Format
1v1
Double Elimination Bracket
Best of 3
Stock with no time limit

What is Double Elimination? Once you lose, you go to the loser's bracket. You must lose again in the loser's bracket to be eliminated from the tournament. This gives you a minimum of 2 sets. To see how this works, you can see the Pokemon tournament which was run in the same way.

Date
The tournament will begin on March 23rd, 2008. You will have 3 days to complete each round.

Settings
Stock: 3
Items: Off
Neutral Stages: TBA
Banned Stages: None

Set Flow
In your initial PM, please give your opponent the stage you would like to use if you lose the first or second matches. That stage should be picked by both users.

Match 1: Stage picked beforehand by Firestorm.
Match 2: Stage picked by loser of Match 1.
Match 3 (if required): Stage picked by loser of Match 2.

You will not know what character the opponent has picked.

Rules I am not using
The following are NOT in effect if you're familiar with Melee:
- Time limit (this is an online tournament, we don't need to finish 100 matches in one day)
- Dave's Stupid Rule (let's not make this more complicated)
- Banning a stage for the set (again, let's not make this more complicated)

IMO, the flow of sets with counterpicking is important enough to strategy that we should go with it.

Things to set on your game
Both players must set items to off during tournament matches. It randomly picks one person's item settings.
Both players must choose the stage chosen for the match. It randomly picks one person's stage settings.
Host set stock to 3. Otherwise, settings are default.

Prizes
Please thank Michan and MangaBullet as First, Second, and Third place winners will all receive a Virtual Console game of their choice!

MangaBullet is not up yet but will be in May hopefully.

Posting sign ups in the other thread is better. And remember to use the correct abbreviation. I don't even know all the States, let alone the abbreviations :lol I'm probably just going to paste it in Excel and order by alphabet, which is why I asked for that particular format.

So the Neutral stages, are you listing a bunch and we can pick or will all first round matches be played on the same stage?

I'm just gonna assign them per round I think. It'd get too complicated otherwise and people could too easily cheat. Although I do expect better from GAF. So like, first round everyone will use something like Smashville as the first stage, second round everyone uses Final Destination, third round everyone uses Castle Siege, etc.

Also people dont put too much stock into location of opponent. Though it may minimize lag, you can still have lagless battles with someone quite a distance from your own state. So dont freak out if you get paired with someone like that :lol

Distance doesn't seem to be the big deciding point for lag. Join up anyway.

Well, with west coast people at least, the lag was pretty unbearable. Oh well, let's try. :D

The definition of front-butt.
Change my brawl name to RAD. In my friend roster it says my name is BANK but when I select my custom button layout and start a match it says RAD.

My copy of Brawl and freeloader on the way and I will sign up as soon as I get my code. I do have one question though: What happens if a connection should fail during a match? I ask this because I once participated in a Smash Football tournament and when I was ahead 4:0 the connection got lost. We played again and I lost... (never knew if he disconnection on purpose).

Count me in.

EDIT: I could've sworn I posted this in the sign-up thread earlier today. I must be going batty from too much brawling.

Couldn't we just make an IRC channel for communication?

Firestorm

Member
IRC probably won't work as this will be a multi-day tournament, not all at once. I dunno how many people would use it either. PMing your opponent with your AIM or MSN might be best.

The tournament will be for 128 people. All people registering afterwards will be put in as a substitute in case people don't show up in the first round or get banned or something.

Poll
Should we give up the stage selection process and use something else? This is due to the process being complicated online as opposed to offline.

Potential replacements:
PM the stage you wish to use when contacting your opponent before the match. Both players must choose the stage the loser picked beforehand. Problem here is that it hardly promotes strategy as you wouldn't know what character your opponent is using or anything.

Just pick and random between the two people every match. Absolutely no strategy or thinking involved.

Leave it as it is. It's not too complicated. We'll manage to inform the other person about the stage.

How much strategy can there be in stage selection at this point? I suppose characters with poor vertical KO ability wouldn't do well in Shadow Moses, and characters with poor jumping ability wouldn't do well in Rumble Falls, but that's about it.

I'm fine however we wind up doing it. Just saying.

It's not that complicated, but I'm not sure how well it'd work to have people need to communicate using their PCs between matches. I'm right beside my computer when I play, but I know many might not be.

The definition of front-butt.
We could decide on 3 stages beforehand. Since the game has its own time limit it could start the game before 2 players decide on a stage through PMs which would be annoying.

Or just pick whatever you want.

Oh crap. I forgot about that too. And coming in and out of making rooms would be annoying too. You know what, I really do think I'm going to go with the PM beforehand idea. I'd rather not have one person getting the stage they want every round.

Relix

he's Virgin Tight™
For the sake of it, we can use AIM or MSN;
my AIM being Relix 3000. I barely use it, but if needed I will. My MSN... well PM me if you want it :D . This makes for communications easier.

Crispy4001 (mod at 1up) wants to have a friendly winner vs winner between this and their SSBB tournaments =) I hope whoever wins is interested, although they won't have their tournament until the Summer so it might be the Singles Tournament #2 if there is one.

Since I've been waiting to play Smash desperately (due to Nintendo's beyond shitty matchmaking) I'm glad I've got the chance to via this tournament.

Firestorm

I'm a little overwhelmed by the amount of people interested >_>; I hope everything goes smoothly.

And because there's 128 people, I will not be PMing everybody with reminders. I can only send 1 PM at a time and have to wait 1 minute between each. It would take me two hours. Pokemon with less than half the amount of participants was annoying enough =(

Also, I think I'm leaning towards letting go of the current counterpick system. I don't want to inconvenience people like that so I think I might just go with the "Tell the opponent what stage you want before you start" thing.

Why not just make it 3 specific stages? Smashville --> Battlefield --> FD or such?

Get back to me on Friday or Saturday. I've heard good turn-around times on Wiis so you might get it back if you send it on Monday.

We have maxed out on entrants. Everyone who signs up after this will be subs.

Set Flow rules have changed to the following:

Set Flow
In your initial PM, please give your opponent the stage you would like to use if you lose the first or second matches. That stage should be picked by both users.

Match 1: Stage picked by Firestorm.
Match 2: Stage picked by loser of Match 1.
Match 3 (if required): Stage picked by loser of Match 2.

You will not know what character the opponent has picked.
