Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain multiplayer reveal on IGN this Thursday

Wow I will be invading maps all day!!!! Basically this means a near limitless amount of "bases" to stealth through. Every persons set up will be different. Plus who knows what the actual PvP will be like.

Game of the forever.

This looks like the most unrealistic MGS made. They really went ham on this one.

Might be fun to play but all that cardbox gameplay and ballooning people out in the air... :/

You tell me which MGS was ever "realistic" and I'll explain why that isn't the case after I've finished laughing.

I think he means Fultoning everything and everyone and cardboard box supermodels completely devaluate the serious tone of the game and it ruins the immersion.

Which of course is true. But there's no way there will be infine Fulton balloons available like in the demo. At least, not untill way later in the game. And as for the carboard box - just don't use it. I know I won't.

Thankfully, theres still a couple GAME designers out there who are more concerned about making their games fun, ins of being obsessed with simply copying reality.
besides, cardboard and fulton aside, core gameplay and AI are much more realistic than ever

I honestly don't think we'll get Metal Gear Online, like it was designed in the last two installments.

I think the online part of The Phantom Pain will revolve around infiltrating the bases.

The Fulton is a simplification (to facilitate gameplay flow) of a real world extraction device. EDIT: Think of it in terms of hunting mechanics in MGS3. When you tranq an animal it automatically appears in a little cage. That doesn't really break the immersion, does it...?

I'm sure you're aware that the cardboard box with a supermodel on is a combination of two/three gameplay mechanics (box, magazine, locker posters) that have been series staples for years. Why combining these elements suddenly makes this the "most unrealistic" MGS yet, I will never understand.

ToraShiro, a Konami Rep/Community Manager, explicitly said that MB infiltration won't replace MGO.

We need the past sentence Adding to every MGS V related OP.

C'mon now. I've stated in my post why I felt they went overboard. And truth be told, laugh all you want, I'm entitled to think it looked ridiculous.

Of course you are.

The cardboard isn't exactly new. Porn magazines and cardboard boxes were in previous MG games and, at the end of the day, the "sex box" is a combination of those two series staples.

With regards to the airlift, instead of having to drag people for miles like in PO, they made a nifty game mechanic based on a simplified but real world extraction device. Snake eats rations for instant health, BB automatically caged tranqed animals etc. It's a similar principle.

That's the thing though. It being a combination of those two, is what makes it a bit too unrealistic. Much more reasonable to think that a soldier would fall for a magazine that's laying around or be tricked by an ordinary box, than an upright cardboard box with a picture on it. I personally don't mind though, especially if it's through end-game r&d. Just a means of messing around kind of like the stealth gadget was.

Fultoning every soldier takes away from having to hide enemies that you've taken out. I guess that's fine as well, since they'll probably have a limit on it.

I am incredibly bummed by that multiplayer mode.

Sure the old MGO was more or less a traditional competitive mode (though the stealth aspect was interesting) but this looks just like a chore to me.

People can come in my base and start fultoning shit? And everybody uses Big Boss? Looks very lame to me.

EDIT: This is based on the trailer i saw on GameTrailers, i don't know if there's more.

EDIT2: I saw the toraShiro comment about this not replacing MGO.. so this is just an extra little thing? Hopefully it won't be a pain in the ass.. "motherbase is under attack" every 2 seconds, with people fultoning all you stuff.

It is not replacing MGO.

There's that word again.

What's realistic about professional soldiers frotting themselves silly at the sight of a woman in a discarded magazine or poster...?

EDIT: ...over and above a raunchy picture on a box.

Realism is a not always a good answer to game design, gameplay and game mechanics. That's the main problem that some devs have. Fun isn't always realistic.

Personally I don't think they'll sell it (MGO3) separately and risk losing potential DLC sales on an online only game in a series a most people buy for the single player.
It's more likely for someone to play the MP included in TPP and if they have fun decide they're going to buy DLC to elongate their enjoyment than for someone to pick up MGO separate because they enjoyed TPP. In my opinion at least.

Another thought is that Konami can't possibly be ignorant enough to think most people would be okay with them releasing a prologue, the full experience and the online mode separately. That would test the limits of even my patience, I can only imagine the internet backlash if that were the case.

Edit: They might do a separate release as an option though.

Are there any specifics on how base infiltration works yet? For example is our base saved on a server so it can be invaded at anytime or is it only at risk for invasion while we are at the base setting things up? I would hate to build it up and come back from work and have everything stolen from me.

I'm pretty sure we set up a Forward Operating Base & that's what can be infiltrated. At least that's how it seems based off that GC video.

first time i seen this, wow it looks really really creative. crapping horse, sexy cardboard to distract guards, Fulton a jeep and blowing up a helicopter with it!? spy vs spy, design your mgs level mp! sounds like crazy fun!

knowing konami/kojima, the final game may not be as cool as their demo, but im impressed that they could get this level of gameplay on ps3!

can't wait for MGSV and TW3 on PC.
it has been awhile since i looked forward to a game, not to mention 2!
gaming is not dead, huzzah!

How does the Phantom Cigar work in this multiplayer mode?

EDIT: I mean, how does it affect the enemy player? Where can you choose which player's base to infiltrate and does that player know that somebody's walking around in his base? I don't get it, yet^^

I thought that the phantom cigar was just there for style. Boss will pull it out while he is waiting for time to pass.

No one gets it yet. I was wondering this too, but no info has been released.

Nah, I meant how the base's owner's time gets affected when you use the cigar. His time has to pass, too, otherwise it doesn't make sense^^

Hope you can opt out of this aspect of the game. Didn't like invasions in Watch_Dogs, and wouldn't want to have it in MGS either.
