Hello and welcome to the open beta thread for a free to play, team based, first person shooter Paladins: Champions of the realm.
Fundamentals of gameplay
In this game a group of 5 players faces off against another group of 5 to capture a single objective point in the middle of the map.
Before the match starts players can pick their loadout cards and buy buff cards. Later during the game players can spend accumulated combat currency (for performing combat tasks) to buy more buff cards or upgrade the ones they already have.
Once a point is taken the winning team becomes the attacker for the rest of the round pushing payload along predefined tracks, while the defenders try to stop them.
Any time an objective is finished the winning team is granted one point (one point for capture, one point for pushing the payload into the enemy team and one point for preventing the enemy team from pushing the payload into the base).
If at any point a team is granted a 4th point, the team wins the game.
Matches last between 10 to 15 minutes. It is possible to finish the match considerably earlier if the battle is completely one sided.
Currency
By playing the game you will gain gold, which can be spent on loadout cards, unlocking new champions and on basic cosmetic items.
Premium currency (gems) can either be bought for money or earned through daily log in rewards (logging in 6 and 7 days in a row grants the player premium currency). These gems can be used instead of gold to purchase champions and basic cosmetics, but they can also be used to buy advanced cosmetics, the ability to change your profile name and to buy radiant chests.
Radiant chests
These chests are awarded to a player each time he levels up his account. Each chest gives player 3 items which can either be cosmetics, gold or loadout cards.
Characters
Every character has two abilities assigned to their mouse buttons and another three to their keyes (Q,E and F) with the E key being the character's special ultimate manoeuvre that charges up as the player scores points (doing objectives, surviving in combat, dealing damage, healing, etc.).
Each player has to pick one character once he joins the pre-game lobby. No two players on the same team can pick the same character. Characters are divided into four roles: frontline, damage, flank and support.
Frontline
Frontline characters are designed to be either very durable or have the tools to make everyone around them durable.
Damage
Damage characters focus on dealing sustained damage down range. These characters excel at breaking tough enemies with focused fire and have the tools to survive engagements if they get into trouble.
Flank
Flank characters are high risk/high reward damage dealers. They have the tools to move around the battlefield quickly and deal devastating blows to the enemy's damage and support characters. Their health is low but their burst potential is huge.
Support
Support characters focus on healing or providing fire support and other benefits to the team. They are usually positioned in between the frontline and the damage dealers. Their sturdiness and overall survivability varies as well as their damage potential, some supports can dish out a considerable amount of damage in surprisingly short time.
Loadout Cards
The card system in the game is designed to give each player the option to tinker their characters according to their needs. Each character has a total of 16 cards that modify their skills and abilities. Each loadout must contain 5 cards and a total worth of the deck must be exactly 12 points. Each card is worth one point but can be freely upgraded by up to additional 3 points to make its total worth 4 points. Each character can have up to 6 loadouts with one slot always taken by the basic one.
