Raspberry Pi Gaming thread - Cheap emulation and gaming projects

I'd only be interested if there was a unified front end to the emulators.

Like the .emu series on Android & iOS.

RetroAhow'goes some of the way but not all of the way.

Isn't this kind of a unified front end? Or what do you mean by it?

I got my PS3 controller working with this now. Just a tip you need to power this with a plug that is 5v 2a, since the Bluetooth dongle and PS3 controller when it's wired (during setup phase) draw alot of power.

You don't have to go to 'register RetroArch controller' with the PS3 Controller. Just install the PS3 drivers under the retropie_setup.sh 'Setup' configuration menu and it does it all for you.

I'm still confused how multi disc games work when needing to change CDs.
 
Can someone provide simple steps on configuring the controller for the individual emulators ? I have a Super Smart Joy with a SNES pad, it's recognised and configured generally, but in the actual emulators the buttons don't match up, even in the SNES emulator. I've looked online for solutions, but I'm a total Linux noob so it's all making my head spin a little bit.

I missed that.

Looking into it this is just a frontend/launcher. What I was asking for is a unified emulator interface such as the .EMU series of emulators, or OpenEmu on Mac OS X.

With Emulation Station do I still have to learn how to configure each emulator? Or has the installation of RetroPie done that for me?

Also, how is the graphical capability of the new RPi2? My research on the first showed it did not have graphics acceleration and that was a bit of a bottlekneck.

Anybody tried Sensible Soccer on the Amiga? How does it perform?

The image you download has it done all for you. Some emulators like GBA or Neogeo need bios that you will have to get and put in the relevant BIOS folder. (its done the same way you copy roms over). If you want to configure shaders and all that you will need to do a bit of reading.

The only think you may need to do is the aspect ration for games if you monitor cuts them off (see FAQ section in OP).

Also, how is the graphical capability of the new RPi2? My research on the first showed it did not have graphics acceleration and that was a bit of a bottlekneck.

N64 games are iffy. Some games like Ocarina of Time work while others like Conkers Bad Fur Day are a glitchy mess.

Everything else up PS1 games are running flawlessly for me.

I'm probably going to end up transforming a coffee table of some sort into an arcade, and since I already have a Pi 2 - there's a good chance it'll make up the guts of the thing.

As mentioned on the first page, 240p output is not possible.

The Pi 2 has a HDMI out only. Don't know about the first model.

Pi 1 & 2 b+ have composite video rca over 3.5mm jack (in addition to hdmi), the regular b and a have rca jacks on the pi itself. So he will be able to display on a CRT 4:3 TV on a Pi 2.

I made one from the config files in Retropie when I edited the paths to run roms from a USB drive. Should be reasonably accurate.
Using .hdf files for the Amiga combined with whdload games is a great combo but its a bit flakey. Crashes the emulator when opening up Workbench folder, although using links direct to the games folders works most of the time.

My plan for this is to see if I can squeeze one into a not-so-expensive Fightstick, like the WWE Brawlstick (can be had for $60AU). I think that'd be a great project, have a power port (obviously), HDMI and a USB or two for an extra controller (for daisychaning, 3DO-style) and ROM storage.

Can the Raspberry Pi B+ (or whatever the latest one is) run off the power from a USB port? I'd assume not (500mA would be a stretch) but would enhance portability if it could.

Edit: 1.8A, so no dice. Hardly a concerning factor, though.

The Pi 2 needs 2.1A I think, I use my tablet charger to power it.

They give around 10-20 hours charge for a Pi depending on the mAh of the battery. Make sure you get a B+ model pi because it consumes less power too.

This command exits the emulator or 'games' when button 3 is pressed (Start button in this case) at the same of Select.

You will notice some cool commands in there like load and save states. input_menu_toggle_btn takes you to the RetroArch menu and you can apply shaders on the fly. See Terry Lees post @ #44 and follow Floobs video on where to add these lines if you are confused. I actually noticed these options on my PS3 Controller config file.

I would be interested to know if input_disk_next_btn = "13" changes PS1 discs for multi disc games.

I've been playing around with RetroPie on a Raspberry Pi 2 for awhile and thought it was quite amazing really, so I decided to finally take the plunge and build my first own cabinet, nothing fancy and not the typical Mame cabinet with all kinds of input options, just a single joystick and 4 action buttons and a few more for menu stuff.
Easier project than I thought, highly recommended, I'll post some pics below so you get the basics of it.

I still need to get a decent wireless regular controller though, it's joystick only right now, will probably go with either a PS3 or 360 controller because there are already drivers working for those. But it's all kinds of awesome already. The RPi is a truly wonderful little device. I haven't tried to overclock it yet and some games aren't quite full speed so far but they're getting better with every update so maybe I don't have to overclock.

Painted! Honestly the most difficult part, I tried getting everything smooth as butter but I just couldn't manage, after a week of trial and error I just gave up and went with this result, I used a roller but probably should've used spray paint instead, the surface right now is smooth as... the skin of an orange. :/ Better luck next time maybe :p

Hehe yup I actually considered painting a green oval covering both speakers so it would look like an alien! (•-•) But my wife wasn't quite as excited about that idea as me lol

Even the Amiga emulator (UAE4ALL) works with it, it even put joystick-up on button 2 for those that want to jump with a button instead of pushing up on the stick.

Just looking at the total cost makes me think it actually cost me way too much to be honest, like $500 or something like that :S

But mostly because I had to buy a bunch of tools. I started out fresh on this, haven't really built anything meaningful at all before this.

Material-wise including the Raspberry Pi 2 it cost me about $300.
Wood $40 (lots of stuff left though)
RPi2 + case $40
TFT $10 (from a friend)
Speakers 0$ (old iphone dock)
Stick, buttons and IPAC $120 (2 player set)
Paint etc $30
Screws, drills and mounting plates $30
Stuff I'm probably forgetting $30

But it was still worth every penny because I had tons of fun doing it :)

Thanks! Personally I think they look great. But puritists will likely complain about the TFT being too sharp, but there is a smooth filter turned on as standard on RetroPie (which you can turn off if you like) so it's not too sharp in my opinion. I _think_ you can have scan line filters too but I don't know if the Pi can handle that without performance issues.

Is there a list anywhere of roms that FBA doesnt support??

I know it doesnt seem to support Tecmo and Irem based games which is rather odd, i would have thought after all these years FBA would have supports the majority of games that MAME does

How do i fix a cropping issue on NES games? The screen is cut off on the sides but is fine on the top and bottom.

I got the same issue as this

I have gone to /opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch and edited the retroarch config file by typing sudo nano retroarch.cfg and tried changing video_crop_overscan = true to video_crop_overscan = false but it does not fix the issue.

This is an example of what i am getting

EDIT:
Fixed it! I had to add the line video_crop_overscan = false in the /opt/retropie/configs/nes/retroarch.cfg text document manually.

I've been playing around with RetroPie on a Raspberry Pi 2 for awhile and thought it was quite amazing really, so I decided to finally take the plunge and build my first own cabinet, nothing fancy and not the typical Mame cabinet with all kinds of input options, just a single joystick and 4 action buttons and a few more for menu stuff.
Easier project than I thought, highly recommended, I'll post some pics below so you get the basics of it.

Tried my hand at a mini bartop, but made many woodworking mistakes. I'll have another go at it with a simpler design.

Try sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade and put the card in the Pi 2. Anything below image 2.5 wont work on the Pi 2 but i have read people updating their binaries and getting it to work.

I started from scratch myself when going from Pi 1 To 2 to avoid any issues.

Yup, that's what I was thinking of doing before I upgrade. I just hope I can get Parappa running at full speed (and, I feel like replaying FF8, so that too). It's so nice not having to drag out the PSOne and hook it up via a converter box that introduces a lot of fuzz to play these games.

Last two questions: does it fit in old B (not b+) cases? and, how do I check what version of Retro Pie and Emulation Station I have installed since I know I need 2.5+ to work on the new RPi2?

I would not recommend Sega CD zipped files as the files are like 500 to 700 meg and the Raspberry Pi takes a while to uncompress it to run. You can have files zipped and unzipped but i think MAME, FBA and Neogeo need to be zipped.

Save files and save states are located in the same location as the ROM folders similar to PC emulation. You can have save states like on PC via RetroArch or GBSP (for Gameboy Advance games). If you want them as a short cut on your controller add the following lines to your controller config under /opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/configs you can add some of this.

Gez, you seem to know your stuff, I've tried having the Xbox button on a Razer Sabertooth pull up the menu in RetroArch, but for some reason I need to push the hotkey button too to go to the menu.
I don't have the code infront of me right now but I think I have these lines at the end of retroarch.cfg in opt/retropie/configs/all

Do you know how I get the menu to appear without having to press the hotkey?

I went and looked at pictures, and I have a B, not B+, so my case won't work (wouldn't mind if the two USB ports were unusable, but they moved the power port for some reason!).

Anyway, I'm just going to wait for a little while anyway. I don't want to buy a new case, a RPi2, and micro SD card. Plus, I'd have to think of a way to use this old Pi (I already have another I use as a VPN filter for my network). Can I Airplay to it? Maybe that. Or maybe my own cloudbox/dropbox alternative. I dunno.

My Pi came and I started getting it set up, but a pretty silly limitation tripped me up - I don't have a keyboard! Just a mac laptop that I boot into windows via bootcamp. So no diving into config files for me tonight.

The base setup and boot into the RetroPi UI worked perfectly, though.

If you have an ethernet cable, you can connect the Pi to your router, SSH into it via the terminal (pi@10.0.1.?), and then do stuff. It'll be all done through text, but that can help you set things up until you get a USB keyboard (if you then later decide if you even need it)

He can just use Putty and connect via name instead of IP (should show up as RETROPIE on your network using the 2.6.0 image). It would be pretty much the same as doing it directly on the Pi. Its better doing it via remote terminal as you can copy and paste commands.

True. As a Mac user, I'm used to terminal and SSH unix stuff. I guess it depends what he's using.

But is there any way to reduce latency? I poked around Super Mario World for a few minutes and there was enough input delay to be quite noticeable, making the experience pretty hard to play. Even with game mode on on my TV.

I understand that this isn't strictly related to this box - just a die effect of retro LCD TV gaming. Just didn't know if there was anything else people often did to minimize.

Edit: I was able to minimize this myself by turning off all the rest of the dynamic stuff my TV was trying to do. I had turned off the motion interpolation garbage day 1, but some other things, like dynamic contrast, were still on. Turning all of them off reduced the SNES input lag really noticeably. (Oddly there was never any NES input lag).
