OG Xbox Appreciation and Lack of Emulation Thread of the big black box of doom

Opened up my xbox and found a half corroded capacitator. It's gonna suck when this thing dies. I got it for $50, hard modded, with the advanced A/V pack and controller S!

Thinking about buying up a couple more Xbox games today. Also thinking about getting Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, because the PC version doesn't work right anymore, was kinda glitchy to begin with, and will clearly never be fixed by Ubisoft. It's a great game, so I might as well have a version that actually works.

Thinking I might bust out a drink and play some Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2X tonight, which is probably my favorite Tony Hawk game ever. I'll need to post my Xbox collection someday (it's not big, but I really enjoy all of the games I own)

what are some good xbox "hidden gems"?
Off the top of my head:
Deathrow
Quantum Redshift
Psi-Ops
Voodoo Vince
i-Ninja
Stubbs the Zombie

Not really hidden, but still great:
Outrun 2
Rallisport Challenge 2
Midtown Madness 3 (though I haven't played it since XBL was shut down for the original Xbox)
PGR2

I think I'm just going to give up and throw out my Xbox at this point. I bought Project Snowblind and entered an Xbox Live menu, and the Xbox restarted with blinking green lights. I'm guessing that I already had the latest dashboard. Now when I try to launch the exploit in Splinter Cell, I get the blinking red light and "Your Xbox requires service". I can't get into the dashboard and now I can't even get into the softmod installation menu. I give up. Maybe I'll buy another cheap one down the line. I'm just frustrated that I wasted this time and money for nothing.

I finally bought Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4. Only took me 12 years, but I plunked down that $15 for a sealed, non-platinum hits copy.

It was the dumbest thing. Back when I finished playing through THPS3 like 24 times or something this summer, I thought to myself, "man, I wish there was more of this." I've watched my friend play about 10 minutes of THPS4, and that's the entirety of my exposure to it. We're gonna fix that.

Next on the list of games to buy is either Crazy Taxi 3 or KOF 02/03... or maybe both at once.

Does it qualify as port begging when I'm sad that a game was never ported rather than "I want X or Y game ported to Z console now"?

I'm still butthurt that Sega never released Shenmue II (or Shenmue I for that matter) or Panzer Dragon Orta on PS2. The OG Xbox audience were never the intended target for those games. Not to mention the fact that the PS2 sold 12 times more. Those games deserved more exposure. A shame they died right there.

It seems a little vindictive to still want those games on vastly inferior hardware.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 is dope and it's probably the last "true" Tony Hawk experience (before they felt the need to add a story mode to the game and what not). The ability to be able to roam the level for as long as you want before you start a goal kills the rush of having to complete goals within two minutes, but it's still fun

Yeah, it's unfortunate that the 2 minute rush to complete every goal is gone, but whatever. The structure still seems intact. It sounds like a lot of people still liked THUG, so I'm kinda tempted to at least try the first, if I still dig THPS4.

Also, I hope I'm not disappointed by the soundtrack in THPS4.

And yeah, there's no way the PS2 would've been able to do Shenmue 2 as much justice as the Xbox did. And from what I understand, the Xbox was more similar to the DCs architecture than the PS2, which is why there were some atrocious ports of DC titles on PS2 (Le Mans 24hr comes to mind, and I think F355 was not that much better).

What? That's ridiculous! Why would I want Panzer Dragon Orta on PS2 now? Hell no. What I was lamenting was that those games were ignored back then more than they should've due in no small part because of them being exclusive to the OG Xbox and yes many of us, including me, wished they would appear on PS2 as well at least.

The PS2 might've been inferior but it was by far the most popular console worldwide whilst the OG Xbox was only a modest success in the U.S. and a failure in Japan and Europe (mostly).

The PS2 was still way ahead of the DC in power but with a very different architecture. If they wanted more exposure they should've make it work and because of that (and other decisions) the Panzer Dragoon and Shenmue franchises died with the OG Xbox.

I'm with you on this. I believe Sega botched thier move to third party. More games needed to be multiformat to maximise sales. I think a game as Japanese as Panzer Orta may have sold better on PS2 and GC. As a Sega fan I lament thier missed opportunities that may have prevented them becoming the conservative shadow of what they once were now.

I loved thier Xbox output but I feel like they were a poor fit for the Halo machine.

Eh, I bought the Xbox specifically because it was a Sega machine. Hell, I bought JSRF before I bought the console itself.

same i remember buying hella sega titles

i don't think rent a hero was supposed to be any good but I wish it came out instead of getting canned

Speaking of Sega games, I recently stumbled upon Sega Soccer Slam. Was that game any good? It came out in 2002, but I somehow completely blocked its existence out of my mind until now.

I bought it for the Sega titles but I can't call it the Sega machine as it missed out on stuff like Virtua Fighter 4, Super Monkey Ball, Yakuza etc. I had to own every console to play everything I wanted by them. Luckily I was able to afford to at the time but I'm sure others weren't so lucky. Spreading themselves out like that and spliting the fanbase was dumb.

And I still think they could have sold more to none Sega fans on the other 2 systems. No one bought an Xbox in Japan.

yeah Panzer Dragoon Orta on PS2 would probably be a bad time.

i made it to Ruins in ep.1 of PSO. this game has gradually gotten a lot better, though I found out that I fucked up getting a good weapon simply by not doing missions in a certain really weird order, instead of sequentially. (the soul eater partisan)

You're playing PSO on your own? Is it actually good when you play it like that?

either way you play it, it's gonna be a shallow loot grind RPG where you run through fairly boring dungeons. playing solo, I find it's a perfect "turn your brain off" game. Great music, classic phantasy star 90s sci fi anime style, and adequate combat+loot.

That's kinda exactly what I want. I don't care about story or whatever. I just wanna grind like crazy in an RPG that's fun to play.

Give it a try, it's pretty cheap. Though to play offline mode on the Xbox version, you still need a gamertag attached to your xbox or download the .iso with a GT baked into it. You can freely play any of the other versions and get the same experience, though PC has an extra episode (called Blue Burst.)

THUG2 has a Classic Mode that brings back the 2-minute timer. You can still get off your board but other than that it's almost exactly the same as THPS 1-3.

An English version of Rent a Hero leaked a few years ago. Likely the copy GamePro used to review it.

So, what games are actually better on the Xbox than on the PC? I know there's a couple like Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow (since the PC version is busted and won't be fixed), but are there others? Either games that were glitchy as hell on PC or that had extra content on the Xbox.

Can y'ALL recommend me some titles?

I have Shenmue 2, Genma Onimusha and Dead or Alive 3. I'm planning to get Fatal Frame 1 (Maybe 2 if the Wii version isn't worth it, and Maybe Silent Hill 2 if I don't get the GH version). Anything else I should be picking up? I can only think of Conker Live and Reloaded.

Mechassault 1&2, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Star Wars games(Knights of the Old Republic 1&2 and Republic Commando), and Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth are really good. Some other games would be 007: Nightfire, Darkwatch, Nightcaster 1, and Breakdown.

I haven't played through them yet but there is also Nightcaster 2, Grabbed by the Goulies Blink 1&2, Otogi 1&2, Crimson Sea, and Stubbs the Zombie. There are many others but a few to avoid would be Robotech: Battlecry, Spawn: Armageddon, and Dino Crisis 3(I can't believe how bad this game was) all are badly designed games.

Huh... I thought Robotech: Battlecry was supposed to be good.

At least, that's what I recall being the case in 2002. I suppose that was a while ago, though :-/

Anyway, the obvious recommendation is Ninja Gaiden Black, because it's one of the best games of all time. And Outrun 2.

Well Robotech isn't in same category as Dino Crisis and I did finish the game. There was just some things that I really did not like about the game. The bosses are really bad they are faster and are able to do too much more damage to you while your are not able to do a lot to them. There are escort missions that are annoying especially Chapter 3 Mission 5 that almost made me give up on the game. Also the game tells you to specifically use the sniper mode to snipe other snipers in certain sections/missions but it is completely useless because the snipers know where you are immediately and can shoot faster than you can. It is made worse because the second to last mission is a dedicated sniper mission that has plenty of snipers that can kill you in about three hits and there is no way to regain health in a mission. So I did use cheat codes on the second to last level and I also had a few minor control issues with the game. Although with all that said I did have fun with the missions that were not boss battles or escort missions my favorite were the space battles.

From what I remember, it was VERY good. Basically NBA Jam, but for Soccer. And with Sega characters (I think?).

It's a great game, and I believe it ran in HD on the Xbox? Or something that set it out from the rest like that. Might've been something else.

Also have a feeling it's supported on the 360s BC.

I'm been dying to get into original xbox but I can't seem to find anything locally, yesterday I found a black one at goodwill, no cables, no controllers, no games, for $30. Without any way of testing it, i had to let it go.

What's a reasonable price for the regular model?

My favorite console. Thousands upon thousands of hours gaming. Will another device consume me to that level? Probably never again.

Highlights of the console for me:

I like your statement about the scope and how no other console could do it at the time.

So "broken", so "bad" in so many ways. But I love this game. This game taught me that the spirit of a game, or its initial vision, can shine through bugs and bad implentation, and even somewhat still exist, if you bridge to it, and its inherently reachable (lol). edit: only spent 2 hours on this short-ass post, so karma gave me the top' o da page, nice

I think because KOTOR and DA:O were good games, and because they were successful at capturing the hadcore + maintstream... THAT is the reason for the downfall of Bioware. But for a moment in time, we had bliss

Some of my posts were multiplats, like this one. It's as much a shoutout to the time of videogames as it is the Xbox. The PS2 was king of sales, the Xbox was king of what games were being developed. And thus the FPS era was born.

So in the same day I managed to accidently delete my softmod, and my laser broke. Before I would just clean the laser, but that no longer does the trick. Can you buy any IDE DVD Drive and put it in? Or does it have to be specific?

Did you bring it to the front? My Goodwill keeps cords and controllers at the register and gives them to you when you buy the system. Got my Xbox and 2 controllers from them for $15 2 years ago.

I was cleaning out a closet recently and came across one of my old Xboxes. I was wondering what the hell to do with it. I have cables, accessories, etc. You can have it for shipping costs. Send me a PM.

No, you need Xbox compatible DVD drives for original games to work. If it was still modded, a normal DVD drive works fine for burnt games

Tony Hawk 4 and Crazy Taxi 3 got here today... and both without any problems. That's got to be some kind of record for Ebay.

It feels kind of weird to have a new Tony Hawk game. After 13 years, THPS 1-3 was kind of the entire thing in my mind. Now I have to accommodate for the fact that there's more.

I mean personally, I would (maybe) stop after THUG, cause the series just really goes downhill after that one (I personally like Tony Hawk's American Wasteland, but it's nowhere near the level of the first five games)

The absolute furthest I'll go is THUG2, since that one still seems to have a number of fans. Almost nobody seems to like the games that came after. But even then, I'm not super enthused about the Underground series. 4 might be the last hurrah for me.

Years back, when you could still find regular ass DVD-ROM drives there where 2 "compatible" drives, the most common was the LG GDR-8163B and flash it to have FULL drive capabilities, that is, play OG games and avery media disc you could find. Sadly, these drives are not anymore around.

Here's the full tutorial to flash and to mod your case to fit it inside with full button support:

Thank you, I will probably end up modding it again soon, will either flash this drive or cannibalize another xbox. Thanks.
