Zelda is an evergreen launch title for the switch much like many of such titles on the 3DS it won't dry up simply because Mario Kart and Splatoon launch because they serve an entirely different genres and sets of users who likely won't buy the console just for one game. Even a year down the line if your picking up the switch you'll probably end up picking up Zelda too at one point. We'll see in a few years down the line but I think it'll be far more competitive than your expecting.

That's why I'm personally expecting Zelda BotW to have such a good performance in Japan. It's actually a title that compliments the multiplayer titles which are coming out during the Switch's first 6 months. You could buy Zelda with MK8D if that's when you are buying the Switch, buy it with Arms or buy it with Splatoon 2. I predicted around 1/3 of Switch owners to buy it in 2017. Personally I'm expecting it to get a bump when MK8D hits and another smaller boost when Arms releases and a really strong performance around the Splatoon 2 launch and summer holidays.

As you said it's an evergreen title for the Switch and the first such experience on a handheld device.

Now that I think more about it, MK8D may actually boost sales of Zelda for Switch. Having a popular system seller sometimes help other older games on the system get some attention.
It's not like Zelda's minds are will be gone by then either, so I do expect it to hold on and maybe en increase slightly when MK8D launches.

Nice hold for Switch! I do wonder if it can keep up a few more weeks before Mario Kart comes out. PS4 baseline looks like 25k in slow weeks? Not bad but since 3DS is hovering around the same number it's quite impressive for a 6 year old handheld.

Vita looks like it won't survive that much longer. I think this is its last year before it "dies" and sells around 2-3k a week

Looking at the chart in last week's thread, most recent consoles other than the 3DS had fallen to around 20k per week at this point. Nice to see the Switch still holding.

Its still selling the only question on whether it holds up is if nintendo can ship enough stock, i imagine maybe 2 more 40k weeks with then 80k+ for mario kart launch

03./04. [3DS] Mario Sports Superstars <SPT> (Nintendo) {2017.03.30} (¥4.980) - 18.765 / 51.181 (-42%)

Better second week than expected, after the lackluster launch. Repeat of Mario Party: Star Rush?

According to Amazon Italy, ARMS is releasing on May 2nd.

I think we can ignore the Splatoon 2 release date too

Well, about the August 18th date...

I think it will desappear from the charts from early May on, but the Switch version will come up again (with low sales, of course) once the Story DLC will be released and detailed (and we'll discover that new dungeon/story content in the narrative of the game)

Early May... lol During Golden Week, no way.
It will be on the charts until Obon at least.

I really wonder how much the Vita will sell next year.

I recall reading somewhere that Japan still believes in the Vita.

That should be "Sony still believes in Vita in Japan". It's very much a PR statement, and as you can see Vita is rapidly declinging YoY, so I would very much doubt it will do reasonable numbers next year. It is the second biggest platformers at the moment, of course, and that's why Sony still believes in it, not because it has so much growth potential.
I think Nintendo is saving some systems for the MK8 launch.
I wonder if it matters whether you drop the same amount of extra units into the channel at a steady pace each week or keep a baseline and drop a large quantity during release week? Is there a marketing/economic reason to prefer one over the other?

Switch to catch wii u on mario kart week?

Switch to catch wii u on mario kart week?

That seems like almost a guarantee. Two more weeks of steady 40k sales and then the MK8D week, which likely sees much higher sales, should be more than enough to reach 800k, more than the Wii U had in the same time period.
It would probably catch up to the 3DS on Mario Kart week.
Hmm, for that it would need to sell roughly 315k in the next three weeks. Assuming 40k in the first two weeks, the MK8D week must see 235k units sold. That seems steep, is that a reasonable possibility?

Really feels like the calm before the storm. The switch is still selling out but is another couple of weeks from getting a big restock it looks like. Waiting to see what happens when the switch gets some decent supply, want to see some big HW numbers (and also how that affects the SW).

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
Probably counting every episode separately like Square Enix does now.

Oh, that makes his "MH5" position make sense too now. If it includes a G release. Only if MH skips any portable version as well, but I'm sure Sony's already locked up that exclusive in his mind.

You should wait for the week MK8D releases. It aligns with a holiday in Japan, so expectations are Nintendo will ship big in that week.

I certainly wasn't expecting the 3DS to still be selling better this year than last year. Wonder how long it will last.

It's interesting too. It's basically 2016 holiday titles (Pokemon, Mario Maker 3DS) + Monster Hunter XX now and Dragon Quest Monsters 3 Professional right? That's... kind of surprising.

Nah that's too ambitious, couple of weeks to a month after should be a lock though

I really doubt that.

MK7 launch week lead to 200K 3DS being sold. I think if Nintendo maintain 35-50K supply until MK8D launch they could easily move a similar number of Switches. It might not overtake it but it should clear 800K.
Obviously I could be wrong and Nintendo and retailers could under-stock or overstock for the MK8D launch. Personally I think it's mainly up to retailers to decide and if pre-orders continue to outperform MK7 and MK8 on the Wii U I don't see why retailers wouldn't want more stock aligning with the launch of Mario Kart on the Switch.

Is it safe to say that the Switch is not another WiiU yet? I mean, living here in Japan there is tangible excitement for this product totally unlike the WiiU. But is there some benchmark that people are waiting for? Or will it be more months of "too soon to tell"?

I dont think nintendo will have 200k to send retail at the moment but 100k seems possible to me amd at the moment i dont think the retailers whims are an issue with it selling out within hours every time they'll order whatever nintendo wants to send them right now

Well considering that it's successor to 3DS no one sane expected it to do WiiU numbers. That would had meant pretty much Nintendo exiting hw business if their handheld line had collapsed to WiiU numbers too.

I think it will first has to outsell Wii U launch announced before some people are willing to consider it. Personally, I think it will be much better, and your experience in Japan is a nice bit of observation to illustrate the vibe many have, so I think we'll be looking at a successful system.
