Pop songs with violins in the background are bloody great

John Cale - Paris 1919: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5YHqWqhFkU

Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDqM6mSjVMI
(along with pretty much that whole album)

Radiohead - How To Disappear Completely: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZq_jeYsbTs
(maybe not pop enough?)

R.E.M. - Nightswimming: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahJ6Kh8klM4

Gorillaz - El Manana: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4wkPoVILSQ

The Go! Team - Everyone's a VIP to Someone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AORosDGixrY
(an instrumental song, but poppy enough for me)

David Bowie - Life On Mars?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6C0RmRGTePw

Annoyingly, the only songs I really love that have been posted up in this thread are ones I already know like Masterplan, Muse stuff, and the Massive Attack one. Andrew Bird was pretty good though.

That's because you only like fake, synthesized violins.

For example:

The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lyu1KKwC74
I came in here for this. Thanks, OP!

The first time I ever heard the song I only heard the first 30 seconds or so in a little video. The strings blew my mind away, and I began a frantic search to track down what group was responsible for the song. Glad I did since they became my favorite band.

I never would have thought something as simple as that would have grabbed my attention like it did, but I guess it just goes to show.

That's because it's one of the best songs ever written. Pity they never made a penny from it.

But that's kinda poetic seeing as song is about the bittersweet symphony that's life!

Also, are the violins in Unfinished Sympathy and The Masterplan fake synthesized ones like that guy said?? Does that mean the sound was made with a computer program? And is it fair to say that this computer program is therefore one of the most awesome things ever built?

I will add links later if you want, but Jeff Lynne is a rich orchestral master. Look up songs by ELO such as Livin' Thing, Xanadu with Olivia Newton-John, previously mentioned Mr. Blue Sky, It's Over, Telephone Line, Rockaria!, 10538 Overture, Can't Get It Out Of My Head...

Just pick up a nice ELO box set and you will be in heaven.

Additionally the James Bond themes are good, too. Goldeneye, You Only Live Twice, From Russia With Love, Tomorrow Never Dies, We Have All The Time In The World, Nobody Does It Better, Moonraker...

You've touched upon my favorite instrument in pop/rock music. Even the goofy September Rain by Guns and Roses has redeeming qualities.

Violins might be the greatest instrument ever. Disarm by Smashing Pumpkins was one of the first songs that got me into violins incorporated into rock songs.

Los Campesinos! do a killer job with violins. If I was a boxer I think I'd play a song of theirs to pump me up before a fight.

i've been begging for over 5 years.
I've been cruising this thread all morning. Sorry I don't have anything to contribute because I'm not much of a music aficionado. But thanks for the tunes this morning GAF.

Starsailors, Four to the Floor

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0votplOm8E&ob=av3e

they asked Phil Spector to produce this (same dude who produced Let it Be) and he came up with his usual "wall of sound" method. Starsailor hated him and stopped worked with him. And guess what? this is the only song by Starsailor that will ever remembered, and it's cool only thanks to Spector.

Way to go Starsailor!

(Note: none of these have violins)
