New Game Informer cover tomorrow, next gen game reveal [Up3: Definitely Thief]

No it didn't. We're still getting homogeneous mass market drivel from formerly respected franchises. Hell Tomb Raider comes out in less than 12 hours. Western devs from the big publishers aim for a much higher crowd than the Souls games and they think you have to cripple their game to get it to sell at the numbers they want it to.

Just going to point out that Dark Souls (let's not kid ourselves, Demon's Souls did diddly squat) didn't release long enough ago to start affecting the way people design video games.

If we see games influenced by Dark Souls, we'll start seeing them next year.

Interesting. I've never played a Thief game, but I'd be down for a hardcore, non-dumbed down stealth game.

So, in essence, I'm not getting my hopes up.

Well Tomb Raider is a pretty huge franchise with gigantic market value to live up to. I'm sure they played it safe for the inevitable rebooting of TR movies as well. Thief series can take a little more risk because it's not maddeningly huge, just like Deus Ex. IMO they did a pretty decent job with Dues Ex: Human Revo. If Thief follows in those same footsteps, it can retain it's sense of uniqueness and it's hardcore-values.

I want to sit in the dark for 20 minutes trying to figure out the right time to assassinate a drunk ass guard. I have faith that they can pull this off.

I don't expect much. Those games sold about a million right? That would be considered a failure to the big 4 publishers for most of the AAA games they make. Not saying that's a correct way of thinking or planning, but that's how they would react.

This is a good chance to bring back what we know about Thi4f:

• Developing pre-production concepts into fully-designed systems (rewards schedule, shops, escape gates, public zones, etc.)

• Designing the side-content of the game's hub: activities, enticers, goals, flow and rewards

• Formulating the design guidelines for “extreme situations”; memorable scripted sequences with altered controls, camera and/or gameplay rules.
So, after Eidos Montreal's mystery projects showed up, I decided to do some digging.

The bad news is that I couldn't really find anything about them. The good news is that I did find information about other things.

Since I decided most people would want to talk about Thi4f instead of the barebones mystery information, I felt this would be better in a new thread.

I have taken pictures of everything in case this information gets taken down.

These most likely relate to their third project, which is a new IP.

They could be their fifth project or Deus Ex 4 though, like the guy who seemed pretty involved with Deus Ex (including the DLC) and was just promoted up to game designer.

My fear is that they make the combat more winnable. Best part of Thief was that you could end up in combat outside of stealth whenever, but you -would- get fucked if you got into more than a few fights in a row. If they give it fancier combat where it's easy (or even plausible) to fight off multiple people without taking hits or getting wooped, the game will blow ass. But I'm expecting a dumbing down if it's on the cover of GI.

Oh, this explains why I sucked at Thief games so much.

They really really need to drop the leet speak from the title. That's some 13-year old juvenile bullshite, right there. The number "4" doesn't even stand for "e" anyways !

Ugh.

Wh4t? :)

I really hope they don't make it so you can get into fights and win that way. That so goes against the spirit of the previous games. This will literally keep me from spending money on it.

Across platforms, roughly two millions at this point, even being very conservative with PC sales and guessing not more than 200,000 copies for the Prepare to Die edition.

And yeah, "two millions which pale compared to Assassin's Creed" would be a dumb way to look at it.
It's more like "two millions from a company that could only dream of these numbers before releasing that game".

Is it worth it to go back and play at least o e of the thief games? Have all of them on steam.

are there any that still hold up?

Yeah I was referring to people copying the difficulty and depth of the souls games, most notably games from those big publishers. They're the ones who would look at a million or two as a disappointment so they're not about to pull mechanics from the games they think have disappointing sales.

Thief 2 is still a top 2 or 3 best stealth game ever. Its depth and mechanics have not been passed in the stealth genre still, so yeah in that regard it holds up.

Thief 4: You'll want to protect steal him.

Man, I hope this game is on the XCOM side of the reboot fence rather than the Syndicate side.

That doesn't mean it's not Thief. It could be a prequel like Deus Ex HR or just a game they didn't want to give a number like Thief Deadly Shadows.

God help us if it's a reboot, which devs think gives them free reign to shit all over a franchise even though it kept the name.

I played all three for the first time in January and I think they hold up great. They're the best stealth games I've ever played.

I hope the dev team have been taking some cues from this: http://www.thedarkmod.com/main/

Been playing since I beat the Thief games and it adds some of features that improve the overall Thief experience.

Usually I get my game informer copy early, maybe they cracked down since I put up the thread about the Witcher 3...

:lol I so hope it's Thief4.

So we can rule out Thief 4 or Battlefield 4.

Could just be its no longer Thi4f but they're just calling it Thief, like what they did with Tomb Raider just being Tomb Raider. Or Thief plus some subtitle.

Or its something else entirely like Dragon Age 3, but I don't think that's the case.
