PAL Charts - Week 13, 2014

Before the announcements of these console, there was a general feeling in the industry that MS would destroy Sony this gen. This included making serious gains in Sony dominated countries. I think nobody really expected it to turn out like this.
Anyone who believed that didn't look at what's going on rationally. You only have to compare what Microsoft's first party was eight years ago, and what it is now. The dismantling of their studio capacity was drastically apparent even before the announcement.

Also easy enough to know is that Microsoft cannot compete with Sony as a hardware designers and manufacturers. Given equal spec targets, Sony will always do a more efficient, more elegant design. And even given same final design, Sony could still manufacture it cheaper. That's the natural benefits of an excercised core competence. Blu-ray and Cell kinda made that less apparent during the last gen, because there was way more price pressure on Sony than on Microsoft. But that wasn't what I'd consider "equal spec targets" either. Comparing Xbone vs PS4 specs, physicals and price, it's pretty clear cut though.

Post-announcement factors:
*no natural momentum transfer from Xbox 360 => Xbone (no BC, no cross-buy)
*not price competitive (reasonable to assume before, then confirmed)
*not spec competitive (kind of the real shocker, until you realize how blowing 3 billion transistors on ESRAM is exactly the kind of thing that happens if you don't really do hardware design)

Anyway, numbers for 2013 were:

FR >€2.7B
GE €2.66B
UK £2.19B (which is like 2.6B considering the average exchange rate in 2013).

But Germany has >80M inhabitants vs ~65 for the UK and FR.

That 2.66B is from that shitty newzoo report. The GFK/BIU report is more detailed and has the german market at 2.41B (1.82B software/ 0.59B hardware & accessoires).
The whole study is conducted by GFK, so they have full tracked sales and internal data and GFK does a survey that include 25k consumers, which is a pretty big sample and GFK obviously knows how to do such things as it is their core business.
Newzoo reports seem always kinda fishy. And they always include a made up category where the individual country is at #1 or #2 to get headlines.

I think it's hard to compare those markets, because we don't know what those reports cover on the digital front. Don't know if FR/GB include hardware or accessoires. And we also don't know how point cards get tracked.

I don't think that UK is not #1 anymore. At least for games we talk on GAF it's the biggest market.
Looking at hardware LtD gives a good picture. Or what games like GTA, CoD and Fifa sell.

A big part of the german pc market is lowbudget. You can see this from the low average price of pc games and how much retails space those simulators and Wimmelbildspiele get. Steam is pretty big though.
Steamstats give a good hint. http://store.steampowered.com/stats/content/

Well then. Data for France is from the SELL, which gets it from GfK. And that counts everything (HW, SW, DD, accessories etc etc). Obviously they must just be estimates as always. I don't know about the UK one it's a whole figure from the ERA which tracks music, film and VG stuff. They do have physical vs digital though.
Found it here:
http://www.musicweek.com/news/read/music-sales-worth-half-of-uk-s-video-games-market-in-2013/057152

edit: Actually I'm wondering if that UK figure is for software only... It's partly from GfK so I would assume they track HW too but I don't know if it's included in this.

Hmm... If that's the case the overall figure must be vastly over the french/german one then.

Just found this, but that's for 2011... Includes a lot of things which aren't in the FR/GER data (events, movie spin offs...)

Well it did in 2012 but went back up in 2013. So I guess the 2.19B figure might not include HW, so there'd be another 3-400M to add probably.

Nevertheless at the end of the day, UK FR and GER are fairly equivalent markets.

FWIW, I believe that this may be the image that MCV UK published which is wrong. Look at the hardware sales and accessory sales figures -- do you think accessory sales are ever larger than hardware sales? I'm fairly sure they've got those swapped.

Yeah, I dunno. I mean the accessories thing includes XBL/PSN cards.
But the french report showed HW sales around twice accessories sales (in value) so yeah, it's possible therer's a mistake somewhere.
Nevertheless, I thought this would give an idea of the "non-software" sales in the UK, so the 2.19B value I had for the UK is likely SW only, and the UK market is most likely significantly ahead of the FR/GER ones in the end.

Not only that, they include DD games in two different categories.

I assume this is a retail only list, so no download-games? Why is Daylight in there then? It's a download game, isn't it?

No it's just a list of games releasing in April in the UK. I'm not sure it's complete or up to date, mind you.

I think Child of Light and Trials Fusion are download titles too, iirc. CoL gets a retail special edition however

UK charts up.

EA’s ‘FIFA 14’ returns to No1 (+8%) having last been top of the pile in week 6 this year.

The title has still not been out of the Top 6 since launch 28 weeks ago and now has a total of 11 weeks at No1 – a feat that only 4 other titles have managed (‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’, ‘Wii Fit’, ‘Zumba Fitness’ and ‘FIFA: Road to the World Cup 98’). Bethesda debut strongly at No2 with the PC version of ‘The Elder Scrolls Online’ – a first game and 5 years in the making for Zenimax Online Studios, with PS4/Xbox One versions to follow. EA’s Xbox One/PC ‘Titanfall’ holds at No3 (-36%), with an Xbox 360 version coming next week.

Climbing 4 places to No4 is Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Ghosts’ (+35%) and boxed product sales of this game are no doubt spiking due to the launch this week of the second DLC pack ‘Devastation’ on Xbox formats. Konami drop 3 places over last week at No5 with ‘Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes’ (-46%) and Sony’s PS4 ‘Infamous: Second Son’ (-55%) drops 5 places to No6 having held on to No1 for 2 weeks. The only other new release within the Top 40 is Tecmo Koei’s ‘Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Complete Ed.’ debuting at No29 for PS4/Vita.

ISS dropped below TF XB1 in the individual charts. Ruh roh.

Surprises me that PvZ 360 is on 6° while the XB1 version is nowhere to be found. For the most part, next-gen sales of multiplats have been better than last-gen.
