ok, I will try that in the battle I'm stuck on now. The third boss is a total bitch. I can dodge her attacks fine, but she takes so little damage from normal attacks that the fight drags on for way too long. It's possible to stun her for a throw, but I haven't found a sure fire way to do so. Most of the time I get her to 25% of her health, but then her attacks get even more frequent and she finishes me off. Plenty of tries wasted on this fight.
The third boss is there to teach you patience.

Exactly. Be calm and don't rush in, particularly when her health is low. When you know she's about to pull off one of her devastating finishers, stay well clear and dodge. You really have to chip away at her health for most of the fight.

And yes, that thing I said earlier should help you a bit in this fight.

Yes, she's finally down. Thanks for that hint, made the fight go significantly faster. I still got killed a few times when she goes below 20% health. Then she can unleash this über combo that immediately kills you, but then I switched to the d pad evades. Really tough boss, glad it's done.

What the others have said about patience is true, but this battle also kinda sets the pacing for future boss battles. Though the combat will be diverse and there will be specific tactics for each fight, you can get a good feel as to what kind of caution you'll need to exercise instead of carrying the inertia of rushing in and destroying everything from all the normal fights.
The Death Metal and Dr. Peace fights
so far has just kinda been block-kill-block-kill affairs, and the action you get with her is a notable and I'm thinking, deliberate change in the way you engage the boss assassins.

You probably won't appreciate this until you get to the other fights, obviously, but it's an eye opener later on if you look back on it. I thought it was a nice design cue myself.

After beating Destroyman (what an intro and conclusion :lol ) I know exactly what you mean. Another boss where pattern recognition and patience is key. Only took me a couple of tries to take him down.

Loving this game more and more as I keep playing. I don't mind the side jobs all that much, they're just bite sized diversions. After every kill you get a new minigame, so it never becomes a grind.

I haven't been able to beat one of those free form one hit kill missions though. When I run away to recharge they get a hit in.

What should I spend my balls on? The first thing I bought was the dash, which comes in handy for city exploration alone.

Memory of Three shows enemies on your radar. Useful.

Then there's Memory of Demon and Memory of White. The first gives you a jumping slash by shaking the nunchuck, which will always knock down enemies. The second gives you a jumping attack on the downed enemy you're locked onto (be at a certain range away from the enemy and the A button should show up to do the move). In other words, these two skills combined are insanely useful at killing some of the harder enemies later in the game. Knock one down with the Demon skill, and then insta-kill him the White skill.

Memory of Tattoo gives you a money bonus at the end of a level, depending on how many enemies you've killed without getting hit. Can help to pitch in some extra cash for the next level.

The other skills aren't all that useful, IMO.

Oh, and don't forget to shake the Wiimote during the slowdown when you do a finishing blow. It'll do extra damage and take out more enemies in the vicinity as well.

PS: Got the European version?

Sorry for the dp but I just finished the game and had to give some final impressions. I thought that the game was phenomenal really. The game did a terrific job at creating some memorable characters and bossfights.
Letz Shake
was the high point of the game for me. As a player you were conditioned into this pattern and when 'it' happened your jaw could do nothing but drop.
The best part of that moment is that Shake is introduced as a formidable opponent and while he does his countdown you're already thinking about how you're gonna fight this guy. Surprising the audience like that is something more games should do. It reminded me of the one 1up yours episode where Shawn Elliott talks about games needing an equivalent of Stravinsky. I think this 'fight' in NMH shows that some devs try something in that regard

The other later bosses where tons of fun too, with Bad girl as my favorite. I didn't realize at first that you could bat the dolls back at her, after which the battle became some fucked up ganon fight tribute.

It's funny that I'm completely in love with a game that has so many faults. The overworld stuff could be a lot more varied and the levels before the bosses are way too easy and don't prepare you for the real fights at the end.

I'm so glad this game got a sequel because now they have a chance to do some things better or different.

sorry for the bump but i didn't feel like starting a new thread, just wanted to say I saw this bundle in gamestop this morning, red steel and no more heroes 29.99, so I picked it up haven't played red steel before, and I traded in No More Heroes a while ago. But I have to say, Red Steel isn't as bad as everyone made it out to be. Thought you guys may be interested. They have it up on the internets as well.http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=74170&affid=3000&WT.mc_id=032409nl

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Paid full price for both. One turned out to be one of my favorite games ever, the other a pleasurable launch title experience. $30 for both doesn't really require much thought... or cash.

Ok, FINALLY finished this game from my never ending enormous backlog. Yes, I've had it since day 1 and now only finishing more than a year later. Sacrilegious, I know... Anyways, it was so satisfying. I think Bad Girl is my fave psychopath wielding a bat ever. Wasn't expecting that. Was a bit disappointed with the fight with Jean. Great game. on to waiting for number 2.

Better late than never. Now pick up MadWorld. It's No More Heroes' black-and-white cousin. :)

Any news on NMH2?
I'm very surprised we didn't get a trailer from GDC. Suda didn't even mention it during his panel. Soo... I don't think we'll see anything until E3, to be honest.

You did
fight the REAL final boss right?

That more than makes up for the fight with Jeane.

Honestly I do not think there is a bad song in the entire game. Killer7 and NMH are the only video game soundtracks I've actively sought out.

And of course "No More No More Heroes" and "The Virgin Child Makes Her Wish Without Feeling Anything"

The first is responsible for a sizeable part of the ending's awesomeness and when listenning back to the last one I can't imagine Dr Peace is actually singing it in the game before you fight him.

I just beat the game. the credits are literally still rolling (and the music is awesome).

but seriously. that ending? what the fuck. (yes I did
the "true" ending
)

[edit] LoL @
the cutscene after the credits. "I know! Too bad there won't be a sequel!" and "TO BE CONTINUED"

it was cool. it was just kind of a mindfuck. I suppose I should expect no different from Suda, huh?

so does anyone know what
Jeane said during the fast-forward section? all I caught was Travis is her half-brother, she was pissed at our mother and so she killed our mom and my dad.
or something.

I was a little disappointed at the true ending at first, but when the camera zooms out after the credits it totally makes up for it and then some.

So, on my second playthrough, I noticed
I still have my upgraded sword and increased strength and vitality. Can I keep upgrading shit or are there no more health upgrades?

I think you're maxed out. You can get new trading cards though.

aw. but Bitter will suck without moar upgrades!

and I never cared a whole lot about the trading cards. I wish they were fully designed cards we could look at in the game and not just palette swaps of the same luchador mask.

yeah, you can keep upgrading your vitality and stuff at Ryu's. but i can't believe you didn't like the Jeane battle.
i know it totally set you up for Darkstar and his horse/dragon whip thing, but thinking back, i can't think of it being any other way. the final boss fight, despite the humor the game and even the opening to the battle itself was framed in, it was a genuinely intimate and somber moment. when Travis killed Jeane, his half-sister who he had unwittingly dated, it was a moment that was designed for the player to actually feel BAD for the character they're killing. through and through, Jeane was Travis's world before his tragedy. he suffered greatly from witnessing her brutally murder his parents, to the point completely wiping it from memory. even after his self destructive behavior, he still pined for Jeane. if you don't believe me, the prevalent porno that Travis gets calls about is "How to Please a Woman in Bed 101." who does Travis have to "please"? even Sylvia is nothing more than a trade in for Jeane. Hell, he even named his cat Jeane. Travis's whole world revolved around her, and the whole buildup to meeting her can very much be likened to a romantic tragedy,
and that i think is what's going to be prevalent in Desperate Struggle. hell the title even references it, the desperate struggle of reality, which Travis now has to face.

wait... oh shit, i'm reading too much into things again, aren't i :lol
not really. works of literature deserve decoding.

edit: looks like i was thinking you were someone else for some reason and you didn't show any opinion of the Jeane fight. well, read it anyway, it's good learning.

wow o.o

somehow I missed that
they dated each other.
mind you, it's been over a year since I played the first two missions of this game. I rented it when it launched, played the first few hours, then turned it back in, determined to buy the game because I liked it so much.

then a year passed. -_- I finally bought it about a month ago but I barely remember (or apparently don't remember at all?) the beginning. It was nice watching the intro cinematic again when the second playthrough started.

anyway, I like your analysis; it was interesting. for the record, I liked the fight. I was "what the fuck"ing over how crazy the plot twists got. I enjoyed it, though, don't get me wrong. =)

it basically says they dated right in the manual "Jeane: the object of Travis's love. They haven't met since the day they parted ways..." there's a picture on the desk with the phone. seriously, people should read their manuals more often. it was a damned necessity for games back in the day, and these days it's rarer, but you still get your oddball like Rune Factory Frontier. at least a skim is necessary. you just end up learning so much.

also, if you want some better and deeper analysis of the game as a whole, check out mine and TIE's posts in the thread. the Jean bit fits nicely into my Freudian theory. it's really cool that this game is more than just a tongue in cheek play on video game culture. there's just so many more layers of encoding in this, the true gaming embodiment of a deep narrative. Mass Effect can eat it's heart out.

I'm afraid I didn't read the manual because:

1) when I first played it, I rented it and played it at a party, so looking through the manual would have been kind of a momentum killer; and
2) upon buying it, I figured, "I already know how to play this and it's been so long I can't wait to dive back in!"

I'll check out your posts in the thread though.

:(

The trick is once you get the darkslide dodge to trigger, use just one or two normal strikes to make him stagger, then take advantage of the slo-mo to fully charge and deliver a low strike. If you don't use the charged strikes it just takes forever and you'll probably slip up too much before you can sink enough damage into him.

There's also some sort of bug with the dodge in this fight, I forget exactly how it works or what you need to do to clear it.

Christine

Okay, now I remember. What happens is if you die during the fight and select 'back to the dog races', the analog stick double-tap won't trigger the darkslide anymore (D-pad still works, but is harder to do). You've got to load your save, go back out into Santa Destroy and play any assassination mission or free fight. I think you may have to beat it and get the clear screen, so I recommend signing up for the Pizza Butt I gig. After you've done that, go back to your apartment, go to the bathroom and ask to see the true ending again and everything will work as it should.

EDIT: gah, I remembered wrong.

Deathborn 668 said:
There is a glitch with this battle. If you just booted up your Wii and chose View Real Ending when you started up the game, you can't Dark Step Henry using the control stick. To do so you'll need to Dark Step with the D-Pad (instead of a left/right Emergency Evade you will pull off a Dark Step). There're only specific points in the combo where you can Dark Step him, and it often doesn't work because the window of opportunity is very small. To earn the control stick Dark Step back, go do any Assassination Gig and pull off at least one Dark Step during that fight. When you return to Henry you'll be able to Dark Step normally again. Obviously, turning off your Wii again will force you to go through these steps again to regain the control stick Dark Step.
