Which is not true at all, since you can make suspended save-states, similar to Fire Emblem and other games.
What I mean is that you can save at any time but once you reprise playing from that save, the savestate itself will disappear so that you can't start from there over and over.
It's perfect actually, and way better than NSMB DS (which was exactly like NP describes the NSMBWii one, plus you could also save after spending coins at Toad's houses).
