Back then, that shit blew my mind. I remember in Kowloon I was knocking at every door. There was no gameplay reason for it but the physicality of the world compelled me to explore it.
What is AU$2k against eternity?
Pretty insane to see the appetite among Shenmue fans for high cost tiers.
I'd definitely like to see some new tiers between 500 and 1000 to really get those mid-tier backers.
Oh lordy, if Shenmue III somehow incorporates Riichi Mahjong in the game then Ryo's quest for vengeance can take a hike. I'll just waste my days with Shenhua and become the local champion. The Mah Jong parlors were cool too, pity there was no playable Mah Jong in Shenmue II (oh well, Yakuza's got me covered in that regard!)
Lol, definitely an awful design but thankfully Suzuki's aware of it all. Still a ton of time to go until finalization so I'm not worried. I'm picturing something close to the original designs for all characters.I've just gotta say, that Ryo design that appears in the main banner of the OP is ghastly. He looks like something straight out of Glee lol. At least Shenhua looks much improved now.

So.. it sounds like we'll be getting a game the size of Dobuita?
Shenmue is an official limited edition art print drawn by artist John Sweeney based on the classic Shenmue™ game series. Sweeney made this print under direction of Cook & Becker and with official license from SEGA.
John Sweeney - lead concept artist for Sony's The Last of Us and Uncharted 4 - is a huge Shenmue fan. He will donate his proceeds of any copy of this artwork purchased before July 17 to the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter!
Sweeney says about his Shenmue artwork: "I'm so excited that Shenmue 3 is finally happening! I wanted to capture the moment just after Ryo's father Iwao is killed by Lan Di. In the game the scene stops with Ryo cradling Iwao and screaming "No!". I wanted to imagine a shot where Ryo is standing just outside the dojo where is father was just killed. It is cold and very early in the morning. Snow is falling. The morning light is still weak and only some of the wood interior is catching light from the outside. Ryo's pose already hints at him seeking revenge."
The normal size, unframed version of this print is printed on a glossy archival photo paper to emphasize the photographic nature of the image. The paper size of this version is 86 x 47.5 cm or 33.8 x 18.7" including a small white border. For all the Dibond mounted finishes we trim those white edges.
I doubt that the entire game will be the size of Dobuita. More like each of the three main locations of Shnmue 3 will have that scale.
that is sweet as hell.
That's fucking awesome. Even better that all the proceeds go towards the Kickstarter.
one 10,000k backer went. that'll get filled back in very quickly when people realise. the 'be an npc' tier went quick as hell last time. either way other backers seem to be filling that gap back up pretty quickly.Total has dropped a couple of times in the last hour, people must be backing out of the higher tiers.

I think the intention was a realistic take on Ryo rather than the gamey 'perfectly formed, leather jacket sticks to your body' design of the games, which is cool by me.It's very nice of him to do that but can't say I'm feeling the art itself, he didn't pick the right guy/body type as reference material for Ryo.

The legs are what I had the most issue with actually.

I just finished watching the ending to Shenmue again. Dat soundtrack! That last scene is just so perfect! ;_;
that foreshadowing for the end of shenmue II is amazing. it's kinda nuts it took a whole other game to reach that point, but it was an amazing ride.I just finished watching the ending to Shenmue again. Dat soundtrack! That last scene is just so perfect! ;_;
New updated graph, next one in 3/4 days.
Grab a dreamcast.
They are already complete. All that's left is for Sega to release them.
The rumour(?) is that the ports exist, is complete, but SEGA doesn't feel it's worth releasing/won't make them back the money it'll cost to print the disc/market it.
On top of whatever legal mumbo jumbos.
When you go back and look at Shenmue 2 it is actually quite scary how massive the game really is.

It's all good, still over 24k for the day so far! We are hitting the next tier today for sure!
Both endings are amazing, but I was talking about the original Shenmue in my post LOL. That moment the music peaks after the narrator and then seeing Shenhua = PERFECTION!
Wait, what? Where's this rumor come from? I was heavily considering just emulating 1 and 2 but if there actually is a chance a Remaster will happen I'll just wait for that.

actually i was talking about the original.
the ending to both games mirror each other actually. that's super smart storytelling.
"The reason for the delay, evidently, has been uncertainty over the series' future and whether Shenmue III would ever happen (short answer: no). "
a poster here. but it was never elaborated on or corroborated by anybody else, so i'm starting to think it might not be accurate. Here's a short IGN article from way back. The original report came from GamerZines (offline, archive here), who spoke to "an anonymous industry source".
I don't know the source of the "licensing issues" that get brought up here as a reason why it wasn't released in the end.

Afaik, it's mostly due to legal/copyright reasons.
back in '12 you may remember that Sega went into a port spree. JSR, Nights...they thought it was a great idea, with very low risk and nice proft potential since, well, they don't want to fund traditional AAA anymore. Multiple ports were in development, among them was the canceled Skies of Arcadia port.
Shenmue case was special since not many people know this, but apparently the engine for both games uses licensed technology. It's not Bink Video or Sofdec codecs, apparently it's related to the very own engine.
Well, the thing is, according to what I've been told, the owner of those technologies folded years ago, and it's not clear who owns the copyright now.
Someone shown Sega a working Shenmue prototype for Xbox 360...but after disappointing sales by JSR and Nights, they didn't care enough to bother with the legal hassle. So it never went through the prototype stage, and the Skies of Arcadia port was canceled.
And I guess my dream of getting Model 3/later arcade games ports went to shit as well ;(

In their day, the Shenmue games were amongst the most ambitious video games ever made, featuring huge, living cities - Sega's Yakuza series is often considered their spiritual successor. If an HD remake does indeed exist, would Shenmue stand the test of time?

The source of the licensing issues was a post here on GAF a while back: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=101432168#post101432168
I'm pretty sure Star Citizen has reached a very high number of backers as well (in the high 6 figures). There is an element of milking whales, but the overall number are impressive.

It says "his proceeds", some percentage might go to Sega or Cook & Becker.
I love that some of the proceeds will go to the campaign, but I'm sorry, the more I look at that the less impressive it is from a conceptual standpoint. It's just really flat and too gritty for a Shenmue print.
4.4 still coming up. so close i can taste it.
it's crazy how since friday we're up almost .6 million.
