Monster Hunter XX (Double Cross) for 3DS announced, launching March 18, 2017 in Japan

I hope we're not just getting a port of this for the Switch Monster Hunter game.

Like Tri, I want a game designed from the ground up to take advantage of the system's capabilities.

Back on XX though. If there's no Switch port in the launch window, when would you see one happen realistically without bothering the fanbase? Fall 2017?
I don't really see Capcom making the series jump to this platform directly with 5...
I see them jumping straight to 5; don't think Japan will go for the same game 3 times.

So how are they going to implement G-rank? I've never played a non-g rank version of MonHun so I don't know how this works (scaling from high-rank, deviant to g rank)

Say for example, I have my Hero's Set Armor that has a base def of around 640 maxed out, are they going to make G-rank armor even stronger, or are they going to nerf stuff?

Some new information about Monster Hunter XX from Famitsu. Game is apparently 70% complete.

Brave Style is an offensive hunting style focused on continuous attacks, in which you can only equip one hunter art. The style comes with a “Brave Gauge” that fills as you parry monster attacks. When it’s full, you can activate your “Brave State.”

In your charge state, you can parry and perform cancel attacks. The latter can be used to easily fill up the Brave Gauge by great amounts to quicker activate Brave State.

In your Brave State, your evasiveness with some weapon types increases, and you can use the powerful link attacks and special techniques of each weapon type. Your Brave Gauge will always decrease while in Brave State, so it’s important to continuously land attacks to keep it filled.

The following moves will become available:

  • “Strong Charged Moving Slash” – Uses a great sword and unleashes a charged attack while moving.
  • “Step Shot” – Shoots a special bullet with the light bowgun while stepping.
  • “True Charge” – Uses a hammer and unleashes an additional charged attack from the standard charged attack, and then one more super powerful charged attack.
Another new style is the “Renkin Style.” We’ve seen this style lifting a barrel-like object, but other than that details are unknown.

Famitsu also confirms that the Meowstress’ little sister will appear in the game.

Finally, here are some tidbits from an interview in the magazine:

  • The director of Monster Hunter XX is Daisuke Ichihara, and the main planner is Takurou Hiraoka. Both served as planners on Monster Hunter Generations. Yasunori Ichinose, the director of the previous game, is providing concept supervision and work flow.
  • They’re not adding a “G” to the title this time because “X” (Cross) is a special character. Since it’s a special game, it gets a special name.
  • Balfark is an ancient dragon-type monster who lives in a super high altitude area. He’ll incorporate elements that you normally wouldn’t be able to imagine.
  • Balfark and Ouma Diablos are both connected to the main story.
  • The concept of Brave Style was to make a sharper hunting style. The Bushido style is different in that it feels like a style intended for experts.
  • The Renkin Style is intended for people who want to vigorously enjoy hunting.
  • Many new elements are being prepared, more than what has already been shown.

So there's a 4chan rumour from a guy who called XX a few hours before the reveal.

He states MH5 is being developed for PS4
Sony have paid to not have it on the Switch
Will take on open world gameplay and make it more incline to Western appeal, getting rid of the timer and missions.
The MHPortable series will continue on the Switch, and sticks to the current formula

Sounds like a heaping pile of the old bullshit to me, but take it as you'd like. It's 4chan after all.

I have seen shitty web ads more believable than this.

'Brave' style just sounds like a variant of Adept. I wonder if they'll manage to come up with something even more OP.

I like the idea of this being a testing ground for crazy new stuff but it'll be hard going back to HBG after getting used to Adept. At the very least they need to keep the ability to roll in and out of siege mode.

Anyways, as stupid as that rumor sounds, I will never put anything past Capcom.

So........Should I just wait for this version to come out? I still haven't bought Generations yet

If this comes to the West, it'll show up later next year, like July/August. So even if you bought Gen after like Black Friday or something you'd have plenty of time to play.

That box art looks dope, why does MH art always gotta look so nice when I much prefer the games digitally installed on my systems?

Anyway, the official site has recently put up some short demonstration videos for the Brave style with most weapons at the bottom of this page: http://www.capcom.co.jp/monsterhunter/XX/action/main/01.html

It all looks rather technical and difficult to parse before I get a detailed explanation, but I can't wait to try it out.

Also while I still play Gen but await the transfer to XX, what is recommended I focus on until then? I'm guessing lay off on new armor sets since they will mostly become obsolete. But will many of the currently maxed out weapons I have then get an extra upgrade or two? And how will Deviant stuff work in relation to G rank? Do you think they will add 5 or so extra missions to some of the monsters?

Man, seeing some of those Brave style demonstrations is getting me hyped up. Rapid fire Gunlance shots look very cool (and needed considering how sub-par the Gunlance is in Gen), but I'm also excited by the crazy new attacks that SnS get when in Brave mode. Looks like the back-hop turns into a Insect Glaive style back-flip attack with the Adapt back-hop dodge attack as a follow up. And it gets a mini Shoryugeki shield attack!

Still curious what some of the remaining weapons will get. It looks like a lot of the weapons (hammer, GS, SnS, lance, LS) get Adapt counter moves as normal moves, so I'm curious what the Charge Blade will get when it really doesn't have any flashy Adapt-only moves. It'd be cool if Insect Glaive got the attack + extract grab move, but if it's like Adapt with the 0 stamina kinsect I'll have to pass on that.

The Brave style videos for the rest of the weapons are up now. For Charge Blade the things I noticed were:

- The attacks from Brave stance seemed to be just the normal transform attacks for both sword and axe mode.
- You get a blue shield buff when the Brave gauge is filled.
- In sword mode your evade becomes the step, and it has a guard point.
- In axe mode there's a new elemental discharge finisher that uses one phial. The animation looks similar to the hammer hunter art Spinning Meteor, except you're just doing one spin before a big slam.
- You still have the ultra burst but it doesn't consume your shield buff when used.
- In sword mode you can go straight from filling phials to the 2nd elemental discharge attack, rather than the first one as you do in the current styles.

Would anyone that knows Japanese be able to explain what's going on in the Insect Glaive preview? I can't tell, other than it looks like the kinsect has unlimited stamina.

Brave style light bowgun looks super fun. All of those quick dodges followed up with shots look super cool, but I'm no good with ranges weapons.

I don't think I need a fourth game on it. esp just a g rank turbo ultra version of one I already have.

"Renkin" means alchemy, right?

On its own it just kind of means "wrought gold/metal," but they're probably using it in the "renkin-jutsu" (alchemy) sense.

I don't really use IG so not sure about specifics, but it says "during Brave State you can link various attacks by attacking simultaneously with the bug," or something like that.

Yeah, it already feels strange having both 4G and X on mine, knowing there's very little reason to go back to 4G. Apart from the music. 4 had some absolutely amazing remixes of existing tracks, for example these:

Quest Clear
DLC Menu

These two pieces give me ridiculous goosebumps. I love MH, but have conflicting opinions about how quickly they're iterating on the series these days.

I think I'll wait until we can at least confirm MH existence on the Switch, as well as any region-locking/localisation news, etc.

Hunting Horn melody pop-ups now appear in the bottom-left corner instead of the middle of the screen, I welcome this change.

MHX dumb opaque windows for comparison:

It seems they also moved the regular popups further up:

Looks gross in stills but I guess it's fine in gameplay. I didn't really mind the centered notifications though.
These changes are interesting when you think about Switch's resolution and screen size. Hmm...
I wouldn't interpret too much into this (still think there will be a Switch SKU at launch though; it's the only thing that might get me to buy the game too. But I'm sure Switch will be region locked so why even bother getting my hopes up)

As a hunting horn user let me tell you it's great that you can now play music and not block your view for seconds at times. Especially when a monster suddenly turns and charges you.

I see. That's disappointing, seeing as I never use the kinsect for anything other than grabbing extracts. Looks like I'll be sticking with Aerial IG for the foreseeable future (eh, I probably wasn't gonna give that up no matter what). Though I wonder how much damage a decent player could deal with clever kinsect use, and whether or not it'll actually make power type kinsects worth making over speed and balanced ones (stamina it seems will be forever shafted).

Details on the “Renkin Style” Hunting Style

The Renkin Style is an unconventional hunting style that excels in support.
By wielding a special barrel called the “Great Renkin Barrel,” you can create “Renkin Items.” You can add an item up to five times to Renkin.
You can use “Great Renkin Barrel” by selecting items. It’s not in your item pouch.
As the Renkin gauge fills you’ll be able to “Great Renkin Barrel” while in Renkin Style. You can fill the gauge stock up to five.

Renkin Food: Stamina will rise to its greatest value. You will use this more often than other food items.
Renkin Style Whetstone: Restores sharpness and makes it easy to fill hunting style gauge for a fixed period of time.
Renkin Style Ball: Ball specially made for bow guns. When you hit enemies your hunting style gauge greatly increases.
Renkin Style Bottle: Special bottle made for bows. As you hit enemies your hunting style gauge will increase.
Renkin Vitality Medicine: Stamina is gradually restored over a fixed period of time. You will use this more often than other food items.
Renkin Sound Wave Bomb: Fires a high-frequency wave that small monsters and some large ones hate.
Renkin Earplug: Consumable that protects from a large monster roar once.
Renkin Speed Medicine: Medicine that makes you throw Great Renkin Barrels fast and increases speed in Renkin Style.
Renkin Increase: By mixing a particular item, that items quantity will increase.
Renkin Bazooka: Explosive item shot from the Great Renkin Barrel.
Renkin Spirit Up Ball: Makes nearby teammates’ hunting technique gauge to increase a fixed amount.
Renkin Healing Barrel: Removes nearby teammates’ debuffs and restores their stamina.

QUICK EDIT. Couple of additions. The Famitsu scans are floating around.

  • Renkin (Alchemy) Style has 3 Arts slots
  • Every levelled up Hunter Art gets a thing called a Style Powerup (SP), which is like a style-exclusive buff of sorts. Nearly all styles can only pick 1.
  • Renkin lets you equip up to 3 SP Arts
  • Jungle from MH2 is returning as a map
  • Prowlers get Wolverine's X Factor Hyper Combo or something

This is quite nice.

So the short of the new deviant monster stuff I've read elsewhere is true.

Deviant Mizutsune is blind. He sees via his bubbles and will shot lots of them when he can track you. He gains a few extra moves (like Zinogre's backflip) and can shoot fire bubbles when enraged.

Deviant Gammoth has ice armor and specialises in AoE attacks.

Deviant Astalos is basically more pissed off. Gets blue lightning when enraged. Has at least three new attacks - Plasma Blade (I'm guessing it's the light saber from his horn shown in the render), Black Hole (functions like that magnet dragon from MHF) and AoE Tail Explosion.

is it seriously 3ds only when switch is coming out, wat

We don't know.

Funny thing is I realized that PSX came and went with NO mention of MH at all, hence that increases the odds even more of the series' future being on Switch (with XX at launch I bet).

You know if Sony had a mainline MH game, they'd have said so by now.

I'm thinking that console consideration Capcom mentioned before (where so many thought it automatically meant PS4) was regarding Switch, because Nintendo IS calling it that at least in the west (not sure about Japan). Switch is everything Capcom ever wanted for MH, they get to cater to ALL audiences; the Japanese handheld audience, AND the western console audience. No way Capcom is oblivious to that.

Just going to quote something from /mhg/.

Every Hunter Art has its own SP version, and for every style you can equip one SP Art, except for Renkin Style (Alchemy). Renkin allows you to equip up to 3 SP Arts.

Using an SP Art will give you an 'SP' status, which gives different bonuses based on your Style.
SP is "Style Powerup" if you haven't caught on
- Guild: Item use speed up for certain items
- Striker: Arts gauge will increase automatically even if you don't hit the monster
- Aerial: Faster stamina recovery from jumps (less lag time between jumping and the stamina recovering)
- Adept: Longer frame window for adept evading and guarding, also longer duration to do the counter-attacks
- Brave: Brave gauge fills faster
- Alchemy: Gauge fills faster
- Prowler: Gauge moves cost less
- Palico: Move use frequency increased

I couldn't figure out the Hunter Art SP thing, but now I get it. Renkin's SP art buffs affect everyone in the party.

Some of the fixes like palico skill use and middle of the screen text boxes being moved really should be a generations / X update, they would be most welcome.

18 minutes of new footage

You can change the direction of the bait when fishing now. This is the most important gameplay change since mounting.

Man, the graphics look much better than I think any of the previous 3DS MH games (aside from Stories maybe), and it's come a LONG way from MH3U and even MH4 (with MH4's awful textures, they're FAR better here).

And I don't know if there's N3DS enhancements since Generations had none unlike MH4U for some reason.

I actually like use power kinsects with adept style. The range penalty means they come back faster after launching, and I can mix them in with my fighting more easily without having to spend time recalling them.

Maybe Sony is waiting for the January Nintendo event as well to announce and steal its thunder ;)
