Rayman Legends |OT| "It's a bit like a porno" (Michel Ancel) WiiU/360/PS3/Vita/PC

I'm probably the only freak who did this, but did anyone else entertain themselves during the Rayman Origins loading screens by attempting to "hide" Rayman behind the various silhouetted objects as quickly as possible?

I was a little disappointed that the load screens in Legends are a little less conducive to that stupid habit.

nah I always tried to make it to the end.
theres a loading screen in the wii version that takes long enough to let it happen but i forget what stage it is

So back around the Wii U launch I pre-ordered this game on Newegg with one of those $12 off coupon code deals. I could've sworn that I had cancelled it a while ago alongside the Pro Controller when it became increasingly apparently that I was never going to get that Pro Controller, but I guess I was mistaken when I woke up this morning and saw that I had been charged for Rayman Legends.

So guess I'll be playing it in a few days!

I actually did this too, but I'm very happy the load times are so miniscule in Legends. Origins felt like it had to load 5 times as long as Legends for a level.

Looks like people are using glitches already - there are people on the leaderboards with nearly two billion lums, despite obviously not being very far in the game.

Wii U version? The load times in the challenge app are basically instant unless you move Rayman around.

So I went to Wal-Mart just after midnight hoping to pick this up. It wasn't out on the shelf so I found the electronics worker and asked him if he could bring it out.

He said no, and when I said it was supposed to be on sale he told me to 'be patient' and that it might be out by 2AM.

Jerk.

That's so unprofessional it's brilliant.

Damn. First Castlevania, now Rayman Legends, seems you can downsample this to Infinity and beyond and still keep 60. Really starting to wish I had one of those 144hz monitors. Only played the first level so far since I got it very late last night, and I've did that one to death on the Wii U app, but game looks beautiful. I like the change from flaming eyeballs to green boogery ghosties in the castle bit of the first level, looks great.

how does co-op work on the non-wiiu platforms? is it the same but with more players that can't control Murfy, or can anyone control him, or is one player relegated to tapping a button?

Just read the OP, but how can there be no Murfy in multiplayer? Half the levels wouldn't work.

Everyone can tap B, it makes for a very annoying experience. It's my only gripe with the game, the murphy levels are highly frustrating with multiple players who just want to have fun.

Thanks. There's nothing quite like a co-op game where you can screw everyone else over, for better or worse.

Yeah I thought so at first, but when it leads to just everyone dying and just having one of the players being the only one allowed to press his B button (and getting the blame if he screws up), then something is wrong :(

I've never pre-ordered a game on Steam before (don't hurt me) and I was wondering when/how the game unlocks on release date. Do they send me an email or does the game just magically start working at a pre-determined time. I double dipped on this game before it even came out. I'm picking up my Wii U version after work and I pre-ordered the PC version on Steam.

Ask yourself, what do you want from a game like this? Personally, I gravitate toward crisp controls, smart design, and rewarding challenges -- features frustratingly absent from Rayman's latest adventure.

hurray!
Finally someone that has actually played through origins before and is not just swayed by every other sites review scores,
this game deserves to be slated. No other development team would get away with this on neogaf.
You'd all be furious that there is only half a new game here, and a dumbed down one at that.
It's clearly unfinished, and has been made easy just for the review scores and casual players.
I've never felt so disappointed in a title, especially given how good origins was.
And don't give me origins levels to make up for the lack of new content, it just angers me even more.

If this was made by anyone else other than Michel Ancel, and it didn't look this pretty,
neogaf would be tearing this game apart.

This game is sooooooooooo boring in the normal stages. It's hard to explain, but mostly it is due to the absolute lack of any challenge or punishment from failure. The game is basically just running through lifeless stages with the highlights being the musical stages (that there should be way more of) and the endless runner/drop challenges.

Well there is one thing that was very positive surprise to me tho. The Murphy stages on PS3 aren't bad at all, they feel quite natural and are just as ''good'' as the other stages really.

Going to world 4 now. Man I hope it gets better.

''Mario Galaxy'' of Rayman games this certainly is not.

Going to world 4 now. Man I hope it gets better.

sadly world's 4 and 5 won't alleviate your pain.
world 4 looks amazing and has a good stealth idea but that's about it,
and they run with that idea throughout most of the world....

the reviews might have said it has lot's of brand new ideas in every level, just like mario galaxy.
but i must have played a different game from them.

If you haven't already,
go and buy origins now, it will solve every problem your having.
I still can't believe how much they messed legends up.
if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

...sarcasm?

...sarcasm?

not at all.

i've got nothing to say about the delay or anything to do with the wii u version.
i couldn't care less that it went multiplatform.
if that meant more money for the developers,
and ultimately more games like rayman origins then great.

my comments are all strictly about legends and it's contents.
Coming from a huge fan of origins, this game has been my biggest disappointment of this generation ( not counting last guardian delay )

I know that everyone here loves this game, but i found it to be a massive letdown.

I'm nowhere near completely finished, but I did just get through the last main levels. I have to say I'm disappointed. The complete lack of challenge and typical Ubisoft game design is sadly very prevalent in this one. There's always one way to go through a level, fail at a particular jump and it's back to the checkpoint. You're always going though the levels like the designer wants you to, not in a way you choose. You look like a badass doing it, but there's really nothing to it.

If I die in Mario and have to do the entire level again, I don't mind, because the games support quite a few playstyles and it's fun to discover them yourself. Rayman supports one playstyle, fail at doing so results in dying. If I had to play Rayman levels all over again it would be boring as hell thanks to this. I never actually go back to levels because of this. Once is enough.

I touched on this before, but now that I've seen most levels it still rings true: there's way too few platforming levels and way too many runner and Murfy ones. They add to the variety sure, and a problem Origins very much had (all levels felt the same). The added Origins levels should have been a neat bonus for newcomers, but they feel like the developers actually knew that they had too few levels and added these. It feels very cheap to say the least.

Still a good game, but "platforming genius"? Don't make me laugh.

So GAF my time for gaming is limited. I've never gotten around to playing my copy of Origins but just got Legends, do I play the Origins levels that come with Legends or skip them and play Origins instead?

Play Origins and skip the Origins levels on Legend. Unless you want more trophies/cheevos?

Not all levels are in Legends and the time attack is missing, so ideally, you'd play Origins. But the game mechanics are a bit better in Legends, so if you don't care for either, you can also very well just play Legends' versions of the levels.

I couldn't explain exactly my disappointment with Rayman Legends but this is one of the main reasons. As I wrote in the review thread, the vast majority of the levels have kind of a Simon Says feel to them like Prince of Persia 2008. The levels are designed with the player holding the run button at all times in mind. As a result it becomes a game of jumping when you see a hole and punching when you see an enemy without having to control the length of your jumps. The game is too choreographed.

rayman orgins was similar for some levels, similar but more challenging.
But origins also had a lot of variety in between these kind of stages.Legends almost throws out anything other than this playstyle.
Also, the stages where you think you need to run because there is fire behind you......you don't even have to run, just press forward.
The wall running move has almost been ignored as well, and to top it off the game has been dumbed down to suit the skill level of a typical ign reviewer.

There's nothing to go back and perfect, if your even slightly good there won't be gold cups to earn, or teensies to find.
it's all been done, without even trying on your first time through. It's changed so much that it's actually nothing like origins at all.

I'm currently awaiting the delivery of my PS3/Vita pre-orders, but these impressions really are taking the hype out of me at the moment. Kinda even wondering if I should just return the Vita version, and just go with the PS3 version.

Wow, my heart stopped beating a second when I read some of these GAF impressions. It's basically a dumber sequel with impressive production values. This game may have just gone down from must-have to rental if that is the case... and to think I may have bought and liked a Ubisoft game for the second or third time in my life.

Yeah, this GAF thread has caused me to hold off on buying Legends altogether. I'll probably end up waiting for the eventual price drop down to $20 now. This was going to be a Day 1-purchased based on my time with the demo and the good reviews.

Just got to the second 8-bit music stage where it turns to static at the moments you need to jump/attack. Almost feels like I'm playing with my eyes closed. Have to listen super close to the music to know when to jump. This is crazy.

Loving this game.

hmmm... troubling impressions

about the one-dimensional level design, I pretty much felt that was the case in Origins too, and it was disappointing. Dunno why I got my hopes up that Legends would be better in this regard. Got caught up in the hype, maybe.

Parish is one of the few reviewers whom I trust implicitly. I don't always agree with him, mind you, but his impressions are meaningful to me. So this is very unfortunate.

Legends is no where near as good as origins in this regard.
If you felt origins was one directional, then legends is going to seem like a piss take.

Remember those occasions of wall running up pieces of falling objects, jumping in-between them and dashing with skill to get to the tops of things?
Legends has it in one level, one level that re-uses assets from origins.
Everything else is just forward, jump, and press punch to either hit an enemy or a teensie cage, which have mostly been placed directly in your path

My initial impressions of "wow, this looks amazing, and it even controls slightly better" quickly turned into "i hope the next level get's harder".
This thought continued until the end of world 5, when the game seemingly ends before it get's good.
5 worlds of almost no challenge, and nothing to go back and get.
You need 300 lums to get a gold cup? ..... here, have 400 even though you made loads of mistakes.
But hey, at least it's got a 60 second time attack through most levels. everyone loves those.

If that's the definition of the best platformer in years then something has gone very wrong.

maybe I should just stick to the Challenges App, lol...

The level design in the Invaded levels is amazing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aehOI_qjChc

Don't go for just the 40" limit. Go for getting as high as you can in the rankings. The amount of depth there is in optimizing your runs in these levels is amazing. The difficulty you want is waiting here for you. :)

I don't think the optional difficulty in ~30-40 second time trial levels (pushing below the 40 second gold) really makes up for the overall difficulty level of the full game (in my opinion of course). It does help though, just not the same.

The first half of Origins is probably as easy as the main Legends' worlds tho. I'd say the invaded levels fill the role of the second half of Origins quite well, because:

1) It doesn't make asset and layout reuse as obvious because the levels are very short and have completely different enemies / objects.
2) High difficulty for those who want them instead of just levels you MUST complete to progress through the game.

The thing that feels a silly is that the final unlocks are nowhere near the level of effort that the final unlock in Origins did. I'm disappointed by that.

Legends is probably not as difficult to beat, but it's far less repetitive in level design/tropes than Origins. It is a common complaint.

Man, I'm LOVING this on Vita! Just got it about an hour ago. Beautiful, native resolution, 60fps. It looks and feels so good.

It's up on the eShop!!! Downloading now : )
edit: wow, still downloading, wtf. It's like 60%, but it's only a 6/7 gb file and my internet download/upload speed is like 20mb per second

Completed the game yesterday (Invaded Mission + World 7 and Origins are still unfinished).

The game gets harder and harder. The endboss was a pain in the ass and overall got the game harder in World 5. World 1-4 are easy as hell.

Beating the endboss in Legends feels much more satisfying than in Origins.
