Plastic Scale Modeling Age |OT| Planes, tanks, cars, sci-fi & more

Finally got around to doing my Falcon that I bought late last year. Still far from finished though.

Lastplayed, that is amazing work man! Love all the attention to details, its clear you are experienced and know what you are doing. I also seen the ship you built, which was also stunning.I only ever did planes as a kid and knew nothing of all the tricks and techniques that I see modellers use.

My girlfriend bought me a scale model of an old 60's Honda racing bike. I want to start it but it looks like a complex build. I mean I could do it but with it being so long (Im talking 20+ years) between builds I am thinking I may buy a kit that looks a bit simpler. I want to build an SR-71 Blackbird. I have never airbrushed but am thinking of picking one up and practicing on this before I attack the bike.

As a kid, it was all enamel paint, paint brushes and that stringy glue. Watching Youtube vids of models being built has shown me that its come along way

Thanks. :)

Yeah there's so many tools, products and paints these days. The technology of making kits has come a long way too, as with all the aftermarket companies pumping stuff out.

I have no idea what it's from lol but it looks pretty sweet!

The Graze is the Zaku-equivalent in the latest Gundam series. Despite being cannon fodder in the show, I love the design, too.

I'll try to post better photos this weekend.

Thanks for the compliment. Your Falcon looks fantastic, too.

I've gone from small scale to big scale, currently a 1/32 Canadian Starfighter.

That awful feeling when you throw away a runner not noticing there's still a piece on it.
Now my Tie Advanced is missing a laser beam.

Ha, yep been there before.

I'm getting into Arena Rex and painted this model. I'm waiting for the remaining units to come in. They should be in by Tuesday!

Very cool! I really need to practice my figure painting skills.

Just wrapped up my AFV Club Churchill from the Dieppe Raid. Was a really fun build, it even has workable suspension and tracks.

Didn't know there was a plastic scale modeling thread. A lot of great stuff.

I am currently painting a German armor for Bolt Action. Right now I'm working on Normandy camo for a PIV without the skirt armor. I have never painted camo before so a bit lost lol.

They're definitely worth it, and they don't even need to be that expensive or complex. I just went online and literally bought the cheapest compressor/airbrush combo I could find since I'd never used one before. Over a year later and I'm still using it without any problems, it seems to do the job just fine and it's really quick to clean too.

Any chance you could post a link to what you got?

I just bought Metal Gear Ray model kit during my trip to Japan.

For someone who is practically novice in assembling model kits. How long (and how hard for that matter :p) does it take to complete?

Thanks in advance.

Some really good modellers here.

I just started again after many years off.

Not as good as some in this thread but I'm quite happy with it.

Edit: I might put up some pictures of some car models I've done later. They need some dusting before that though.

Maybe 8 hours of work if you've never done this before. Not including the time needed to apply the decals.
To make your life easier use a good thin nipper,or at least a nail cutter.

Just how to best paint small planes. I have a Tie Fighter Advanced and I was wondering how to best tackle it with an airbrush.

Ah cool, I'm getting that soon. It's the Bandai kit I assume? I paint all the main parts first and then stick it all together, then paint the detailed parts. I've got videos on building the Y-Wing and A-Wing.

Anyone know a source for 1/100 combat soldiers?
I have multiple packs of the Gundam ground crew pack as well as 100+ civilians for train sets but now I need some actual troops.
I have seen a few ww2 tank kits that include like 1 soldier but im going to need a bit more than that. An modern soldiers if its possible.

Thanks! And yeah, it's the Bandai kit.

Sweet, would love to see it when done!

Tried ebay? That's my usual go-to source for specialist items.

Oh god my search for 1/100 troops introduced me to the depths of 15mm kits for buildings and shit.
And I happened to see a 15mm Batman custom...
Now i have to do that and build a damn 15mm Batcave and im considering a bloc of Gotham.

lol that's what I love about this hobby, you get drawn into all sorts of weird and wonderful things you never thought existed!

Yup.
I was just doing small scale military(anime military included) and eventually got a JSDF helicopter which lead into getting that 2ft tall Godzilla because I thought it would make a cool display together.
Which made me want some actual troops,
This leads to 15 mm superheroes
And finally
Can't wait to get started.

Im loving this scale for everything now, I just wish more kits included scaled humans because man just a bit of paint and you can make some real varied characters at that size.
Thats 1 mold of a female citizen for a 1/100 train set and I got 4 good characters out of it so far(needing a smaller brush before I finish up the faces.)
Takao - Arpeggio of Blue Steel
Cryska - Muv-Luv
Mei-Ling - MGS4
Asuka - Evangelion

Heck I might look into doing something Jurassic Park related (which I wanted to do since childhood) in this scale.

Edit: oh god 15mm Girls und Panzer decals...

Hi scale modeling GAF. I picked up 20 or so built and painted scale model aircraft today at a thrift shop. The paint jobs look very nice and the aircraft are from many different eras. I paid between $6 and $9 each. I'll try to get pics up later in the week. There were a few left on the shelf with minor defects like missing wheels and propellers. At that price should I pick them up anyway?

I'll probably keep a few and hang them in my son's room and sell the rest online.

Jumping back into the hobby, would GAF be keen on a group build? I always found them pretty fun in the gunpla communities I was in back then.

I picked up a 1/72 Corsair, 1/72 Messerschmidt and a 1/48 TBM-3 to keep me occupied in the meantime :p

Yeah might as well. Use them as inspiration. :p

I suck at aircraft, I've tried so many times and I just can't get it to work. Maybe sometime...

Anyways, here's my latest build, Polar Lights NX-01 Enterprise.

Awesome thread! I did some mid-sized Gundam models when I was a kid. Hoping to get back into it again to see how things have progressed in the last decade or so.

Any recommendation on where to buy/order mecha model kits?

EDIT: nvm. Just read the entire OP. :)

The only reason I'm doing aircraft atm is because I picked up a few of the 1/72 Airfix starter sets before those. The aircraft at that scale agreed with me, the armour (cromwell mk4) really didn't lol. I broke so many pieces that it was shameful.

Probably going to be doing a few 1/35 tanks after those but the further I dig with aircraft the more cool planes I see and want to build.

Does anyone have tips on mixing Vallejo paints in the bottle? I picked up a few model color paints that seem to have seperated themselves while on the shelf and no matter how much I try to shake the bottle there are still bits in the bottle that aren't coming together.

I have a jar of airsoft pellets that I use for paints. I'll drop one in and it helps stir the paint. But I'm not sure how well it I'll work with older paints that may have dried a little.
