeah it's sequel but how many years has it been and do the Japanese care? I doubt it) + small-dev.
Seems like ASH, Soma Bringer all over again. I can't see it doing better than either of those.

I think a better question than what upcoming DS games will break 100k, is "is there any system in Japan left where most non-shovelware will at least break 100k?"

PS2

Most games people cared about might not have hit 100k first day or weekend but lifetime...sure.
PS2 software. Surely missing sales accumulated off the charts means some games have reached 100K that aren't displayed here... but missing low sales also means not every PS2 game even makes the list, so the ratios might hold. *shrug* 1/4 seems to have been the case for PS2 historically, as well.

Going by that, about 1/4 of PS2 games hit 100K. If most (let's say half) of non-shovelware reached 100K, that'd mean at least half of the PS2 library was shovelware. But even if we jet down to the lower half of the list where sales are a few dozen thousand (if that) there's plenty of non-shovelware to be found.

"Hey!", someone might say, "That list of PS2 games includes a lot of The Best rereleases and such, and thus presents a skewed view of the total number of PS2 releases as well as fails to give each game its fair due for what it sold among multiple SKUS!" True; just not a good way to work around that.

Actually, of the data we've got, DS has a higher percentage of games to reach 100K. 137 of 345, so about 40%.

Since WiiFit and PS3 are quite different and targets differnt audience (atleast in my opinion) i havnt really seen the resemblance in this comparison, thats why i made that graph with MHP2G VS WiiFit comparison earlier. However, serious WiiFit VS PS3 comparisons, i.e like the graph you made a while ago, those i think are just fine, i have no problem with those comparisons. When you said that you were comparing the balance board only i realized that your graph actually shows something that is a valid point, that developers can possibly can a PS3 project in favor of the Wiiboard due to simular userbase and that WiiFit (balance board) seems more popular.

Well, I don't know that I'd go that far just yet. The WiiBo only has 2 games for it so far. Even if/when it does outsell the PS3, I'd want to see the sales of more games before I would say it's more 'popular'.

Family Ski's sales are pretty telling though.

Man Nintendo is stingy..They're one of the biggest companies in Japan for christs sake..

They should put some advertising in MK:Wii..Japanese people infest online like the plague! (not that thats a bad thing..I just play continental)

ASH actually did break 100k, though the path it took to get there certainly wasn't a pleasant one. As for Soma Bringer... for as long as we were getting numbers for it, it was tracking almost identically to Baten Kaitos (just a tad bit over it, actually), and Baten Kaitos reached 120k in off-chart sales. I imagine Soma Bringer has done so as well.

So Blue Dragon sold better than GT5P? Wow, I´m surprised.

It hasn't. Blue Dragon's numbers are dead. There should be no further increase to them, since they've had "updates" that already showed it wasn't adding anymore copies to its total. GT5P's numbers are not dead. Not a ton of life left but not dead. It's pretty much statistical noise either way at this point, though. :p

Sorry, i should have defined "more popular". What i ment with "more popular" is how its selling from week to week. I was only thinking of that when i said "more popular", not software wise. I dont think any big title games like i.e Resident Evil would be canceled on PS3/360 in favor of making it for the Wiiboard, but smaller "unknown" 3rd party games, i guess it is possible. I.e:

A: Lets make a driving game for the PS3 with a budget of 1 million dollars.
B: Maybe we should try to make another type game for the Wiiboard instead, maybe we can make more money there.
A: Ye, that might be, lets make a game for the Wiiboard instead.

But ye, as you said, there are only 2 games for the Wiiboard so far so its abit early to say how much more software in general it would sell compared on the PS3. I dont think we'll see alot of PS3 games move to Wiiboard either, but this was just one example. I'll guess we'll see relatively soon enough how things turn out :)

Well, they´ll end up in the same ballpark then. And this surprises me, as I always thought the GT series to be a sales driver in Japan. I would have expected it to do at least the 350k the other sellers on the PS3 made.

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying. An overpriced demo can't be a system seller.

My point was that although GT5p is certainly not GT5, GT5p is part of a long chain of software that ought to have been more successful but was not, representing a consistent pattern of software sales decline from last generation.

GT4p sold 750,000. I don't want to get into the semantic and ultimately subjective debate over whether or not a given piece of software is in real terms a "system seller", but in terms of software, GT5p does not bode well for GT5 based on the transition from GT4p to GT4.

Online DL hasn't taken in account yet.

... and it never will be and I don't think it's productive to mount an "invincible defence" by trying to integrate it into discussions. It's sort of like if a person brings up dozens and dozens of high profile PC bombs as evidence that various genres of games that used to be PC-only are now firmly in console territory. The response is typically "yeah but the numbers don't take into account <x, y, z, digital distribution, sales in estonia, whatever>".

Between Steam (virtually no numbers), XBLA (downloads including freebies), and VC (cash value with no numbers or breakdowns), we've seen that publishers have no intention on being honest about their DD sales, so I'm not sure why we try to take them into account.

I don't think that GT5 proper will be nearly as successful as the PS2 games, but it is worth noting that GT5P retailed at 2000 yen higher than GT4P. Gran turismo fans may have bee more willing to buy a 3000 yen demo than a 5000 yen demo. Where GT4P accounted for 75% of GT4's sales, I'd guess that GT5P will be closer to 50%.

My prediction for GT5 at this moment is 400k (similar to HSG5). IF the PS3 hardware situation improves in the future, it may be a little higher, but that seems unlikely at present.

Well this is the first major franchise that got released on both formats, it's natural for people to be curious how sales are divided (I know I am at least).
Sony did share a few bits of individual title online sales (even if limited to one territory) so who knows, maybe we get lucky and see more one day.

Of course GTP5 will keep on selling online well after retail is off the shelves, so even if we had the numbers it would take time before they would give the proper perspective.
