Underworld Awakening brings a stunning new dimension to the epic battle between Vampires and Lycans as the first film in the franchise to shoot in 3D. Kate Beckinsale, star of the first two films, returns in her lead role as the vampire warrior Selene, who escapes imprisonment to find that humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species. 30 Minutes or Less -- From Ruben Fleischer, the director of Zombieland, comes the action comedy 30 Minutes or Less. In the movie, Nick (Jesse Eisenberg of The Social Network and Zombieland) is a small town pizza delivery guy whose mundane life collides with the big plans of two wannabe criminal masterminds (Danny McBride and Nick Swardson). The duo kidnap Nick and force him to rob a bank. With only a few hours to pull off the impossible task, Nick enlists the help of his ex-best friend, Chet (Aziz Ansari). As the clock ticks, the two must deal with the police, hired assassins, flamethrowers, and their own tumultuous relationship. The Amazing Spider-Man -- The Amazing Spider-Man is back on the big screen, shot in 3D for the first time, and will be swinging into your neighborhood on July 3, 2012. Starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, and Martin Sheen, as well as Sally Field, and directed by Marc Webb, The Amazing Spider-Man's new creative team will be taking a whole new direction in the unfolding saga of everyone's favorite web-slinger. Careful. If SDCC finds out a ticket was sold they'll deactivate it.

The shop where I work was donated a pass to auction off for Make A Wish. A cocksucker who runs a rival shop an hour away found out and reported it to SDCC, who cancelled ALL of our badges. After we explained it was for Make A Wish and refunded the guy's $100; they fixed our badges though.

Every year when this rolls around I wish I had gotten tickets, but then I think about how much I hated it the last time I was there (2009). This convention really has gotten too large for me to enjoy. This has nothing to do with "this was cooler before anyone knew about it" and more the fact that things are way too crowded to enjoy what is there. It does not help that a big reason I attend conventions is for costumes and this one just plain sucks for that. At least San Diego was always nice to visit.

I wish the talk of it moving to another venue would come true so I could give it another shot. I need more reasons to get out to visit my west coast friends.

This is why I am so pissed I'm going to have to miss Baltimore this year. I was really looking forward to it. Then my parents decided they wanted to come down to DC for a weekend in August... damnit.

Three things I should have made apparent:

1) I didn't make the comic, the talented Kate Beaton did
2) That is not a joke, people literally had those exact same signs there for god knows what reason
3) MLP is rad and comiccon is probably rad if you're into crowds that dense

My experience at NYCC involved
  • walking in
  • smelling the bacteria cloud
  • walking the labyrinth of shoulder to shoulder people
  • while shuffling along, having people in front of me turn and yell to their friends two feet away at as loud a volume as possible
  • see huge lines for any artist or vendor I wanted to check out
  • having a woman dressed in a team fortress two costume turn too quickly near a wall and destroying their medic pack, then turning around and thinking that I inexplicably tore it off of her and ruined her outfit as I stared at her with a blank look on my face
  • see an aisle lined with people with "hug me, I'm a nerd" signs
  • realizing this isn't for me
And like I said, that was the much smaller NYCC and not the real deal in San Diego.

SURELY there were a lot of good experiences to be had there, but just a little personally overwhelming.

Edit: Also I didn't mean "old" not in the sense of like... I'm old and wise and convention-goers are young and stupid, I meant "old" as in not possessing the physical stamina needed to brave the undulating convention beast.

You see a lot more creative and elaborate stuff at Dragon*Con than you do at SDCC. I know tons of people, including me and my wife, that spend all year getting ready for it. Also most people at SDCC do not know proper etiquette when dealing with people in costumes. Knocking on costumes to see what they are made of, running into you, not taking the time to ask for pictures, etc. Also it does not help that a lot of media sites only focus on the girls dressing as slutty as possible and ignore a lot of the well made stuff you might see there.
