Media Create Sales 5/19 - 5/25

Eh... they could've gotten those sales just doing a quickie PS2 Sakura Taisen 6. 120k's not shameful, but c'mon... you really think SEGA's happy?!

Next test, Initial D Extreme Stage!

I'll never understand why people call Advance Wars an SRPG...
It's not really imo, though AW2 and AWDS both have some degree of dynamic stat leveling for COs (and DOR has it for units). I guess technically it could apply... and really, it's not too weird to lump it and Fire Emblem in the same genre.

I'd call them both strategy games first though...

I agree with you. Warcraft III, Heroes of Might and Magic, Warlords, and (to a lesser extent) Civilization 3+4 all had units that leveled and no one refers to those games as SRPGs.

In my opinion, a game has to have some freedom to choose what you will do next to warrant the RPG part of SRPG. Even if it is simply the option to go back to past battle maps to level up (or do a side quest) in between story events. Fire Emblem gives you zero freedom to explore. Similar to the campaign modes of almost every strategy game in history, you simply move from one map to the next.

Well, that series is dead (SakuTai) - I think a 'quickie' ST4 spoiled much of that goodwill the series had.

And Initial D might be on its way out as well - Wangan Midnight is kicking its ass all over the arcade (but they don't have those solid arcade conversions - is that because Genki still has the console license?)

Sega's waiting for US/Euro reception of Valkyria before deciding if they're happy with it. If it bombs in those two territories, well, that series is dead too. Overworks will probably not get to do a Skies 2 and instead get stuck doing Sonic Riders 3 with ex-UGA. Hua hua hua. :(

Well, Wangan PS3 can't be too encouraging then....

Why would Skies 2 be dependent on Valkyira? Not like it's ever been in R&D for PS3. ;)

Besdies, ex-UGA already works with NowPro on the Riders games. :p

How did the first Skies of Arcadia sell (both on the Dreamcast and on the Gamecube)? Despite the fact that a large portion of Gaf would herald it the second coming of Christ as they greedily rip through its packaging on the day of its released, is there any guarantee that Skies of Arcadia 2 would sell? Even on the Wii?

Wasn't Initial-D kind of a bomb on PS2 in the first place? And that was at the height of its arcade popularity IIRC...

Maybe bank on the tail market outselling the first 2 weeks of sales over the next few months? I wouldn't call it a glowing success, but for a new IP, it seems to be doing pretty damn well. If it were an established IP, then well..yeah...

Just doing a quick search for games with the word "Initial" in my database, I only find this one from 2003. Was at 267K last we saw. Doesn't seem too bad, though I've really got no context as far as expectations or how popular it was at the arcade.

From the old thread:

That's interesting. The PSP was consistently over 20K. The PS3 is having a bitch of a time breaking 10. How many weeks are there of the PS3 < 10K?

8K first week. No updates after that, though.

PS1 Initial D - 122K
The one you posted (BEST) - 80K
PSP Initial D: Street Stage - 105K

PS1 and PSP had ~50K first week, so I think that's a reasonable expectation for the PS3 version. ~100K LTD (like the PS1 and PSP) also seems reasonable.

Wow, there's still a bit of a gap between Famitsu and MC PSP numbers, there's nearly a 25k difference combining the past 2 weeks.

I'd say that Sega's lost money over ST5 so they're unwilling to put money in a quickie ST6.

jarrod said:
Well, Wangan PS3 can't be too encouraging then....

Two things:

- Wangan console/handheld versions (there's a PSP one) has been deved by Genki from pretty much the beginning based on their 'Highway Battle' games which have the usual trait of 'SP' battle where the player has to be in front of the other to drain SP from the other player - this has proved popular to some extent (eg. Tokyo Highway series was a niche hit on the DC, for instance). For now Wangan console (incl. PS3) will continue to be deved by Genki.

- Wangan arcade is Namco, and despite the fact that they borrow a few elements from Wangan console (note: Namco's the license holder), they also borrow elements from Initial D, which was a surprise hit from Sega (by following the advantage system rather than the 'SP' system Genki uses). A few more changes (eg. more traffic) and the Namco touch catapults the title to stardom, smashing Initial D's popularity all over the place that no one really wants to play ID4 compared to Wangan 3.

Hence, what's disappointing for Wangan game fans who've come from the arcade is that they might have expected a Wangan console game to mirror the arcade (like Sega's Initial D). Except they get a mix of Wangan arcade and Genki. While this might sound bad, at least what it does is that it doesn't cannablise the arcade game as consumers now know and expect the console and arcade games to be different.

Referring to my earlier point, I'd be surprised if Sega drops money into big projects anymore, since it does seem that the games that turn out good sell badly and the games that turn out bad sell well (not all the time, but if you whack a license on it, eg. Iron Man, or Hulk...)

Skies 2 is more wishful thinking then anything else by me - I would be, since Skies characters are cameoed in Valkyria.

ex-UGA/NowPro on Riders, well, that's not very inspiring either, but people will buy it for the Sonic brand name (not necessarily in Japan).

Nectaris is a turn based strategy game, but the moment that you add cutscenes between battles, character development, and story lines, you cross into SRPG territory...by the Japanese definition.

So the mighty PSP is dying. Nintendo is finally taking over the Japanese market.

Edit: Uh... was there Phoenix Wright Day last week? Are those all $20 versions of the game or something?

Umm no. Starcraft has a story but its not a real time RPG. Same for Advance Wars

Also it can be either wut or wat. Stupid thing to argue about

No, a SRPG is a game that have characteristics of both strategy and RPG games. Usually a no linear strategy game (you can choose to go to different places to battle) with characters that level up (and carry the levels gained between battles) would be called a SRPG. Advance Wars doesn't have that. It is just a turn based strategy game.

Advance Wars and Fire Emblem are neither SRPGs or TBSs.

They are puzzle games.

I can see it in Fire Emblem's case, but Advance Wars? A few of the maps are like that, but the multiplayer maps are pure strategy.
