That yummy high res art work...can't wait for release, held off on the 3DS version.

Also can't wait for the Kickstarter game to come out so no one asks "is this the kickstarter game" again
and also because it looks awesome but

3ds owners, is it worth the $20? I feel like it could be, but sometimes I feel like Wayforward can be inconsistent.

What exactly is new to this version? All I've seen is "HD character portraits". Everything else is the same? Do you at least view a bigger area than on the 3DS version?

It's well worth the $19.99. I'd pay $40 for it on a 3DS cart! It's better in every way than the first 2 games. This is a labor of love that they've been working on for years.

I just bought the 3DS version last night and I'm really enjoying it so far. The way it's set up with each island being a separate map reminds me a lot of the later DS Castlevanias.

HD boobs vs 3D boobs.

The boobs are still a 2D plane so HD wins easy

Wayforward is only inconsistent in licensed properties in my experience. Every original IP I've played of theirs has been great (MSF 1&2, Shantae The One Before This One™). This also got great reviews.

Good to hear in relative terms, the one I played on iPad was fun, but not as mechanically satisfying as MSF, and wandering around wasn't as satisfying as most metroidvanias.

It's really structured more like a Zelda (2) game (or Monster World IV) than a Metroid game. The worlds are more like separate dungeons and there is not as much checking every wall for secrets like in a Metroid.

" Wii U features include:

• HD character portraits by Mega Man developer IntiCreates!
• Off-TV play
• Classic Controller Pro and Wii U Pro Controller support
• Unlockable Pirate-Mode
• Multiple endings
• Epic original soundtrack by Jake “Virt” Kaufman"

Any known reason to play with gamepad over pro controller? Ergonomically I prefer the pro, but if a game uses it well like WWHD I'll use the gamepad instead

Ah, I can deal with that.

I think the first three bullets are the only Wii U exclusive features.

It actually turned out good that the Steam sales this holiday were disappointing for me. I can buy this without worrying about overdoing it this week.

would love some screencaptures of this on wii u.

the trailers make it seem like they are using some bilinear filtering which bums me out.

let me see all the pixel hips damn you!

Conflicted. I've heard good things about the series and I dig the art style and Virt is always good but I think the only wayforward game I've played before is the first Adventure Time game and it was not very good.

Read the reviews. Shantae has a lot more effort put into it than their average licensed games.

Urg I hate the eShop. I went to the "indies" and "eShop exclusives" sections looking for this. But it IS available (and should be a front page tile actually, I just wasn't looking there for it). Downloading now.

Like I said upthread, licensed wayforward game != original IP wayforward game. Their adventure time games seem to be especially bad (and their Shantae games seem to be especially good)

Really want to get this, as I've long been interested in the Shantae series, but haven't played any of them previous (also undecided between 3DS and Wii U).

I know Risky's Revenge is worth it, but is the first game in the series still worth playing?

The GBC game was always known more for its graphics than anything else. It's way harder than the rest and it's a GBC game. I don't recommend starting with it, because you'll probably die a bunch, quit, and never play the rest. I say start with Pirate's Curse and work your way backwards if you really like it. It's not like the story is that hard to figure out.

I've only played the original Shantae (GBC) on the 3DS Virtual Console, and it was one hell of a game. I'll get this one eventually.

hmmm not sure i like the huge contrast between hd art and the sprites
I don't mind it for the talking, but I'd prefer if the HUD remained pixels, personally. The gamepad screen is okay, but the HD hearts look really weird onscreen.

Should have gotten the 3DS version as the game looks kind of bad on the tv so I've ended up playing on the gamepad instead.

Oof, I don't get why some people are weird about playing (properly scaled) pixel art games on TV. Game looks crazy much better on my TV/monitor than on the gamepad sheerly due to the low quality screen on the pad plus the compression. Not sure the 3DS would be better or worse because it's not compressed but is an even worse screen. highly recommend playing on a proper 1080p display with no overscan, pixels should be perfect then.

I like the first one where Shantae is SO not impressed with the giant dragon monster

I'm using a 1080p tv with no overscan. The backgrounds just look awful since they're super pixelated. Shovel Knight and the rest of my pixel based games much look better than Shantae does.

I just beat it with 100%. I had beat the 3DS version, but not with 100%. Without spoiling the ending, I'm very satisfied with it and I think everything was nicely wrapped up and set up for the next game and I can't wait for 1/2 Genie Hero. I think the only disappointing thing is that there aren't a bunch of unlockable characters or costumes like they plan to do for 1/2 Genie Hero. I would have liked a playable Risky Boots at least.
